Hey everyone, it's Deja from Crochetverafter.com and today I'm going
to show you how to make
a multicolored pom-pom using
the Clover Pom-Pom Maker.
So if you've seen my previous review
and tutorial of the Clover Pom-Pom Maker, this is a bigger
size just so you can see what the package looks like.
In case you want to buy them, you'll know what to look for.
But if you've seen my previous...
Review and tutorial, I found this pom-pom maker to be very easy
and it gave me lots of ideas on how to create
lots of different pom-poms and
Pom-poms and crochet go great together.
You can put them on tops of beanies
on this the
Little strings that hang down from beanies
on the ends of blankets and scarves
Lots of different uses for pom-poms. So I'm going to do a little series
I'm creating different pom-poms
that I've come up with with this machine.
So this is going to be our first,
which is pretty basic, it's a multicolored pom-pom.
This is a two-color.
I'm going to show you how to do a three-color.
So depending on how many colors you want your pom-pom to be,
just substitute with that many.
Okay, so to start getting ready to make your pom-pom,
this machine, it's really easy to work once you figure it out.
It looks kind of strange when you first get it.
It's a two-part machine.
You just stick it together if it's not together for any reason.
And it has arms. It has these arms that come up.
You want the arms to be lined up on both sides.
You see there's four arms, but you're going to be using two at a time.
So you're going to open up one side of your arms.
Grab the yarn you want to make your pom-pom out of. I'm doing pink,
red, and white this time, so you can see a three-color variation.
And what I do is I hold my tails in the hand
that I'm holding my pom-pom maker,
and then I just start at one end, and I start winding.
And I like to keep the yarn lined up.
I find that the pom-pom looks more uniform
and it doesn't take as much cutting to get
it to look even, like an even ball all the way around,
rather than if my yarn is all
twisted up as I wind.
So try to keep your yarn flat as you're winding it around.
It's going to make it nice and twisty down here, but...
The end result is a lot easier to cut and make it look nice at the end.
So, as I've been making these pom-poms,
I've found out that you can stuff this in.
You can get this all the way till
your center part is almost completely flat.
You can see how there's a divot.
You can keep winding this until it's almost completely flat,
because when you put it down here,
you only have a slight bulge where that little bar is.
So keep winding on top of each other once you get to the end,
then come back and wind the other way.
Try to keep your strands nice and flat.
And you'll see that I don't have any specific order
to the color, I'm just putting it in.
Because once I cut it, it's not going to,
it's going to be kind of jumbled everywhere.
So don't neglect your sides.
Once you get all the way over here,
make sure you get all the way up onto the side.
I'm going to do this first side completely with you,
just so you can see how it looks.
It's very twisted, I'm like candy cane down below now,
so just kind of run your fingers
to straighten it out.
Trust me, it's easier to do this part now than
to have to cut for a half hour to get
your bald looking uniform.
And I'm not pulling it super tight,
I'm pulling it tight enough that it's nice and taut.
But I found that either...
Pulling it super, super tight
or pulling it just taut gives the same results.
I'm going to try
to keep this straight.
The other side, we're going to do the exact same thing.
Here, I've got
a frame straightening
my yarn a little.
I need a little bit more room to straighten it out.
So you can see how my divot
is starting to fill up here.
So the more yarn you put,
obviously the poofier your pom-pom will be, so if you don't want
a super thick pom-pom, you don't have to use as much yarn,
but if you want as thick as
possible a pom-pom, then just keep filling it in.
And you can check it,
so you can start winding and make sure that your arms are touching,
so you can close it as you're winding to see if you can fit more.
I like to, um...
When I'm done winding, I like to get my tails back over here where
these other ones are, or along me, or this side.
It kind of just holds better.
Just about
complete here.
Look good.
So I'm going to close this off.
Then I'm going to cut my tails.
Just cut them the same height
as the rest of your pom-pom.
And you can cut these now, or you can
wait until after you tie them off.
I usually wait until after I tie them off.
Then you're just going to open up your arms
and you're going to do the other side the exact same way.
Try to keep the same thickness though because,
see I'm very tangled so I need to untangle myself for
a little bit, but try to keep the same thickness as this one
so that your pom-poms are going to be
uniformly round, otherwise you'll have like one really thick part
and one really thin part.
So you can even count how many times you wrap it as you go,
that can help keep it more uniform.
We're gonna, I'm gonna do this off camera so you don't have
to keep watching it, and then we'll do the next part together.
Okay, I'm just at the end of winding
my other side of my pom-pom.
I cut my tails because they were getting super tangled.
That's one of the downsides of using a couple strands at the same time.
So now I'm going to close off my arms.
And now it's time to cut,
so this is where the sharp scissors come in handy.
Now while I'm cutting, I like to hold my arms down on the opposite end,
just so they don't pop up,
because when you cut this,
now you're going to have loose strands of yarn
that are only being held together by these arms.
If the arms pop open, your strands will shift,
and your pom-pom will be lopsided, or you could lose it altogether.
Um, it's not too, like, if you hold it and shake it,
it's not going to open up, so it's in there pretty good,
but you don't want to accidentally hit your arm and open it up,
so that's why I'm holding it down.
Now, depending on how thick you, um, made this,
you might have to cut a couple times in the same spot.
You can see that sharp scissors are a must,
so I have these nice, sharp, pointy scissors.
Buy a pair if you plan on making lots of pom-poms,
because you really need just the tips to be really sharp.
So you see that I cut all the way through
with this center divot to separate my pom-pom.
Another important thing to remember,
don't do this if you're wearing black.
For some reason, all the little fuzzies will stick to your clothes,
and you'll see a bunch of fuzzies
on the bottom right here when I'm done.
So make sure, unless you have a lint roller with you,
do this over a trash can.
So I'm going to do the other side.
I'm going to hold down my arms again and cut,
and we are almost done.
You can use either thread or a piece of yarn for this next step.
I'm just going to use
a piece of yarn from the same color that I'm using.
So I'm just going to use a white piece of
yarn. So grab a length of white yarn or whatever yarn you want.
Okay and then you're going to use
this yarn to tie off your pom pom.
So you're going to go back into that divot that you just
cut and place your yarn in it
and then you're going to double knot your yarn.
Remember, the only thing that's in the center holding
this pom pom maker together is that
little skinny piece of metal, I'll show you when I take it apart.
So that's going, you're going to tie
your knot all the way to that little metal piece
and your pom pom maker is going to separate,
as you can see, as I make my knot.
Tighten that and then I'm going to do,
don't tighten too tight because I've broken yarn
a few times trying to tighten it too tight,
so make it just tight enough that it's going to hold
So then I tighten it down, and now I'm going to cut these two close
so that they don't poke out too far.
You can leave those long if you're going
to attach your pom-pom with that.
So leave it long if you're going to use this to tie it to something.
If you're not, go ahead and just cut them short.
As you can see, I'm already getting lots of fuzz down here
and I'm going to get some even more when I start taking this apart.
So first I'm going to cut all of these little tails the same size
as my pom-poms so I don't have to do it after I take it apart.
It helps with it. So just pull it out a little bit to the same size
and cut them right in line.
Make sure you do this over the trash can, this next part,
because this is where all the fuzzies come.
Open up your one side, so pull your arms,
and kind of fluff it like this.
Just do this to get all
those fuzzies off before you start using it for your project.
That way it's pretty clean.
You don't even need to roll a lint roller over it.
You can see all the fuzzies that are coming off.
So do that to both sides.
It's kind of just easier
to do it now before you totally take apart your pom-pom.
Then, once your arms are open,
you're just going to grab your sides and pull them apart.
So there's that little metal bar I was talking about.
And then I just kind of rub this in my hands
to get it back into the circular shape
because it's kind of squished in half
when you take it out of the machine.
And you can see that the Pom Pom Maker,
I have almost like a perfect circle.
I just have to probably clean up a few ends,
little pieces that stick out.
So you just take your scissors and kind of...
Give it a little trim job as you're going around in your circle,
pieces that are sticking
up a little bit higher than the rest,
and your pom-pom is done.
So that is the multicolored pom-pom.
This is the three color.
You can do two colors, you can do even more,
so if you have the Clover Pom Pom Maker and
you have any questions or comments about it,
any tips and tricks, we would love to hear
them below.
And check back for more pom pom tutorials
because I have quite a few that I am going
to be making, including some really neat geometrical ones,
so check back for that.
But thanks for watching!
