Welcome back
in hour
number
three
of the
program
here
on Monday
morning.
And normally at this time, we would be joined
by New Bedford City Council President Ryan Perrera,
but he's under the weather today.
Got a doctor's appointment,
so he's not going to make it in with us, but we can still talk.
You and I at 508-996-0500,
app chat and open line voicemails on the WBSM app.
We have the election tomorrow.
I think a lot of us, no matter what the outcome is,
we'll just be happy that this is over.
It's been a long process, and it's certainly been a, I
want to say, educational process for a lot of people.
There were many folks paying attention to this.
election season that I think either never paid attention
to elections before or maybe it'd been
a while so a lot of this stuff was new to them
and they realized like I've got a lot of homework
to do and and kudos to all the people
who did that a lot of folks out there who have reached
out to us and said or have called in
and said you know this has been very beneficial hearing
people talk about the issues
and the candidates especially on south coast now Chris McCarthy
He's tried to have as many of the candidates in as he could.
He and Barry have been covering some of the questions,
so I think that you've got a pretty good primer here for things,
but just so many people who took it upon themselves
to become more educated voters this time around,
and hopefully they stay involved in the process and keep up with things
because next year we'll have our local municipal election.
So a lot of things going on here in New Bedford that you'll want
to have a voice in because things are going to change.
We've been talking about the fact that your property taxes
are going to go up and so much more.
So I do want to talk about an issue that came up last Friday.
But before we do that, let's take a phone call here.
508-996-0500.
Good morning.
You're on WBSN.
Good morning.
I was wondering, is there an official date for Indian summer?
No, I don't think so.
I think it's just the idea that there is a warm spell
that happens at some point once the fall begins.
Oh, okay.
Are we in it, you think?
I feel like we had, certainly last week we had some days.
This week is still going to be pretty, it's going to be like,
what, in the 60s, mid-60s, most of the days.
I think that's about average for this time of year, isn't it?
I don't know.
I'm looking forward to some nice warm weather.
Yeah.
I mean, hey, anytime we can have a day where you can walk around
in just a sweatshirt is fine by me.
Uh-huh.
Especially because I can't find my winter jacket.
Oh, good luck.
Thank you so much.
You have a good day.
And, yes, it says here that Indian summer is, it's...
A period of unseasonably warm, dry,
and hazy weather that occurs during autumn,
typically in October or November, after the season's first frost.
And it says it comes from a shift in the jet stream
that pushes warm subtropical air northward.
So, and the name comes from a time when Native Americans utilized
the extended warmth to complete late harvests,
gather winter stores, or extend hunting trips.
So I don't know, have we had a frost yet?
I know we've had some nights that were pretty cold, but I don't know
if we've gotten to the point where we've had a frost yet.
I think the coldest morning that I can remember was 37,
and I've been driving myself crazy at my apartment because I was like,
why is it so cold in here?
It's not that cold outside.
If I open the door outside and go outside,
it's not nearly as cold as in here.
Where is this draft coming from that I can't find?
And then I went around and made sure all my windows were closed,
and then I just realized it's probably just me,
probably just getting old, just going to have to walk around the house.
You know, a couple layers.
508-996-0500.
Good morning.
You're next on WBSN.
Good morning.
How are you?
Good.
How are you doing?
Tired.
I had between 500, 550 and 600 kids this year.
Wow.
I'm totally exhausted.
Do you want to say how much you had to spend on candy?
I spent about $400.
Oof.
And I do that every year.
Last year, I had like 500.
This year, it's total more than that.
It was between 550 and 600.
But it's worth it to make sure they don't toilet paper your house.
Oh, my God, yeah.
I'm up by the beach in Ocean Grove,
and this is a particular, you know, big area.
You know what I mean?
They pack these streets like no tomorrow.
Well, I'm glad that you were able to give candy to all those kids
and not have to get any trick played on you.
No, they were all polite kids and all good kids.
So, I mean, it was just a heavy crowd, you know?
What was the best costume you saw?
I think I've seen a lot of them.
I mean, the kids were unbelievable with their costumes,
most of them, you know?
But eventually we get to the age where we don't recognize
who the characters are they're dressing up as anymore.
You know, a lot of people can't afford it, you know?
I'm sure a lot of people didn't get candy this year
because it was so expensive.
It was like $30 a bag, you know?
You know, so go today.
you probably get it for fifteen or twelve, you know?
Right.
And then there are people that will get it today
and try to save it for next Halloween.
I wouldn't advise that, but they try.
No, I wouldn't do that.
You have a good day.
You too.
Take care.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
I have a friend who went out and got candy for a party.
That was gluten-free, non-GMO, like, you know,
got healthy candy, the healthiest candy that she could get
because people that were attending her party had, you know,
dietary issues and restrictions and was telling us about,
like, what the costs are for that kind of candy.
I was like, oh, my God.
And then somebody said, well, why are you surprised?
Look at how much regular candy costs.
I said I didn't even think about that.
You know, it's not even just a matter of how much
are you paying for a bag of candy on Halloween.
We think, okay, they jacked the price up for Halloween, right?
But it's just how much does candy cost overall?
You know, you like to think you can go into a store
and get a candy bar for 50 cents, but no, a candy bar is like 2.50 now.
I don't buy a lot of them, so I don't really know.
But every once in a while, like at bowling, every once in a while,
I'd get like three Musketeers out of the vending machine.
And that was $1.50.
And then you go into a store and it's like more than that.
Crazy. And here I thought, you know,
candy was, I don't want to say penny candy,
but I would have
thought, you know, if you walked into a candy store with $10,
you could walk out with a pretty
good haul, but I guess not anymore.
I love Charleston chews. I wonder how much those
things cost. So like three or four times the size of a candy bar.
It's funny. Cause I had to go up
to Lexington for that, uh, that, uh, presentation I did Friday night.
And I was trying to get out
out of here a little bit early so that I could swing by.
The Wayside Inn, first, I was going to try
to have dinner there before I went to my presentation.
It didn't really work out.
But I was also like, then I can go into the gift shop and get Sky Bars.
Because I do love Sky Bars.
And that's where they invented them, was in Sudbury.
So the Wayside Inn sells them in the gift shop.
It's one of the few places left you can find Sky Bars.
But who knows how much I would have paid for them.
That's all right.
It all worked out in the end anyway.
Got out of my lecture at like 9 o'clock,
drove to Kowloon, one of my favorite places on Earth.
All right, so I want to bring up this story
that Michael Rock had on Friday afternoon.
So he got this video over at Fun 107,
sent to them Friday morning, and then he spent
the day trying to chase down, first of all,
if what happened was wrong, and then what
was being done about it.
So you can read the story at WBSM.com.
The title of the story is Video Shows New
Bedford School Bus Driving Wrong Way on One
Way Street.
So the school bus was driving west on Nash Road in New Bedford.
This was Thursday morning that the video was captured
with traffic backing up near the Bombshell Lashes business.
The school bus driver is seen in the video crossing
the double yellow line to pass two vehicles that were stopped ahead.
So instead of waiting in traffic, he just crossed the yellow line,
got in the other lane and then took a left going
the wrong way down Stanley Street, a one way street.
And the person who caught this on tape told Michael Rock
that this was at least the third
or fourth time this past month that he's seen
the same bus driving the wrong way on that
same one-way street,
and that the bus was carrying elementary school children.
So Michael Rock reached out to New Bedford Public Schools.
We have not heard back yet.
Also reached out to New Bedford police to find out, is there a reason?
In the video, you don't see anybody directing traffic down that way.
Sometimes when there's traffic,
they might direct you down one way in the wrong direction
because they've shut it down
to traffic coming from that other direction.
But there was no indication of that, no detour signs,
no police officer or anybody working in detail.
I went by there.
When I got out of here and took a look,
there was nothing going on that would have called that, you know, a lot
of people in the comments said, well, there's a lot of road work going
on with 195 and everything, but this was nowhere near any of that.
So the police department responded and said,
the video has been forwarded to the North End commander for review,
and we'll be looking into the matter.
And Tremblay Bus Company told Michael Rock
that they had turned the matter over to their legal team.
So we don't know what the outcome has been of this and what
the reasoning was, but we'll certainly follow up on that.
And people commenting, they say...
Buses do this more often than you realize,
going the wrong way down a one-way street.
I can't imagine that that's true.
I can't imagine bus drivers are knowingly going
the wrong way down a one-way street.
I hope nobody comes the other way.
I'm not aware of any obscure law that allows bus drivers
to go the wrong way down a one-way street.
But the idea that this driver crosses
the double yellow line to go around traffic
and then goes the wrong way down a one-way street?
There's some comments of people saying like, oh, what's the big deal?
Well, the big deal is that's hugely dangerous.
And if this had been the opposite situation where a school bus
was parked and there were people crossing the double yellow line
to go around a school bus, we'd be getting 20 people sending us
that video and saying, who are these people?
Look at them.
They can't even wait behind a bus.
So it's pretty disturbing footage to see that that's how
a school bus driver is driving the school bus.
And whether there were kids on the bus at the point
when they took the wrong turn or not,
still breaking the law.
So I don't know what the outcome
of this will be, but we'll certainly
keep chasing it down and trying to find out.
Is this something that you've seen? Have you seen
bus drivers going the wrong way down a one way?
I don't think I've ever seen that in my life.

In just a couple of weeks.
We are going to be holding our annual,
it'll be the 34th year we've done it, our annual Hunger Heroes
Food Drop along with the United Way of Greater New Bedford,
helping to collect Thanksgiving meal items for families in need
to make sure that everybody can have a Thanksgiving dinner this year.
We're going to be at Aldi in Dartmouth on Saturday,
November 14th from 10 a.m. to noon,
and you can come on by and donate the necessary items.
Cans of cranberry sauce.
Plastic jars of gravy, no glass jars please,
boxes of stuffing, instant mashed potatoes,
cans of vegetables, the items that are non-perishable.
And every year people ask, well, what about a turkey?
Can I donate a turkey?
Nope, nope, no need to do that because they get those donated.
They get certificates that the people can use
to get a turkey or whatever meat that
they want, but they're looking for the non-perishable items
because they collect all these items
up and then the week after they put them all together in baskets.
So they want non-perishable items
and they want no glass jars because they could get broken.
So that's why we want everything in plastic or cardboard.
And as we get closer, I'm sure Victoria will come on with us
and talk with us more in depth about it.
But you can pull right up on November 14th
from 10 to noon outside of Aldi.
You can pull right up and say, it's in my backseat,
it's in my truck, we'll take it out of your car.
You don't have to get out of the car.
If you don't have anything to donate, you can walk into Aldi.
They'll have it all on display for you
to purchase and come out and hand to us.
Or if you want to donate online,
the United Way of Greater New Bedford
has an Amazon wishlist
that you can check out
to buy some items and donate that way.
The important thing here
is that we're able to help out our neighbors,
help out our fellow South Coasters,
even though we're probably all struggling
to be able to afford to put a Thanksgiving meal
on our own family's table.
When you're buying your canned yams,
just grab an extra can
and drop that off to us.
If you're buying your gravy,
drop off an extra one for us.
You don't have to support
somebody's entire meal.
Just one or two items
can make all the difference
in the world.
And we want to thank
our great sponsors
for helping us make it happen.
Carefree Homes
and Aaron Pools and Spas.
Again, it's happening outside
Aldi in Dartmouth
Saturday, November 14th
from 10 a.m. to noon.
The 34th United Way

A Florida jet crash kills nine, several mass shootings reported
on Halloween, and rare owls return to New York.
From the Cottage Street Motors WBSM Newsroom, this is WBSM News.
Nine people are dead after a Learjet crashed in a Palm Beach County,
Florida neighborhood yesterday.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called it a horrific tragedy.
It's not clear yet if anyone was injured on the ground.
The aircraft was headed from Austin, Texas to the Bahamas
when it went down in a residential area near Cresthaven.
The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash.
Police in three states are investigating mass shootings on Halloween.
Four people dead and dozens injured after
a series of shootings overnight in Dallas.
One person killed, eight others wounded in Alabama
when gunfire erupted outside of a Legion field in Birmingham
after the annual Magic City Classic football game, and at least six
people injured after a shooting near the University of Delaware.
Witnesses said Main Street was packed
with college students celebrating Halloween when gunshots rang out.
A group of homeless New Yorkers that froze
to death last winter are finally being laid to rest
thanks to the work of a local philanthropist, Rhonda Rowland Shearer.
Nine out of the 18 people
who were found dead on city streets over the winter
will be remembered at St. Thomas Church in Manhattan today at 5.30 p.m.
For All Souls Day at the church on Fifth Avenue.
It's a day celebrated in the Christian faith
to honor those who have passed away.
Shearer hopes that this will once again raise awareness
as the temperature starts to drop once again
and the service will be open to the public.
Senator Chris Murphy has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke.
A spokesperson for the Connecticut Democrat's office said he
was taken to a local hospital

He was later transferred to Johns Hopkins

A new study shows younger adults living alone face more health risks.
Researchers say living alone increases
a person's risk of death from a variety of
different causes, especially among adults aged 18 to 64.
The study team found that a solitary life
raised risk of death by 22% for people 18 to 64.
Younger and middle-aged adults living alone
face the highest risk of death from suicide,
heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, and injuries.
The lead researcher from the American Cancer Society noted
that living alone was not the
of higher death rate
but that those who live alone tend to have unhealthy habits. I'm Lisa

A federal judge ruled this week that McDonald's must face
a proposed class-action lawsuit
accusing the fast-food chain
of misleading customers about the meat used in its McRib.
A U.S. district judge in Chicago rejected
the company's bid to dismiss the lawsuit in its entirety,
allowing consumer deception.
Fraud and unjust enrichment claims to proceed.
The lawsuit filed by four consumers in December,
alleging that McDonald's designed
the McRib patty to resemble a rack of pork ribs
despite containing no actual rib meat.
The plaintiffs argue that the sandwich's name,
appearance, and marketing
misleads customers into believing they're purchasing
a more expensive cut of pork.
The ruling allows portions of the case to proceed,
but does not establish that McDonald's engaged
in deceptive advertising.

and if you are thinking
about going solar now is the time to really find out about it
because we are getting to the crunch
time before the end of the year
when the solar credits will go away and you might be saying
yourself well Tim there's no way I can afford
to buy solar panels right now. Not with everything
that's going on I'm still trying to pay off
my high electric bills from the summertime.
When I had the air conditioning running, and I know you're telling me
that going solar will save me money on those bills,
but I'm still going to pay for these ones, right?
Well, you do, but you also don't have
to pay for your solar panels right now.
You can pay outright, sure, but you can also pay monthly.
You might not even be a good fit for solar.
Isaacson Solar is willing to come out and tell you.
If you are a good fit or not,
they have no problem telling you, listen, it's not going
to work out here.
There's trees in the way,
the way your roof is shaped, it won't work out.

Whatever it may be, they'll let you know and they're happy to,
they're not disappointed

because they know that they were able to answer
your questions.
But if you are a good fit for solar,
they'll design a system tailored to your home and
the energy you can actually use.
And if you've ever seen Isaacson Solar solar panels,
you can check out their Facebook page

But if you've ever seen them, you can tell a lot of times you
don't even realize they're up there.

Election day tomorrow,
you've got nine ballot questions here
in Massachusetts to deal with.
If you are not sure how you're voting on them all,
take today to go over them.
You can write down a little notepad or something
about how you want to vote for each one,
and you can take that in with you.
There's nothing wrong with that.
And that'll save you time in the voting booth
so you don't have to sit there and read all the questions.
But also, you know, you can be more thoughtful in your analysis
of it at home than you are when you're standing there.
And somebody's probably waiting to come in and use that spot.
So take the time to look them all over
and then go in and know how you're going to vote ahead of time.
And in New Bedford, it is a two-page ballot
because there are so many races to cover and then the nine questions.
So you're going to get your first sheet where you're going
to vote for everybody.
Then on the back, you're going to start with the questions.
And then on the second piece, the second ballot piece
of paper for the ballot, the questions continue.
Polls will open tomorrow morning at 7 a.m.
They'll close tomorrow at 8 p.m.
And no early voting today.
Early voting ended on Friday.
So hopefully if you didn't get out there and do it already,
you'll have time tomorrow to get out there and do it.
And it's important not just here, but all over the country,
there are these key races that you see, you know,
the drama is building up in these races all over.
The weekend was full of all different kinds of news.
I think the Michigan Senate race certainly got a lot
of coverage yesterday with Haley Stevens deciding she was no longer,
she had previously endorsed Abdul El-Sayed and said,
nope, nope, not going to do that anymore.
And instead endorsed his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers.
And I would just be careful to all the people that are piling on her.
And if you saw her interview last night on CNN,
I think there's something wrong there.
This is just my armchair analysis, but there's something wrong there.
She wasn't able to answer these questions.
I don't know.
I just, I get the feeling something's going on.
And there's all this speculation that,
you know, her fiance is pressuring her and, you
know, her staff has quit on her now.
And it's a really weird situation.
But I think there's more to the story that we're not being told.
And I just, I hope she's okay.
And I hope this is just a, you know,
something that she's making of sound mind and that she's
not being pressured into it.
But oh my God, that interview was a train wreck last night.
And I'm sure you'll see it going around this morning on social media.
I've got to get a break in here.

For the longest time, it was hard for me to even get out of the house,
much less do a backside 180.
That's when I made the call.
With my doctor's help, I was diagnosed with anxiety.
Now I'm finding better ways to cope.
Sure, some days are better than others,
but the whole thing about getting out of the house,
that's not really an issue anymore.

I was asking earlier about how many kids you got for trick-or-treating.
DSY said, no kids.
I was at the Z watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Had a great time.
I was a little disappointed in that, though,
because the Zyterian did have the Rocky Horror Picture Show,
but they had it at like 8 o'clock at night.
It was like 7 or 8 o'clock at night that it started.
It's like, no, it's got to be midnight.
And I get it.
The Zyterian is staffed by all volunteers
and many of them are older folks.
They don't want to be out at midnight.
They don't want to be leaving at two o'clock in the morning
and heading home after everybody's leaving
all of their Halloween parties
and who knows how safe the roads are.
I totally get it.
But to me, the Rocky Horror Picture Show
is a midnight showing kind of thing.
And I think too, that if you...
If you have it earlier in the evening, maybe people can still get out
and go and do Halloween parties and stuff like that.
But if it was at midnight, people that are doing
stuff earlier could have made it out there.
Maybe two showings next year, Zyterian?
Or somebody.
Somebody pick up the mantle of having
a midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
508-996-0500.
Good morning.
You're on WBSN.
Good morning.
Hi.
Hi.
Hey, Trick or Treaters.
Yes.
I bought six bags from BJ's.
About 110.
Pieces per bag, and we ran out.
I tried to limit the kids to, you know,
all one piece per trick-or-treater.
I think we had over 550 kids.
Wow. Whereabouts do you live?
You don't have to give your exact address, but whereabouts?
In the village of Payneur.
All the houses are close together, so, you know,
kids can get to a lot of houses in a short amount of time.
Are there a lot of kids in the neighborhood,
or are these kids that might have come from somewhere else?
Well, both, mostly someplace else.
Payneurum has a parade every year for little kids,
and it starts at 4.30,
and it's usually kids that run from,
I don't know, 3 to 8, 9, 10 years old or so.
And that parade runs.
It's just a marching parade, so to speak,
nothing fancy, but kids enjoy it.
And it's about five, six blocks.
And then what happens, I live up the hill.
So after the parade, all the kids come up the hill.
So we get a surge of little kids, and then it calms down,
and then we get a surge of middle school kids
and even some high school kids.
So it's kind of fun.
But every year, this is the most this year, I think,
because it was a decent day and it was a Saturday.
Yeah.
I'll say, I don't know if you need to be that prepared for next year,
but now you know you might have to have a little bit more on hand.
Okay, yep, that's it.
Have a good day.
And the worst part about it, no extras for you,
no leftovers for you to be snacking on afterward.
No, that's what I was most upset about.
Wow.
Well, go get some on discount today, I guess.
All right, thanks.
Have a good day.
Bye.
I remember, so I get that.
I get the fact that the kids are already there for the parade
and they're going to just go there.
But I remember when I was in middle school
and I had moved to Sandwich and...
The kids had strategies about what neighborhoods to go to.
They didn't necessarily trick-or-treat in their own neighborhoods.
They would go to other neighborhoods where they knew,
because out in that area, you might
go to a neighborhood that's not as dense, not as densely populated.
So they knew which ones had the most houses
and which houses gave the best candy.
And all that.
So yeah, they would map it all out.
Not literally.
They're not like actually drawing maps.
But they knew where to go.
And so like, one kid would live in that neighborhood.
It wasn't like they were just randomly
showing up in neighborhoods nobody lived in.
But like everybody would go to that kid's neighborhood
that lived in that neighborhood.
And then they would go around their neighborhood first.
And then maybe they would go to somebody else's neighborhood.
And they would do this over the course of the evening.
And try to maximize the amount of candy that they were getting.
And I only lived in East Sandwich.
I was only there for one Halloween before we moved
to the other side of town.
And it was probably some of the most candy I'd gotten.
And it rained that year.
But I just think it was people were like,
oh, we're not going to get a lot of kids.
So they're just like, here, here, here,
take a whole bunch, here, take a whole bunch.
Because they figured kids weren't going to come out.
So I wonder if they all ran out.
And then when I moved to the other side of town,
I didn't have to go anywhere.
Because my neighborhood was one of the places everybody came to.
You could walk, lived off Snake Pond Road,
you could walk maybe, you know, three, four miles total on foot
and fill up every bag you could possibly bring with you.
And these families knew how to do it.
You know, they're giving you, here, here's a big handful.
No, have another big handful.
Like, they did not run out.
All right, I got to get one more break in here.
What do I got?
One, two, one.
One more break here.
So let me take that.
We'll come back and we will wrap things up.
We'll have some time if you want to call in 508-996-0500.
And we'll be back in a few moments,
getting ready to give way to Chris McCarthy in South Coast now.
If you're just tuning in wondering where the city council president is,
he is under the weather today.
But he should be back with us next week,
and we will talk with him then.
All right, be back in a few moments.
And the Thanksgiving...
Season is upon us here.
Halloween decorations are out.
We were talking earlier about how, you know,
I had made the comment of, well, now that
Halloween's over, you can start putting out your Christmas decorations.
And everybody was like, what about Thanksgiving?
So I've heard from so many people now that I'm going to acquiesce
and say, it's Thanksgiving
season.
You can go put your Thanksgiving lights out around your house.
You know, you can go put your inflatable turkey,
your seven-foot pilgrim from Home Depot out
there.
You can start decorating for Thanksgiving.
Don't let me get in the way of the Thanksgiving people.
I love Thanksgiving.
Don't get me wrong.
I just don't think it's a big decorative holiday.
That's why I was saying, okay, Halloween's over.
Christmas people have at it.
But if you want to decorate for Thanksgiving, send me your photos.
Send me how you decorate for Thanksgiving on the WBSM app,
or you can email me tim at wbsm.com.
But yes, it is Thanksgiving season, so have at it.
I do not want to forget about one of the most American of holidays
And certainly.
Any holiday that revolves around food,
I'm never going to stand in the way of it.
Except I really don't care about Cinco de Mayo.
I don't like Mexican food that much.
But I do love turkey.
You jumping in?
Remember Destiny Cooper?
She was on the street team here.
That used to work here, yeah.
Yeah.
She said, I'm so ready for Thanksgiving,
my fork is already in my pocket.
There you go.
Is that you, Tim?
No.
I use my fingers.
Kind of me.
Uh, silverware, if I use silverware,
I'll just end up inhaling it by accident.
