Ukrainian deep strikes are becoming more effective every year. A telling example: Russian S-400 radars are being destroyed faster than Russia can produce new ones. This could ultimately lead to a critical shortage of radars in the Russian army, according to Taras Chmut, head of the "Come Back Alive" foundation, in an interview with "Militarny . " In this interview, he also highlighted the difficulties of using F-16s against Russian aircraft that launch guided bombs. According to him, Ukrainian fighter jets have been lost in such encounters on numerous occasions. The key problem is that Russia has air-to-air missiles with a range of up to 300 km, and some S-400 variants can be guided by a fighter's radar, making F-16 missions extremely dangerous. Chmut believes that French Mirage and Swedish Gripen aircraft with long-range missiles could strengthen Ukrainian aviation. However, much depends on the number of aircraft and the actual characteristics of their ammunition.
Every few weeks brings another strike on Russia’s premier air defense system, and every few weeks the same dismissal: Russia builds S-400s faster than anyone can destroy them. That is true of exactly one part of the system — the launchers, which are trucks with tubes. The radars that let each battalion see cost up to $60 million apiece, depend on strained electronics lines, and are so scarce Russia’s own customers have waited years. Blind launchers are just parked missiles.
An S-400 battalion is not a missile; it is an organism, one whose full architecture this site has mapped before. The standard formation pairs a command post with a layered radar suite: a 91N6 long-range acquisition radar, surveillance sets of the 96L6 family, and several 92N6 engagement radars, all feeding eight to twelve launchers that cannot guide a missile without them. The launchers are the most numerous and least sophisticated nodes in that chain.
The radars are the reverse: Ukrainian assessments describe the 92N6 as “the most valuable single component” of the whole system, because without it, the battery is blind. The commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert Brovdi, calls it an “air defense reduction campaign” — destroying the systems that let Russia see and shoot before Ukrainian drones and missiles arrive. Russia’s launcher production genuinely is large, and the system’s reputation as one of the world’s premier air defenses was not invented.
