Crystal Waters is bringing I Am House
orchestrated back to Palladium Times Square
for a special one-year anniversary celebration.
The show brings together some of the biggest names in house music,
performing their biggest hits with
a 30-piece orchestra. Here to just give us
a little sneak peek with a few of those instruments,
please welcome friend of the show,
Crystal Waters, performing her classic hit,
Gypsy Woman.
Without a...
Nice to have you here.
Oh, my goodness.
You know what?
Having, like, you know, a semi-orchestra,
because you're going to have, what, 30 pieces?
Yeah, it's going to be a lot of us up there.
Lots of strings.
But even with this beautiful group here,
thank you so much.
Yeah, it's kind of like Gypsy Unplugged.
It is, it is.
I love it.
So what's the story, the genesis behind this event?
I am house orchestrated.
Well, we've taken all the classic dance songs,
we've put them to an orchestra, we've orchestrated it.
It kind of elevates all the music.
And it's really, I've done it for the community,
the people who love house music, who love these songs.
It's just another experience for them to come out.
And I wanted to have all the original singers, too.
Like?
Like CeCe Peniston, Anaya Day, Dwayne Harden.
Barbara Tucker, and we've added some special guests this year.
We have Deborah Cox and Billy Porter.
Oh, my goodness.
So you know they're going to sing.
This is going to be so much fun.
Yeah.
And it's one night only, right?
One night only, yes.
Are there a few more tickets left?
There are a few more, but hurry up.
You can get them on my website at IamCrystalWaters.com.
Crystal, I'm telling you, you know, everybody, you were warming up
the whole day and, like, the whole morning, and everybody's dancing.
You got our staff in a happy mood.
They're always great.
So, I mean, I was thinking, like, Gypsy Woman,
I mean, we're all kind of dancing to Gypsy Woman.
It's about a homeless woman.
Yeah.
You know, what was the back story on that?
The back story was that I was writing a song, and I had la-da-dee,
la-da-da, and I couldn't figure out any words that fit that short.
So I thought about a woman that was standing in Washington,
D.C., full face of makeup, fully dressed,
looked very nice, singing for money.
But I had a bad attitude, and I was like,
oh, she just needs to go get a job, da-da-da-da-da.
And then the local paper did a story about her
and told how she lost everything in a matter of days,
like her house, her job, everything.
And it changed my whole perspective on homelessness,
how it could happen to you or me.
And the thing that stuck with me was that she said
the reason why she wore the makeup and looked so nice
was because she felt she should be respectable,
especially if she's going to ask you for money.
So that just kind of stuck with me.
So the first line of the song is,
she wakes up early every morning just to do her hair.
What a beautiful, beautiful story.
Crystal, always great to see you.
Thank you for getting up early.
Thank you to your beautiful band for getting up early for us, too.
