Hi guys, Assalamualaikum. Welcome back to our channel.
Thank you guys for watching our videos.
Make sure to like, share and subscribe.
Now we are in Taksim and we are walking around the area.
So right now we are in Taksim and we are going
to be heading towards Taksim Square and the Istiqlal Street.
Taksim also opens 24 hours.
It opens even until 1 or 2 in the evening.
So it's like Taksim Square is like open 24-7 like it's
a beautiful nightlife there and
even
the
shops
are
open
till
1
and
2
a.m.
Let's
go!
Now we have arrived in Istiklal Street.
Istiklal Avenue or Istiklal Street is one
of the most famous avenues in Istanbul, Turkey.
Visited by the medieval Genoese neighbourhood around Galata Tower
and ultimately leads up to Taksim Square.
Galata Square is located
at approximately
the centre of the avenue
and is home to the oldest
secondary school in Istanbul.
And this is Galata Tower we mentioned before in the previous video.
The famous Çiçek Pasajı is a covered arcade with rows of historic cafes
and restaurants.
This is located in the center of Istiklal Street.
Çiçek Pasajı also means flower passage.
In 1908, it was called Said Pasa Pasaji
because the building was bought by Wazir Agung Said Pasa.
In the early 1920s, this hall welcomed white women.
White-skinned women are from Russia who sell flowers.
They are Russian citizens
who were alienated from Russia after the Russian Revolution in 1917.
In 1940, the building was mostly occupied by flower shops,
and to this day, the building is called Cicek Pasaji.
This stairway was built between 1870 and 1880
and was financed by the banker Abraham
Kamando in order to facilitate the transport
of his children to their school.
This staircase is a fascinating piece of architecture
that I highly recommend visiting if you are
in this area.
This is Kamando Stairs.
This is a beautiful highway
that was taken from one of the most remote hills in Istanbul.
This is Abraham Salomon Kamando
from the Kamando Yehudi Sephardic family
who is rich in wealth,
funding this development.
He wants to build a bank
and the success of his grandmother's business
and then become the main banker
for the Ottoman Empire
in the Galata District
where this ladder is located.
Now we have arrived in the Arab Mosque.
Arab Mosque is located in Galata.
Arab Mosque is the only mosque in Istanbul
that was converted from a Roman Catholic church.
Originally it was built in the 14th century
and its name was the Church of San Domenico
since it was commissioned by the Dominican monks.
There are 10 of the Byzantine Orthodox churches
in Istanbul that were converted into mosques
Such as Hagia Sophia, Chora Museum and Zyriac Mosque.
However, Arab Mosque is the only Roman Catholic church converted
into a mosque in the city of Istanbul.
Before the construction of the church,
there was a small chapel built during the Latin occupation
of Constantinople and dedicated to St. Paul.
In the first half of the 14th century,
the small chapel was expanded and became a church with the name of
The Church of San Domenico. The church functioned until
the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453.
After the conquest of Constantinople, the church was converted
into a mosque and its name was Galata Mosque, Galata Cami.
However, at the end of the 15th century,
Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II settled Andalusian Arabs who were deported
from Spain during the Spanish Inquisition around the mosque.
Therefore, the mosque began to be known as the Arab Mosque.
After the Great Galata Fire in 1731, the mosque was partly damaged
and during the restoration of the mosque, some Gothic...
architectural elements were replaced
with Ottoman architectural elements accordingly our
mosque is a unique structure containing both Italian Gothic
and Ottoman architectural features
Today, the structure is in good condition and functioning as a mosque.
Because of the work of the Dominicans, there are dozens of Orthodox
Byzantine churches in Istanbul that have been transformed into mosques,
such as Hagia Sophia, Museum Kora, and Masjid Jeyrek.
However, the Arab Mosque is the only Roman Catholic church
that has been transformed into a mosque in Istanbul.
At the end of the 15th century, Sultan Usmaniyah Bayezid II
placed the Arabs in Andalusia who were deported from Spain
during the Spanish Inquisition around the mosque.
Therefore, the mosque began to be known as the Arab Mosque.
After the Great Galata Fire in 1731,
some mosques were destroyed and during the construction of the mosque,
Several Gothic architecture elements
were replaced with Ottoman architecture elements.
Therefore, the Arab mosque is a unique structure that contains
the features of the Gothic architecture of Italy and the Ottomans.
Currently, the building is in good condition and functions as a mosque.
There are many other interesting places that you can come and see around
Istanbul, besides the Galata Tower and the famous Istiklal Street.
