What they said was impossible.
Together, Iowa, we have proven that the impossible was possible.
And as we said in the primary,
and I'll say it again, Iowa,
you sure do love an underdog.
After 448 days
of hard work.
Pushing up hills, knocking doors, visiting all 99 counties,
visiting small and mid-sized communities all across this state,
and preaching the message of a better future for Iowa.
Together, we have made history.
For the first time in 20 years,
Iowa will have representation
in the United States Senate for the people of Iowa.
As I have said all along, my story is truly the American dream.
Only in America could someone born
into a working-class family in Council Bluffs, Iowa,
who went through the economic
and healthcare struggle that I went through,
ultimately be able to represent my country in four Paralympic games,
win two gold medals,
represent my community in the Iowa legislature,
and as of tonight, be elected to represent the
state I was born and raised in in the United States Senate.
Only in America is this possible.
And as your next United States Senator, Iowa,
I promise to protect the American dream for future generations.
I just got off the phone with Ashley Henson
and commended her on running a strong campaign.
Campaigns, they are brutal.
I wish her and her family all the best.
I have deep respect for anyone who steps up to run.
Yeah, it's worth it.
Give her a clap.
I appreciate her service to Iowa for the last few years.
Our campaign finance system is broken.
And nasty campaign commercials bought
by billionaires trying to buy off our elections make it
even worse.
But tonight, Iowa,
we outvoted the billionaires.
We outworked the corporate PACs.
And we told every single corrupt
politician enough is enough.
Here's my promise to each and every one of you.
First and foremost, in the United States Senate,
I will fight to end this war in Iran.
I will fight to end these chaotic tariffs
because they are decimating markets, killing
farmers and hurting our rural communities.
I'm going to the U.S. Senate to fight for a livable wage
because $7.25 is not a livable
wage for Iowans.
I'm going to the Senate to fight for affordable housing,
to drive private equity out of housing,
out of health care and out of nursing homes.
I'm going up there to fight for affordable
and accessible health care because I believe
I believe that health care is a human right.
And a part of that human right is also women's reproductive freedom.
I'm also going up to the US Senate to fight for affordable
and accessible prescription drugs
because far too often as I've traveled this state,
I've heard over and over, this month,
it's either taking my pills or paying my bills.
That is wrong in the richest country on earth.
And I'm going to the U.S. Senate to fight for our public schools,
because I believe public money belongs in our public schools.
I am going up to the United States Senate to pass a farm bill,
and a farm bill for small family farmers in rural communities,
not just big ag.
And I am going to fight and address the cancer crisis,
because it is wrong that Iowa leads
the nation in cancer.
And I'm going to fight to address the root cause
of that cancer crisis, which is our
water quality crisis.
Every Iowan deserves, when they turn on their tap,
to ensure that their water is not giving
them cancer.
And maybe most importantly, I am going up to D.C. to end
the corruption that we are seeing on both sides of the aisle.
We need to have campaign finance reform.
And I am going to D.C. to overturn Citizens United.
Because in Iowa, Elon Musk does
not decide our elections.
Iowans do. And we proved it tonight.
I also want to fight for ethics reforms,
term limits, banning members of Congress
from owning and trading stocks.
And I want to pass a bill to mandate members of Congress
to have at least one in-person town hall annually
because members of Congress should be accountable
to the people, to the constituents,
not just to their donors and lobbyists. This is what I'm going
to the United States Senate to fight for all of you.
15 months ago, we launched this campaign.
Because we believe that Iowa deserved representation in the Senate.
A senator who works for the people of Iowa.
So we began our push for change.
The beginning of this, they said we were crazy.
They said winning a state that Trump had won
by 13 points was impossible.
That running against someone like Ashley Hinson
with her corporate PAC friends and super PAC allies was impossible.
But I've heard the impossible my whole life.
Doctors told me and my parents it was impossible for me
to live a fulfilled life after I was born with spina bifida.
Proved them wrong then.
They told me it was impossible to win gold medals after I
was cut from the U.S. national team six straight times.
Proved them wrong then.
They told me it was impossible to win my western Iowa district
as a Democrat when we proved them wrong then.
And they told me it was impossible to win this Senate race.
But tonight, Iowa, we have once again proved
that the impossible is possible.
Spent the last 448 days crisscrossing this beautiful state,
going to all 99 counties, urban areas, rural areas,
NASCAR tracks, country fairs, RAGBRAI,
tailgates, small family farms, health clinics,
rural pharmacies, meeting people wherever they are.
And wherever I went, I heard the same thing.
They would say, Josh, I'm struggling just to keep food on the table,
keep a roof above my head, pay my electric bill.
And with this war in Iran, I'm struggling just to keep gas in my tank.
Over those 448 days, I heard a lot of hurting,
but I also heard a lot of hope.
Hope that change was coming,
hope that we'd find our way back to the Iowa I grew up in,
where you could afford to go to your doctor,
and where you were proud to send your kids
to some of the nation's best public schools.
Tonight we have done it. All along I have said
that Iowa was the center of the political universe
and man did we prove that true tonight.
Not only our victory here tonight, but Rob's victory,
Sarah's victory, Lindsay's victory, Christina's victory.
That has been made crystal clear.
We have changed the state of Iowa tonight.
Rob Sand is going to be a tremendous governor.
He will undo the privatization of Medicaid
and strengthen our public schools
so every Iowan has the opportunity to receive
a world-class education right here in Iowa.
And I am so excited to join these three amazing women,
Lindsay, Christina, and Sarah.
They will be excellent representation
who will fight for the people of Iowa.
And I look forward to serving alongside
these amazing women to fight for Iowans.
So now, Iowa, let us be the city on a hill,
the Iowa that we grew up in, that was the envy of the nation,
We're a mom and a dad.
Don't have to work two to three jobs just
to keep food on the table and gas in the tank.
Where our farmers can afford to keep working
the land their grandfathers did.
And where every Iowa child has access to world-class education.
Where we fix our broken health care system.
So where you live doesn't determine if you live.
Where our young people want to and can afford to stay in Iowa.
Have a family, buy a house, and start a life.
Iowa, this is where
our comeback begins.
Let us do it together, like what Abraham Lincoln said,
guided by the better angels of our nature,
and do what is right for Iowa and Iowans.
Whether you voted for me today or not,
I will always fight for Iowa and Iowans, and I pledge
to be a senator for all of you, regardless of political affiliation.
My political North Star has always been about what
is best for the people, not about party.
What is best for our working families,
our small family farms and our small businesses.
And I will always be accountable to you, the people.
