Motive remains unclear in Moss Landing shooting

People starred in Moss Landing, where the Monterey County Sheriff's Office says two people are dead and two others hurt after a shooting there. It happened just after midnight near Moss Landing State Beach. KTVU's Ann Rubin joins us now live from that scene with the latest from authorities. Ann? Yeah, within the last hour, authorities cleared the scene and reopened this beach. Right now, they have few answers as to what happened here, and they say this is just the beginning of a long investigation. Moss Landing State Beach is known for wildlife, for fishing, and for being scenic. Today, it's a crime scene. Just after 2 a.m., Monterey County authorities responded to reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they were able to locate two victims. Tragically, those two victims were declared deceased here on the scene. Two dead, two others injured. One of them transported from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries. The other turned up at the hospital later with gunshot wounds. Authorities aren't saying what a motive might have been or whether the victims knew each other. We're very early in this investigation. It's very important that we not speculate as to what happened here. We do not have those details. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office is processing the crime scene. They say while the bodies were found on Jetty Road, there was a second area of interest that looks like the site of a beach party. We do have people that come together and have parties. This beach does close at sunset. So these people were here after hours. Authorities have not said whether guns were recovered at the scene, and they haven't ruled out the chance there's a shooter at large. There is a possibility of that. We have not said that that's not the case. We have simply said that we do not feel that there's an active threat to the Moss Landing community. Investigators are hoping witnesses will come forward to shed some light on what happened here. In the meantime, visitors can expect to see more park rangers on this stretch of sand. We will increase our patrols in this area in the coming days to have a presence. The deceased in this case have not yet been identified and we have no updated condition on the victims. Again, authorities have not said whether these people knew each other. Heather, Alex. All right. And so and just to be clear, authorities have not offered any information on on a potential suspect if that person is still outstanding. None. And, you know, they aren't saying whether there is a person outstanding, whether there isn't. They said it's just too early to really give away any of that information. I will tell you, you know, we're standing here at what appears to be the scene of the beach party. You can see women's shoes. You can see a lot of alcohol, some glow sticks and a speaker from, you know. For music, it sounds like whatever happened, there was a group that was enjoying themselves. We actually just met a young man who said he was there last night. People ran when they heard the gunfire. So, again, we're getting little bits of information, but police said it's just too soon to speculate as to what might have happened.
