She is the first black female governor
in the history of the United States.
The Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms won
the race for governor in the state of Georgia on Tuesday
as part of the midterm elections.
Her win not only makes her the first black woman in this top position,
but also helped return Georgia's
governor's office to Democratic control
after more than two decades of being Republican.
We'll be right back.
Bottoms defeated the billionaire healthcare executive Rick Jackson,
who ran for the Republican Party.
Jackson spent more than $100 million of his own fortune on the campaign
and was also endorsed by President Donald Trump earlier this year.
Bottoms, who previously served as mayor of the city of Atlanta,
ran for the office of governor on promises
that notably include the expansion of Medicaid,
lower costs for families, and the protection of voting rights.
The state of Georgia also returned under Democratic control
for the Senate, with voting projections showing
that Senator John Ossoff won re-election on Tuesday.
