Peel Regional Police are linking this suspect here
to an earlier call for intimate partner
violence. That call had come in at around 3
o'clock in the afternoon yesterday, a call
out of Brampton. They had a suspect name at the time
and there was a description from
the scene that that person had a gun.
So at that point, the 911 call came in for the intimate
intimate partner violence.
They had just the name through the police. They were
conducting their investigation trying to speak
with potential witnesses trying to locate
that individual. Then a 911 call came
in at this university campus the University of Toronto at
Mississauga saying that that person with the same name
the 19 year old allegedly involved in the
intimate partner violence call was in one of the residences here
and the people inside called
They had information that he was armed
and police say that they had also
reported that the individual was acting erratically.
Those folks self-evacuated
so they got themselves out of the building
while the suspect then according to police
barricaded themselves in an upstairs bedroom.
Here's Peel Police with what happened next.
We quickly connected the dots between that location
and this location and the suspect.
That's why our response was very heavy.
To get here to prevent the possibility of a mass casualty situation.
It was quickly determined that no one else was inside
and we slowed things down.
We were able to contain the suspect to try
and engage a successful resolution.
Police were on scene shortly after 9 o'clock and
we were able to confirm the individual was deceased at around 1.30.
So police had the residents really surrounded with regular cruisers
and tactical teams
as well. They described trying to coax this suspect out
and hearing several gunshots while
that suspect was inside the residence.
So at around 1 30 in the morning police officers went in.
And they say that they found the 19-year-old suspect deceased.
The SIU, the Special Investigations Unit,
say that that individual was found
to be deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The SIU is part of this investigation. They always do get
involved in investigations anytime there's a police interaction
that results in the death or an injury of a civilian.
They can report that there was no exchange of gunfire between
the suspect and the police. There is no evidence of
any of the police officers firing their guns.
As you can imagine this would have been an incredibly
Frightening scene with the students who we spoke with today.
They had fears of potentially an active shooter on campus.
So the way things turned out, still a tragedy in the end.
The suspect here, the deceased person,
19 year old was not a student at U of T.
So there are plenty of questions as well
in terms of the security, at least for the students here
who are reeling from what happened.
