In Oramucto, two firefighters are recovering after becoming trapped
while responding to a house fire on Sunday morning.
The fire started around 5.30 a.m.,
according to the Oramucto Fire Department.
The fire chief says when firefighters arrived on scene,
a large portion of the house was burning.
They were just starting their search on the second floor
when we had a roof collapse and
it resulted in two of the firefighters becoming trapped.
One of the firefighters was in a void
area and the other one had the roof actually on top of him
and pinned him down. One of the
firefighters was able to activate a Mayday
and he pressed the emergency button on his radio and got a
Mayday message out to everybody else.
That was followed by the dispatch centre doing our protocol.
And then other firefighters went in to start
the rescue of those firefighters that were trapped.
So you say a void area,
that means just contained in a room area but not pinned?
He was, he was...
That firefighter was able to move somewhat,
but he was trapped and he was unable to get out.
So the roof had come down, but it hadn't actually pinned him
to the floor like it had the other
firefighter. One of the firefighters was able to,
after a little bit of help, he was able to get out
on his own. And then the other firefighter,
they had to lift a portion of the roof off of him,
take his air pack off.
Extricate him out and then put his air pack back on and bring him out.
In the meantime, other firefighters had used a saw,
a chainsaw, and they were actually cutting
a hole at the top of the stairwells to get them
to get them down the stairwell and we were able
to bring them down through the stairwell.
One of our firefighters was transported to hospital by
ambulance Brunswick.
He was released later that day and he's out now home recovering.
