All right, after nearly a decade, one congressional seat
representing parts of the Bronx and upper Manhattan is up for grabs.
Let's get right to Jonathan Calixto,
who's outside a polling site with the very latest on this race.
Jonathan.
That's right. Now here at this Kingsbridge Heights polling site,
voting is already underway just behind me here.
I even spoke with one person
that was waiting more than 30 minutes before this site opened.
And that's as it'll be a very interesting race here in the 13th
Congressional District that represents parts of Upper Manhattan
and the Bronx as neighbors here will be shaping the district's future.
Voting for a new representative for the first time in nearly a decade.
Now take a look just behind those doors here.
Neighbors will be voting between Republican
Manuel Williams, an Army veteran,
and Democratic Socialist Darielisa Avila-Chevalier,
who defeated longtime Congressman Adriano Espaillat
in the Democratic primary.
Now for one voter, 25-year-old Steven Mangia,
he tells me why it was important to show up before everyone else.
More of an early bird.
I'd rather just do it as soon as possible.
Top of mind is people first.
Anything that is
helpful towards the community
and the people is what matters most
because at the end of the day people is what
creates the change.
And on the ballot here,
Darialisa Avila-Chevalier was the candidate that unseated five-term
incumbent Adriano Espaillat in June's Democratic primary.
The Dominican-American activist was also one
of three congressional candidates who endorsed
by Mayor Zohran Mamdani,
with all three going on to win their respective primaries.
Now, as for her Republican challenger,
Manuel Williams, while he has maintained a lower
public profile during the campaign.
His platform describes him as a Harlem native
and a business owner in this district.
Now, as a reminder, polling sites will
remain open until 9 p.m. tonight.
And once again, we'll be covering this race very closely along
with several others, both online and on air.
In Kingsbridge Heights, Jonathan Calixto, News 12.
