Toddler dies after being struck by vehicle in Calgary parking lot
Nov 3, 2026
Calgary police are investigating the death of a toddler.
A taxi struck the child in this parking lot on Sunday.
Police say the two-year-old boy was with his parents near their vehicle
outside Sunridge Shopping Centre around 5:30 in the afternoon.
We think possibly, and this is early stages, he slipped
the hand of his father
and then as kids do they run off.
And unfortunately he ran out because the two parking lots
are separated by a road that leads out onto the main road.
He says the driver stopped his taxi right away
and took the victim and his family to the hospital nearby.
He made a decision which I think was the right decision
with the Peter Lougheed right next door.
Had it been any other hospital
then obviously we would have waited for an ambulance to come.
Sunridge Mall said in a statement
that it's deeply saddened by the tragic incident.
The Calgary Police Traffic Section is now investigating.
I'm going to maintain some separation at this time,
not knowing the specific circumstances
that led to that tragic loss of life,
but absolutely heartbreaking to hear about.
This is the 10th pedestrian death in Calgary in 2024
and the 33rd traffic fatality overall.
Police are asking anyone
who witnessed this incident or has dash cam footage
to contact them. Colleen Underwood, CBC News, Calgary.
