Protein powder. It's convenient, it's affordable, and it's delicious.
There are so many different kinds to choose from.
Clean whey protein powder, casein,
pea, brown rice, hemp protein powder.
There's all these amazing powders out there.
But which helps you lose weight?
Personalized buyer's guide to find out which protein is right for you.
Plus, hair treatments for thinning hair.
I'm desperate for a cure right now.
How can we tell which ones work and which ones are a scam?
Coming up next.
You're going
to save some lives today.
I love you, Decox.
A full-blown smoothie and shake drink.
In the gym, in the car, at work, wherever you go,
you see people drinking protein shakes.
And it all starts with this, protein powder.
Here's the deal.
There are so many different kinds to choose from
that many of you find picking a protein powder,
well, pretty darn confusing.
And to help power through all the protein powder information
is my good friend and protein guru himself, Chris Powell.
Woo-hoo!
Good to see you, buddy.
With bigger guns every year.
Bigger and bigger and bigger.
It's as big as they get.
So what's behind this protein power boom?
Oh, gosh, there's a lot of reasons why,
but there's three main components here.
It's convenient, it's affordable, and it is delicious.
I mean, I can, first of all, like, I can carry it with me
anywhere I want to go.
It's non-perishable.
Whenever I want, simply throw in the powder,
throw in the water, shake it up, 30 seconds, it's down.
On top of that, it's affordable.
It is cheaper than the cheapest source of fast food protein,
and it's 10 times faster.
And then on top of all that, it's delicious.
And so if you look at a lot of different concoctions nowadays,
I mean, you remember protein shakes back in the day.
Yeah, like cardboard, mud, chalk.
It was terrible, but now with these new flavor profiles and these
textures, it's getting closer and closer to actual milkshakes.
All right, so to help navigate all the confusion,
Chris is going to give you all a personalized buyer's guide to find out
which protein is right for you.
And Renata is going to start us off because she's really confused.
So what are you looking for when it comes to protein powder?
Okay, so I'm looking for great taste, of course, okay?
But you know what?
What I really need my protein powder to do for me
is help me lose weight.
Because otherwise, why am I drinking a protein shake, okay?
I need to be able to lose weight on this protein shake.
Chris, answer the woman's question.
For losing weight, which is the right protein powder?
So the protein powder that I love for weight loss
is casein protein, which I think, personally,
it doesn't get enough love these days
because casein protein, of all the protein powders,
it's very slow digesting.
So because of that,
Because of that, it's going to make you feel fuller longer.
And that helps curb cravings.
And who doesn't want that when you're actually following a diet?
We want to curb that hunger, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Since this is my only meal, it needs to make me feel full.
Absolutely.
Have you tried this, baby?
And while you guys are drinking that, check this out.
A recent study actually found that individuals
who were drinking casein protein versus other
protein powders, they lost more body fat
and they gained more muscle during a 12-week study.
So this is some great stuff.
What do you think of that?
What is this?
Who made this?
What is this?
I made this myself.
This is so good.
Oh, you put your foot in it like that?
Yeah, my foot in it.
A little vanilla, a little banana.
But the thing is, they don't really have a taste,
right, so you can cover it up, camouflage
it any way you wish.
You can blend it with anything, with berries,
with peanut butter, with all kinds of really
cool stuff.
You can make the most delicious concoctions,
and as I was saying, they're starting to taste
more like legitimate milkshakes, right?
That's exactly what this tastes like, I'm not lying, studio audience.
Oh my goodness.
Before you make a final decision, I want you
to pay attention to two other kinds, right?
We've got Kimberly over here.
Camille,
you're targeting something very different with your protein powder.
I am, yes.
So, you know, strong is the new sexy.
Strong is the new skinny.
Am I right?
I can appreciate that, absolutely.
And as a woman who works out, Pilates, I'm in the gym,
I want something to help me maintain my lean muscle mass
while still having a feminine figure.
So, what do you got?
Okay, what do you got?
When it comes to training,
the number one protein that I prefer absolutely
After a training session is, of course, going to be whey protein.
It's going to go into the system really quickly
so your body can work its magic and grow that big, beautiful muscle.
I would definitely do this.
This is delicious.
It's lighter, but I don't know if it's how we made it.
I mean, did the protein powders themselves have
that much of a taste difference?
There are slight differences in all the different protein powders.
And if you're a connoisseur like me, you'll start to pick up on them.
But at the same time, when it comes to the flavor profiles...
Boy, they can all be pretty darn delicious.
So I want you to look at this little demonstration we're going to do.
Chris, come over here.
So when you look at muscle building, it's a whole different ballgame.
So think about building up your muscles like building up your house.
The muscle is basically the house of the body.
Now,
let's say you want to put an addition on this beautiful house you have.
You're out there doing your Pilates or whatever exercise you're doing.
You want to get a little bit of lean muscle added on, right?
Not a big bulky person, but a little lean.
So to do that, you've got to actually tear down the house to make room,
which is what you do when you exercise.
That little soreness you get,
That's because you are tearing down the muscle.
Now, when you tear it down, if you're trying to build it bigger,
you need building supplies.
And the addition of those supplies is the protein.
So if you don't have enough protein in your body, all you do is put
the old roof back on and you're not making much progress.
But if you have enough protein, when you break down the muscles,
take the roof off the house, so to speak, you put on another floor.
Now you've got a little buildup of those muscles.
You've got guns like Chris, if you want them.
If you want them.
All right.
Hope that's helpful.
Yes.
Thank you.
Finally, whey protein, casein, they come from dairy.
So if you need an alternative to dairy,
which a lot of you do because you've got an intolerance to them,
my favorite, pea protein.
How many of you have heard of pea protein?
Pea protein.
Not many.
A couple people.
A little spattery over here.
I actually think this is one of the unsung
heroes of the protein movement.
So what are the advantages of pea protein,
and what do you lose by trying it?
Well, you really don't lose much at all because they've actually found
that the profile for all the branched chain amino acids
that you get in protein is very similar to both casein and whey.
So you get a lot of those same benefits.
But, of course, like you were saying, if you're lactose intolerant
or you're really not interested in eating animal-based sources
of protein, it's such a beautiful alternative.
What does Chris Powell do himself?
What do you recommend for him?
How do we figure out which one of these to go with?
Well, it's really easy for me.
I'm looking for simplicity.
Less is more when it comes to this stuff.
So I'm only looking for about five or six ingredients.
If you see a paragraph of a bunch of stuff in there
that you can't pronounce, put it down.
You don't need it.
Just get a good, clean whey protein powder,
casein, pea, brown rice, hemp protein powders.
There's all these amazing powders out there,
and you'll be good to go.
So let me give you a little bit of advice.
To help navigate the protein powder,
and by the way, thank you for helping us put it together.
Of course.
I want you to follow Chris's wisdom
on all the things health and fitness related
by downloading his app, Transform with Chris and Heidi.
And I'm going to put a buyer's guide on DrRodgers.com
because this is pretty confusing for a lot of folks.
Use it if you're buying protein powder.
When you go shopping, share it with your friends.
And when it comes to protein powder,
You mentioned at the very outset, I think a lot
of folks are getting the protein they need.
You only need 50 grams, as long as you're not working out.
And if you are working out, you need a little more,
then you can start experimenting with some of these.
But ideally, you do them both together, not one by itself.
Buying protein powder can be expensive.
So as we go to break, here's an easy-to-follow recipe
you can make protein powder with right at home.
Your own protein powder.
We'll be right back.
He says the
antidepressant
he was
taking
led him
to murder
his own son.
I was shocked. It didn't make any sense.
Do you believe your father when he says it's
the pills that made him kill your brother.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We are back with your
personalized buyer's guide
to the new smoothie boosters you need to know about right now.
And to help us out smooth-talking our way through these boosters
is comedian Chuck Nice.
Oh, yeah.
It's all about the smooth.
No rough stuff here.
That's not sexy.
Just smooth baby
I love this.
All right, Chuck.
Give him a hand.
That is unbelievable.
So Chuck is going to introduce us to our three smoothie lovers.
Oh yeah. Maria knows how to get her smooth on.
The problem is it doesn't stay on. She's looking
for a way to stay full until lunch. Don't worry, baby.
We got you all day. And then there's Tiffany.
Tiffany has a cat named Sprinkles.
She loves to cuddle up with him as they marathon
Bette Midler movies on Netflix.
I just made that up.
Why? Because it's smooth.
To whom? I don't know.
But she needs an immunity boost.
So Netflix and chill, but not with the cat.
That would be weird.
And then there's Jenny.
Yeah, no need.
Jenny's totally cool.
Okay, honestly, I can't remember what she wants in a smoothie.
Three boosts.
Oh, yeah.
Maybe I should get a sip of that.
We're here. She wants a smoothie boost.
Do you like Chuck?
I do like chocolate.
Very nice and smooth, wasn't it?
So smooth.
So well-named.
All right, we've got a smoothie boost for satiety.
So why are you unsatisfied with your current solution?
Well, because I'm always on the run, rushing in the morning.
I grab a smoothie for breakfast, but then by 10 o'clock, I'm starving.
You want Chuck to give you the answer, the solution?
I do.
All right, we poured through Pinterest.
We looked for social media solutions,
and we found the next greatest smoothie to keep you full.
Chuck, take it away while Maria tastes.
Oh yeah, they're smooth, they're creamy, they're good for your heart.
The more you eat, the more you fear first dates.
Thanks.
Your smoothie boost for satiety is white beans.
Whoa, white beans.
This is why you might fear your first date,
because the interesting thing about beans,
what gives them their taste is primarily the salt in there.
Think about that. If you don't have much
salt, they don't have much taste.
You can sneak them in there, a little creamy, gives you that
smooth feeling that you want to have.
What do you think of the taste? It's really, really good,
actually. It was like nutty, creamy.
I'm trying to guess if there was banana in it. What's in
there? Banana? Mostly just beans. White beans?
Just beans, lots of them. I'll definitely come
I'll report that next time.
Very smooth, isn't it?
It is very smooth.
All right, next up, Tiffany wants a smoothie boost for immunity.
So if you don't mind, Tiffany, give it a taste.
I want to get your honest opinion
while Chuck shows us why this new smoothie boost
might actually be great for immunity.
In the words of Janet Jackson, give me a beat.
Oh, yeah, that's Miss Jackson if you're nasty.
And that beat is spelled with two E's.
Your smoothie boost is beat.
Very smooth if you're an immunologist.
You almost choked. What happened?
I didn't think this was beets.
Surprising, isn't it?
Yeah.
Describe it for everybody.
So basically, it has like a rich taste to it.
It has, it's a little bit sweet, not too sweet, though.
But a little earthy, maybe.
Beats me.
Oh, God.
So I had to go there.
I had to go there.
Oh, my goodness.
It's terrible.
No, but it's nice.
It's a little bit different than what I'm used to.
I usually go for something sweeter,
but I think if you're not really into the sweetness
as much, it's perfect.
It has a balance.
Well, I love it.
First, it's got the great color.
I can't beat that.
But the immunity parts-
It's one of my favorite colors.
Isn't it great?
But it's got minerals and vitamins.
It's got something called betaine,
which fights inflammation, which is why I think it's a
pretty good solution.
Okay.
And plus, Chuck liked it, too.
All right, next up we got Jenny and Emma.
She wants a smoothie boost for memory.
Chuck had trouble remembering.
So what are you having trouble remembering these days?
Everything. I left my laundry in the laundromat overnight.
I totally forgot about that. My kids were so mad at me.
I don't know if we have a solution for that,
but we have another solution.
Take a look at what Chuck describes
as our secret smoothie boost for memory.
Yeah. She normally travels with sage and thyme.
That's one aromatic threesome, baby.
Very fragrant.
We're talking rosemary, baby.
Well, not rosemary's baby.
Maybe.
That would be a little weird.
The spice, girl.
Well, not the spice girl.
Okay, you know what I'm talking about.
He's out.
How does the rosemary blend with fruit?
Well, I'm very surprised that you can
actually drink rosemary in a smoothie
because I always think that that's for, like, chicken.
But it tastes really good.
It doesn't overpower the fruit taste, so I guess that's good.
It smells good.
We need to be using more of these spices.
They fill the room.
They fill your nose.
But the best part about rosemary in one small study.
They actually showed that it helped with prospective memory.
That's like memory like, you know,
I got to pick up my kids at 2 o'clock
or I got to pack something for lunch.
It may not help for forgetting your laundry overnight,
but it's a separate, we'll make a different smoothie for that.
Well, this is great.
So if I can do this and it'll help me remember, I'm game.
It's a gift from the show.
And my other two guests are taking Chuck home.
It's beautiful.
Smoothie-loving Chuck, you did a great job.
Thank you very much.
All the smoothie lovers, thanks for being here.
We're going to put the recipes and the entire buyer's guide
on DrOz.com so you can get
be smooth about life.
Be right back.
Supercarbs to supercharge your weight loss.
Let's end the war on bread.
Plus, Terry Crews on being sexually harassed
and his secret porn addiction.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
You know, nothing makes me angrier than
when someone preys on the most vulnerable just to make a quick buck.
And those peddling, phony hair growth treatments are the worst.
And there are more than a few.
In fact, the American Hair Loss Association warns that 99%
of all products being marketed in the hair loss industry are bogus.
Yes, 99%.
99%.
I mean, that's crazy.
So how can we tell which ones actually work
and which ones are actually a scam?
We sent core team member Tia Brown to investigate.
Like an estimated 30 million American women,
Christy's hair is thinning.
And wherever Christy goes online,
she's flooded with ads for products to help with hair loss.
Shampoos, serums, shots, pills.
But it's really hard to navigate the hair loss treatment industry.
There's so many different products out there,
I just don't know what to go with.
I know, that's really tough.
Especially if you're going to spend your hard-earned cash.
Exactly.
You want results.
I do. I'm desperate for a cure right now.
And it's not just online.
Supposed hair loss treatments are everywhere.
So Christy and I decided to go undercover.
We were rigged with hidden cameras,
then headed to three salons to find out
which hair growth treatments are legit,
And which are scams.
Online, the first salon advertised a hair thinning treatment
using a popular, FDA-approved wrinkle injection.
But once we got there, the story was not quite clear.
Yeah, for her hair, thinning it out.
So that's what she wants to do.
Can you help?
OK, so I'm going to tell you what I'm going to do.
We showed respected dermatologist Dr. Dindi Engelman our footage
and asked her to weigh in.
So this is completely preposterous.
There are studies ongoing about injections
in the scalp in the dermatologic space to
help with hair growth, but this is nothing more than
a hair conditioner and honestly
it's not going to incite new hair growth.
On to the next salon.
This one advertised a scalp treatment to help with hair loss.
Christy printed out the info.
Now I want to know what you offer for the thinning hair.
So a treatment for greasy hair
or seborrheic dermatitis is going
to have absolutely nothing
to do with hair growth.
Again, completely misleading and false advertising.
The last salon we visited has been helping women
with thinning hair for 25 years.
So what brings you in today?
I saw online that you have treatments for thinning hair.
And you've helped a lot of people, so that's why I'm here.
Yes, this is so.
What we want to do is we want to dress your thinning hair back here,
your thinning hair up here, and your thinning hair here.
My personal opinion is some over the top, okay?
How do you feel?
Very excited.
You're excited?
I don't hear it.
I am excited.
Tia Brown is here with Christy, who looks unbelievable.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Amazing.
Different energy.
You carry yourself differently, like a different person.
I feel like a different person.
I feel amazing.
That last person helped.
Definitely helped.
I haven't felt this good since high school.
Oh, my goodness.
Nice.
Nice.
Tia, what surprised you most about what you uncovered?
Oh my gosh, this was such an interesting study.
And Christy was a great sport.
She was really pushing it, making sure
that she asked the hard questions.
But I was surprised because, you know,
it was really kind of like a bait and switch.
The ad said something very clear.
We will help with hair thinning.
You got there, and what did they say?
We can't do it.
Continuously, over and over again.
So I was really shocked by that.
So, what did you come away with after
this whole venture, all this work?
What do you think about the world of the hair growth industry?
Well, there are a few things, but I think
the biggest thing that people should know
is that there are two different labels that you can have from the FDA.
One is FDA cleared, and that means that the product is safe to use.
It means that it won't harm you.
But the other one is FDA approved.
That's the only way you know it works.
Christy, I am so impressed.
Thank you.
By her transformation.
I am too.
And I love the extensions.
But you remember that great dermatologist
who's looking at the videos, Dr. Dendy?
Yes.
This is actually her specialty.
Okay.
So if you're up for it, she's agreed to take care of you.
Really?
Take you into her practice.
She's legitimate.
She knows what's FDA approved and FDA cleared.
So we're going to send you to her for a free consultation.
Wow.
I'm so excited.
That is awesome.
I'm so excited.
Thank you so much.
Up next, Coley Nikki is going to share some
of these treatments that really do work with
us, and they're all customized to your needs.
Stick around.
Coming up, we're investigating hair growth treatments
so you can avoid the scams.
And find what works.
Couple numbers, it is estimated that 50% of women
experience hair loss by 50, and every single one of them
is desperate for an affordable solution that actually works.
The problem is, there's a lot of scams out there,
so we invited our favorite hair expert, Curly Nikki here,
who has worked closely with my medical unit
to come up with hair growth treatments
that could work for you.
With so much money being made out there,
we just saw the scams that are heading out,
and how do you find out what's worth your money?
This is a...
Billion-dollar industry.
So if you don't have the right information,
it's treacherous, super treacherous.
My first recommendation would be to avoid descriptive
words like amazing or miraculous scientific breakthroughs.
That's just words that companies use
to pull emotions out of potential consumers.
Total red flags.
Avoid that at all costs.
Also, I'm sure you guys have seen like
those 30-day money-back guarantees, right?
You feel secure, right?
You feel like you got an insurance policy.
No, you need at least 90 days to see any results from any of this stuff
because of the way our hair grows out of our scalp.
90 days, so that would make more sense.
I never thought of that.
It makes sense.
Right off the bat, they're telling you they're going to trick you.
Exactly, exactly.
And then finally, Dr. Oz, don't click those links on social media
that take you to the fake news sites with, like,
the glowing reports about the latest scientific breakthrough, right,
for the hair loss treatments.
They're fake.
There was recently a blogger
who had her picture taken from her website.
Posted on one of those fake news sites with a testimonial about
a product that she had never even heard of or tried.
So you have to be very careful.
It's a ton of us getting this right now, and it's infuriating.
So come on over.
Let's start with new treatments that actually do work.
These ones are making headlines from...
New York Times, they're on Bloomberg News, they're on Vanity Fair,
all over the place I'm reading about this.
They are customizable serum and shampoo regimens.
Yes, yes.
So there's a lot of them, but the most popular one is from Denmark,
and it just hit the States,
and people are clamoring to get their hands on them.
It contains an ingredient blend of proprietary ingredients from plants,
plant extracts and fatty acids,
and actually an ingredient derived from cow's milk.
And then they customize it for your particular hair care needs.
Studies. There have been some studies
that the company claims they've conducted that are placebo-controlled
and double-blind, but they haven't published them yet.
They're hoping to publish in a peer-reviewed journal next year.
So there's a lot of excitement,
but no research that I can point you to.
All right.
They don't count until they're published, these papers, by the way.
Exactly.
Let me invite Lauren out here.
Lauren.
Has actually done the work.
I have a pilot.
So there's a phone consultation.
I understand you have to do what you did.
Yes, I did.
Then they said, based on what you answered,
they put together a package that made sense for you.
Yeah, absolutely.
So it was first a quick online consultation,
which was super simple.
And then same day, I scheduled the phone consult,
where it was via video.
So they took a look all around my scalp.
Yeah.
From there, I asked a few other background questions
of my history, and from there,
they said, you're a candidate,
and we'll send you a customized serum and then a shampoo
conditioner, and I got it within a couple of days.
And how's it, is it easy to use?
Yeah, yeah, pretty easy to use, for sure.
Yeah, they give you a little syringe
that you apply the serum to, or, you know, on your
scalp, so.
But it's too early to tell if it works.
It is, yeah.
I haven't been using it for too long,
but they said maybe in like a month or two.
You have to be consistent, I'm sure.
Yes, you do.
You have to be very consistent in all the directions.
Well, maybe we'll revisit this.
I'm curious, because I'm reading about it everywhere.
Yeah, yeah.
I appreciate published material, but listen, if it works,
you can do it at home, and it's just about customizing to you.
Exactly.
Good for you.
Great, thank you.
Good luck.
Thanks.
Next up, Nikki says, is there an affordable,
over-the-counter shampoo that's been shown to help the hair growth?
It's called Ketoconazole.
It comes in a little bottle.
Easy to pick up.
You can get it at any drugstore.
You just want to make sure that the
ketoconazole is in the top five ingredients
to make sure you're actually getting the good stuff.
Originally, it was used for dandruff,
but we found that it actually
also helps with hair loss as a side effect
because it has an anti-inflammatory property
that really promotes hair growth.
It's a twofer.
Exactly.
Exactly.
Get rid of the dust at the same time.
All right.
Now, this is the cutting edge idea that
I thought we'd spend most of our time on.
It's laser therapy.
It's available for in-home as well as doctors use it in their offices.
Exactly.
There's real science behind this.
Yes.
There have been some small studies that show
that they might actually be helpful.
Right here, we have the cap.
They start at about $100.
Look at that.
I know.
They start at about $100, but they go up from there.
We also have the brush here, $35 they start at.
They go up from there, obviously, too.
These light diodes, the more there are in your unit,
the faster it works and the more expensive they are.
So this is going to take a lot longer than the at-home one.
The at-home one will take
a lot longer unless you buy the more expensive one.
Oh.
Exactly.
So the more money you spend, the more light diodes,
which means it's more effective and more quickly.
You just put it on for a couple minutes every day?
Every day.
Every day.
And it actually, like, dilates your vessels in your scalp,
so it, like, increases blood flow,
and it lengthens the growth cycle of your hair.
So you get longer, thicker hair over time.
Allegedly.
A gift from the show.
Oh.
Can I take a curl?
I don't think it works.
All right.
Troy, thank you very much.
Thank you.
Let me end talking about one other idea.
There's a lot of buzz about having some science behind this.
This is actually the only product that's been scientifically proven,
and it's FDA approved.
Remember that language?
FDA approved for female hair loss.
It's called minoxidil.
There's generic versions of this.
You know, it's not that expensive.
You can go to your doctor.
They can often prescribe it for you.
And they'll also often get an anti-inflammatory medication
to go with it at the same time.
So I want to take a minute to just explain this to you all
because it actually might make a difference
to a lot of people
and you're not wasting your money with this.
So let me go back into your hair here.
So this protocol sort of works together
because if you look at your hair,
a lot of women notice female pattern balding
when their hair starts to thin,
especially here at the part you'll see it a lot of times.
So a lot of times, if you look at the scalp,
there's actually some underlying inflammation.
See these areas right here where it's red and angry, right?
So you're going to deal with that.
So first you put a drop of one of these topical steroids on there.
That sort of calms the inflammation down a bit,
creates a better environment for the hair to grow.
Then you put some of that minoxidil on.
That sinks into the follicles.
The follicles will get bigger.
It'll stimulate growth of the hair and keep it in the right cycle.
So the new strands will come out thicker and fuller,
and thus the part and the rest
of your hair tends to fill in a little better.
See how happy she is, guys?
That's a happy avatar.
So ask a doc about that. It might be helpful. We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
Up next, Star of Empire actress Grace Byers is here. She's revealing
how she says we can all stop down bullying big time,
and she's got some health secrets that she swears by, including this.
Look at this.
Where's this tea from?
This is from the Cayman Islands where I grew up because,
you know, sometimes stress can be there, too.
This tastes really good.
That's Grace Byers in her breakout role
of the Fierce Record executive Anika Calhoun,
Lyon, on one of TV's hottest shows, Empire.
Today, the actress is opening up like never before about
her painful health struggles
and how she's fighting back against an epidemic
that she says is tearing our country apart.
Bullying.
Please welcome Grace Byers.
I'm so excited to have you here.
Oh, I'm so happy to be here.
I'm even happier to have you.
The audience is so...
Yay, I love it. How are you?
I'm doing very well. I am so impressed at your rapid ascent.
So you started in theater, very talented, obviously,
but then you get this breakout role in Empire
that just makes you an overnight sensation.
Oh, wow.
What's that like?
Oh gosh, well, originally I'm from the Cayman Islands,
and so it's a very small country,
and so anonymity is very huge, and so I learned how to prize that.
So, you know, coming from a theater background,
this was my first TV gig.
So it took away my anonymity a little bit,
so that took me a little time to get used to.
At the same point in time,
it brought me to a place where I said to myself, okay, if
I'm going to have notoriety, what do I want to do with this forum?
What's the opportunity that God's given you?
That's right.
So Trey, who I've had the honor of meeting both
of you, and they're such cuddly, lovely
little things together, which is so cool.
Cool.
But you met Trey on Empire,
which I had not realized when I first met you, and I'm just
curious, what's that like?
I mean, working with your husband is not always an easy task.
You know, I love it.
Isn't that strange?
It is strange.
I love it.
But Trey is so handsome.
He's charismatic.
I get it.
But also, too, you know, he and I are very, very, very professional.
And so we both have had lots of training in theater.
And so I think that focus and that discipline that we've had,
you know, doing our bachelor's,
doing our master's, you know, we bring that to set, you know.
So it's a lot of fun.
I mean, when we're working on the same day,
I'll prepare smoothies for us.
I'll pack our little lunches.
Oh, you're kidding.
How cute.
We'll have our little bags.
You carpool together.
Imagine this.
They hit traffic together.
They're both late.
Yeah, I know.
Or sometimes we'll, you know, for only an hour
or two apart in our call time,
we'll just go together and just, I mean, we do love to work together.
And just actually working with him is really wonderful.
I mean, he is, as you all know, he's a phenomenal actor.
You know, he's so good at what he does.
Yeah.
God, Trey is lucky.
He has no idea how lucky he is.
There's a topic that you've become vocal on that I'm very proud
for you for taking on which is bullying.
Yes.
And people deal with bullying in many different ways.
Yes.
But a lot of times folks who are fighting
the battle weren't bullied themselves.
Absolutely.
You're a little different because, and you may not know this,
but her parents don't hear. They're deaf.
Yes.
So what was that like growing up with them and how did that translate
to some of the bullying experiences you had as a young child?
Yeah, that's a great question.
I think a lot of times when we look at each other in life,
like, you know, because a lot of people will look at me and go,
oh my gosh, Grace, you look like you have the most perfect life.
Like, could you really have been bullied?
Could you really have experienced anything so dark and,
you know, all that stuff?
But I think the most important thing
to remember about anybody that we come across
is that it doesn't matter what somebody's life looks like.
Everybody has a story.
Everybody understands what it's like to struggle.
We may not have had the same experiences,
but that does not mean that we haven't had rejection, hurt, pain.
That we haven't been ostracized.
And I just think that just in general,
we just need to have a little bit more grace
and compassion for people.
But as a child, growing up as a CODA.
Thank you.
Explain what a CODA is.
A CODA is a child of deaf adults.
You know, you get a chance to understand
that the deaf culture is completely different.
It's actually a culture.
And so for me, it was tough just being
around kids who just didn't understand that, of course,
being so young, they see difference.
They think that something's wrong with you
if you're different than them.
So it took the form of bullying.
So.
They never understood my mom, why she sounded like that.
I was constantly, you know, asked questions,
castigated for things that I was like, I don't
know, she's just my mom.
I just love her.
I, you know, and so it was really tough.
And growing up with that mentality,
I always had in my mind that I was different.
And that translated to you're not enough,
you know, and also being biracial.
You're not white enough.
You're not black enough.
You're not, you know, hearing enough.
You're not your life.
Your family structure isn't perfect enough.
You didn't grow up with your father.
You you're in a single parent household.
So I always felt like I was lacking something.
So what did your mom.
Share with you, what hope did she give you to get past that bullying?
So, my mom, who actually is a huge fan of you.
I wish you'd brought her.
Oh my gosh, I should have.
Like, when I told her I was coming on your show,
she looked at me like I won an Oscar.
She was like, Dr. Ross, she's a huge fan of you.
Thank you.
So, yeah, I'll have to bring her for you to meet her.
But she had learned, my mom is very resilient,
and so she also was bullied, of course, being
a child and being deaf.
And she has, my mom has,
I've always known her to be a person to be so confident and
so accepting of herself.
And I think a big part of it is because she's so in tune with God,
you know, so she finds
her worth and her value in him.
And that just emanates from her.
So when I was a child, she would always
tell me, Grace, you are beautiful.
You are amazing.
You are talented.
You are enough.
You know, you don't have to listen
to what these kids are saying, you know.
So you wrote this beautiful children's book.
That I think can help anyone who's got a loved one who's being bullied.
And it's basically a letter to the eight-year-old version of yourself.
Yeah.
What you could have told yourself.
Right.
I think that, you know,
especially when you hear it from your mom, you know,
I was like, Mom, you're just saying that because you're my mom.
And A, yes, but B, no.
She was saying it because it's true.
But also with all of that.
I think that it's so much more important for us
to begin to have a world and outside narrative
where we're creating the ideology for our children that says,
you know, your value and
your worth does not lie in what other people say or think of you.
It lies in just the fact that you are worthy
because you have been given life by God on
this earth and simply because you're alive, you are valued.
Hallelujah.
Period.
Period.
The book is beautifully done, beautifully written.
It's called I Am Enough.
It is out now.
You know what?
Here.
Get one and give it to a friend as well.
Yes.
Use the book.
Up next, Grace is sticking around.
She's getting even more personal,
sharing some hot health secrets
from where she grew up in the Caribbean.
Including, I want to hear this secret for wound healing.
Stick around.
Let's go around.
He says the antidepressant he was taking
led him to murder his own son.
I was shocked.
It didn't make any sense.
Do you believe your father when he says
it's the pills that made him kill your brother?
All new Oz.
That's coming up tomorrow.
We're back with actress Grace Byers from Empire
and she's revealing the hottest health secrets from the Caribbean.
She swears by them. She's from the Caribbean. She knows it all.
The first health secret is surprising energy.
Pick me up. It's coconut and scotch bonnet peppers. Yes.
Teach everyone about why this works.
So this is a ceviche.
This is a coconut ceviche that I got from my very dear friends,
Luigi and Christina at Cayman Cabana,
local place back at home in the Cayman Islands.
And they use young coconuts, which is really great in protein.
And, of course, if you crack this open and you drink the water,
the hydration is fantastic.
And you just take the meat of that, and you want
to make sure that it's not too hard and not too soft, right?
So it's nicely, you know, chopped when we chop it up,
and then when we eat it, it's, you know, it's nice and...
Like Goldilocks.
Ceviche. Yes, I love it.
And the Scotch bonnet, this is different than a habanero.
Hi, everyone.
You can get it from your local Caribbean store,
and there's a lot in the major cities.
And what you want to do in this case
is you want to chop it very finely,
and you want to make sure that you don't eat it with the seeds.
Way too hot.
Way too hot, I shouldn't take a bite this like this.
No, I know enough about Grace Byers. I see you guys wanting me to bite into this
There's a Scotch bonnet pepper. That one is super spicy.
This is a regular, you know, pepper
They have this scale, they use jalapeno
for example 2500 on that scale. That's the Scoville heat scale
This is a hundred thousand. You don't want it hundred thousand.
It's 40 times hotter than a regular pepper
Yes, you don't want to do it. Ah, it's burning my... I put my lips on it
If I do it the way you do it, does it taste like this?
Yes, and so here we have some bell peppers, some cilantro.
You have a little bit of mango to give it some color.
But this Scotch bonnet will give you that flavorful heat.
Not just the hot heat, but the flavor.
It's flavorful almost.
Very nicely done, Grace.
Yes.
A little bit of lime.
Yep.
I'm not even a big hot eater.
Yes.
It hurts me.
Good idea.
And I like the fact that it mimics what a fish ceviche would be.
Absolutely.
It's got that same little stringiness to it.
Yes, and it's naturally vegan, so if you don't like meat, that's great.
But if you do like meat,
you can also add some grilled shrimp on top of that.
Good.
All right.
The final trick is a lemongrass tea to help de-stress and detox.
Frankly, going to the Caribbean where you're from,
we would think would de-stress us.
But as you point out, life is a challenge wherever you live it.
Exactly.
So how do you make this?
Okay, so this is what you call lemongrass, right?
But back home, we actually grow this in stalks,
and we call it fever grass tea, right?
And I think a lot of people from the Caribbean
understand what fever grass tea is.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And the reason why we call it that
is because when we don't feel well
and our temperature changes,
drinking this tea will actually normalize
our temperature in our bodies.
Oh, my goodness.
I know.
It's really wonderful.
And when that happens, your body just starts to calm down.
It really relaxes you.
And my mom likes to do a little bit of mint, fresh mint in there.
Just drop it in.
And it's so good for digestion as well.
It'll settle the stomach, and it will calm all of your nerves.
You can just boil it for just a little bit, and then you can strain it.
If I understand correctly,
the lemongrass should boil for about five, six minutes.
Five, six minutes because it's a tougher stalk.
Right, and then you add the mint at the very end.
Yep, the last few minutes.
And you pour it out.
That's right.
Without spilling it too much like me.
Yeah.
I should have let you do that.
Thankfully.
And then you put a little honey.
Is that correct?
Yes.
If you want it to be a little sweeter, you can put a little honey.
And the great news about this is that you can have this warm or cold.
You know what?
You de-stressed me.
Yay.
God bless you.
And I want to thank your mom for making you and raising you so well.
Oh, thank you.
And she's invited whenever she wants back.
Thank you.
Grace Byers, check her out.
Thank you.
Empire, Wednesday nights on Fox.
You know where to see it.
We'll be right back.
God bless you.
Thanks, guys.
Super carbs to supercharge your weight loss.
Let's end the war on bread.
Plus, Terry Crews on being sexually harassed
and his secret porn addiction.
All new Oz.
That's coming up on Wednesday.
We're backstage, I'm gonna let you in on a little secret.
Come closer.
So, I asked my go-to tester to be here today to try these.
They're the new tearless onions that just hit the market
promising dry eyes when you slice and dice them,
but here's the thing.
I switched them out on Renatha's table.
She's got regular onions at her table.
I gave myself these tearless ones.
I can't wait to see what happens.
So don't tell anybody.
You got to go, Dr. Oz.
Hey, Renata.
You ready, Renata?
All right.
Hey, guys.
You ready to go?
Yeah.
All right, do it right.
Enjoy these onions.
Enjoy them.
We're talking about these new sunions.
They're called sunions, which you may have read about there.
They're the new tear-free onions.
But here's the question. Do they work?
So to make things interesting, we're going to have a little contest
to see who has the fastest onion chopper on the chopping block.
Renata, are you ready?
Yes.
All right.
But you know what, though?
The only thing that makes me cry is hysterical laughing, okay?
So I don't know about crying on TV, okay?
I love crying in victory.
All right, you ready to go?
Yeah.
Ready, set, chop.
Now, while we're chopping here, I'm going
to teach you guys a little bit of something.
There we are.
Wait.
You're going to waste time peeling it.
These things, these onions,
they're called tearless onions for a reason.
They have an ability.
To be cut without causing you having eye problems
a regular onion produces a gas that when it hits your eyes
Irritates them and stimulates glands that produce tears
not so with these tear free onions because when someone
Cuts through them those chemicals aren't
turned off. They get sweeter over time
Well, why would I?
The reason you cry with onions
Why am I tearing up, though?
Why am I tearing up?
There's something wrong with you.
Why am I tearing up?
Are you sad about something
Is this the right?
Why am I tearing up?
Why are you?
You're not tearing up.
Go away.
They don't have the volatile compounds in there, right?
They don't have those irritants in your eyes.
Tell them about this onion, Dr. Oz, because it's making me tear up.
Oh, my goodness.
What the dickens?
Are you sad about something?
No, I'm not sad!
Are you serious?
Dr. Oz, what is happening here?
I'm going to finish cutting this onion, though.
These aren't bothering my eyes at all.
I don't understand.
How's yours been, Barb?
Look at mine.
I'm just fine.
Dr. Oz.
I have nothing here.
Well, what do I have?
This is the onion, right?
I love you. Put the knife down first.
Just in case.
I love this.
I tricked you. Get over here.
It's bothering me too.
You got the real onions over there.
Someone had to get the real onions.
Someone had to get the real onions.
Don't make no sense.
Start messing up my makeup.
You look beautiful no matter what.
Oh, thank you.
But you know, seriously, I didn't realize why onions made you cry.
They don't actually affect you the way emotions affect you.
They're irritant in there.
And these are not genetically modified.
They just sort of bred them differently.
How do they do that?
Well, they picked the ones that had the least irritating elements.
They had more babies.
They had more babies.
And we ended up with these.
Okay.
So I think they actually work.
And you just proved it.
Oh, all right.
So emotional.
But to make you happy.
George, the Institute of Culinary Education wants to teach you.
Oh.
So if you'll take the gift from them to you
and a friend to go take a class, will you do that for me?
Yes!
Will you forgive me then for my bad behavior?
Thank you.
Angel Renata.
Remember, everybody, happy holidays starts at home.
Even if you're crying, it still starts at home.
