Officials in eight Florida counties had
to set up alternative polling sites this morning
in areas where the original sites were damaged by recent flooding
or the roads to get there
were inundated or unsafe to travel.
Heavy rainfall earlier this week across parts of
the state triggered flash flooding.
In DeSoto County, schools are closed today and tomorrow
as officials monitor the potential for flooding
as rainwater from up north enters the Peace River.
Fox 13's Kimberly Cuison spent the day talking
to residents who say they've been
They've been through this before and they're preparing for anything.
Here in DeSoto County
and Arcadia much of the water on the ground has disappeared but right
here at the Peace River the water continues to rise
and this is what residents are keeping an
eye on. Are you concerned with this with what you're seeing now?
No um earlier um yesterday
yes because how how um how the water was rising
and now not so much um it's slowed down quite a
Quite a bit.
I think we're we're gonna be okay. I think.
We hope, right? Yeah, that's all you can. You can't
you can't divert the water, but you could always move from it.
But we've had a lot of people call
and offer their help and stuff,
but I just wanted to keep it on the low key and just, you know,
move a little bit of stuff out instead of a lot.
I mean if we're was talking 25 feet,
We would be getting everything out of here,
except for the storage sheds.
You know, that's replaceable,
but all the personal items would have had to have been moved out.
And back here at the Peace River Campground,
many people have already pulled out and have left.
And the management has
also worked to help people move their RVs if they're being stored here.
Now the management here has gone
through this many times in the past,
and they know what it's like to go
through a flood and they're just
hoping this time will be better.
