Breaking news. We begin tonight with a pursuit.
LAPD involved in this one. Word is it's a stolen car.
We are watching here the location of Fifth Street
and Maple Avenue in downtown LA.
Not sure why we don't see any police vehicles behind this car.
Obviously, you see a helicopter with a night sun overhead.
Oftentimes, police will pull back if they feel it's too dangerous.
There you go. There's a police car.
Right there, coming around the corner,
watching this driver here in a downtown area.
I'm not sure if the driver is familiar with the area or not
because there are a lot...
Oh, wow, passing a police car.
In the opposite direction. Oh, one way. That was my fear right there.
This is a one way direction street here.
And this car is going the wrong way. That was my question.
That was my fear. You can see other cars right there.
Okay. Wow. Dangerous pursuit right there.
We can tell you that. Oh my goodness. Still the wrong way.
Cars oncoming right there, fifth in downtown Los Angeles and Maine.
Oh my goodness, that just goes to show you how scary this pursuit is.
If you know the downtown area,
you know there are some in two directions
and some streets in one direction, and this is a one-direction street.
Oh, the driver not turning to get off
when they could turn down a different street.
Oncoming cars right there must be terrifying for each
and every one of them to see a car
flying down the road the wrong way towards them.
No wonder you don't have police right there on
the tail because it's a dangerous pursuit.
We bring in our police specialist, Tim Lin.
As you watch this one, Tim, a reminder of how scary this one is.
Yeah, it is.
On these small streets in the downtown area, downtown Los Angeles,
very little visibility for cross traffic.
So coming down a road where you're the wrong way,
people aren't expecting you to be coming
that way, pull out in front of you.
So pedestrians as well, it's very tight streets.
So when he comes up to intersections like this,
it just really is tough on the drivers in that neighborhood.
So the subject's been driving very rapidly.
Rapidly on the freeway, wrong ways,
and rapidly through the downtown area.
And if it keeps up like this, it could end very, very badly.
But as you can see, the problem here with these big buildings,
with the area, it looks like they're trying to pit right here.
It looks like they spun them around.
Go ahead.
Okay, you see LAPD guy trying to back away.
Now, they did spin him around at this point, but it's backing away.
So hopefully we get another unit to come in and block.
But right now, it looks like he got away from that one
and they're going to have to stick with it down, try that pit again.
So LAPD being very aggressive with this vehicle right now.
We have not confirmed the want on this driver
and exactly what is his issue here running through the area
of downtown now on Olympic coming away from Maine.
So he's starting to move out of the southern edge of the downtown area
and hopefully out of the buildings.
But you see just making those sharp turns around these streets.
A lot of folks that will be out.
As he gets a little bit further to the east,
but right now just making the turns around the streets of those.
So you see we're head on right there with the unit
as he turned here on 9th Street, now crossing Main.
So the LAPD is going to surround this area
and try to contain him within these streets.
So hopefully they can cut down the threat
of any other motorists on the road
because it's very dangerous to drive
at any rate of speed on these streets.
Tim, as we're looking at this wide shot
of our beautiful downtown with all of its buildings
there, we do lose the shot from time to time.
We do know the police helicopter overhead with
it's night sun as well, helping out to track this one for us.
Oh my goodness. It's painful to watch
this as the driver goes in the wrong lanes,
flying at these speeds in downtown LA. Luckily at this
This hour, not a ton of traffic, but still enough to be concerning.
Okay, LAPD, not...
Choosing to follow the car down this direction,
like you said, maybe they're going to try
to find another way to box off this driver.
Again, is this another one of the one-way streets?
Yes, that's why they didn't follow him down that street
because it was a one-way, so they're
not going to go down.
So now back on to.
Olive here as he continues through the area of 6th Street,
coming back up into the downtown, you see the area,
the units that were chasing now are back with him,
with the driver as he continues here going north on Olive,
coming up to the intersection here, making that turn out to the west.
Okay, again here.
See, again, one-way street again.
Right.
Going the wrong way on a one-way street.
Well, you know, we're looking at Grand Avenue now,
which can be a little bit busier.
There are some hotels in that area that could have much more traffic.
And also we note at this hour at night, 10 o'clock at night in L.A.,
you have your homeless population down there,
which could mean people on the streets.
Not sure if tonight's such a hotspot night
for people to be out walking around,
going to restaurants and bars, but it looks fairly quiet.
A beautiful downtown with the high-rises there,
but very scary to see this driver.
Going down these one-way streets,
and police, we know, Tim, you know as well,
that LAPD has the police headquarters there in downtown L.A.
Those officers know those streets very well.
Yeah, the Central Division officers
do know the downtown area very well.
It's a very congested, very tight area.
So as you see right now, Sky Fox is having
a real hard time staying with the pursuit.
But I guarantee you that LAPD area
is all right over the top of this pursuit.
And the news media have to hold back a little bit
to give you room to get around these buildings.
Because some of these buildings go up as high as 1,400 feet.
So they have to have a little bit of a buffer.
And just above downtown L.A. is the LAX restricted airspace,
so they can't go much over 2,500 feet over downtown.
So it kind of compresses all the helicopters together.
So the best bet is what Skyfox is doing here is kind of stay wide,
let the police helicopter do their thing,
and just try to pick up this pursuit
as it goes down one of these east-west streets.
But right now it looks like we're still just looking for the pursuit.
I'm sure the...
The camera operator on here using the maps to try
to figure out exactly where this pursuit's at
and try to pick it off as it goes between the buildings.
But the LAPD will just surround this area with units
and try to get as many units in the area so they can seal it off
because they won't chase him down.
I found a...
Looks like we might get him going across through
the 3rd Street Bridge here, but anyway,
so they'll try to keep it contained so they don't have
to chase him down those one-way streets, putting more people in peril.
Right now, they'll just let him run
and try to pick him up as he comes through the different intersections.
This is what LAPD, working this area, they know it very well,
and their training and experience doing these pursuits
was what makes them usually turn out very successful,
along with that air unit overhead
and the tactical flight officer giving directions and speeds
of that vehicle to help the ground officer stay oriented where he is.
But it's a very difficult position for that task force,
for the tactical flight officer,
as well as those officers on the ground driving the black and whites.
The responsibility for them is to protect themselves and also protect
the motoring public as they try to apprehend this vehicle.
But you do see that the way he was driving,
he was very aware that he's trying his best to get away,
throwing caution to the wind, zipping through these downtown areas.
But we've seen this before, and you see how the LAPD area,
they're just weaving through the buildings,
staying as best he can over the vehicle.
And that tactical flight officer keeping an eye on the vehicle,
calling out that direction.
So a very strenuous job for the folks in the helicopter,
as well as those officers on the ground in the black and whites.
All right, Tim, we're going to...
Leave you right here with this look of downtown L.A. with all
of its lights and all of its high rises
because Sky Fox have a little trouble right now trying
to locate that pursuit due to these structures there.
We're going to keep a watch on this and have it in a small box
on the screen while we bring our viewers some other news here
and pick it back up as we need to.
So we do want to tell our viewers about.
This breaking news, which started as a pursuit in Jurupa Valley,
ends at the border with Mexico near San Diego.
Just before 7 tonight,
deputies located a suspect wanted for grand theft auto.
Deputies tried to stop the suspect, but he fled.
Pursuit continued through Jurupa Valley, continued on to Interstate 15,
into San Diego County, where it finally ended
with assistance from the Riverside Sheriff's Aviation
and K9 Unit near the United States border.
A suspect was taken into custody.
It was an active and ongoing investigation.
And we have a live look at the border.
The white car closest to the red car is the one that was stopped.
Imagine the backup there with all the police activity.
As, there you go, there you go,
as people are trying to get through the border,
going about their daily business, and then you have this happen.
And we've talked about pursuits where they have a stolen vehicle,
and if they try to get them out of the country
and into Mexico, that car could be gone.
All right, so there you go.
Let's talk now elections.
Again, a live look at the L.A. County Voting Operations
Center where workers are processing ballots around
the clock until every single vote is counted.
The latest numbers suggest a growing challenge
for incumbent mayor Karen Bass.
As challenger Nithya Raman has surged into the lead.
We want to show you the numbers out tonight.
They did a count around 4.30
this afternoon where they had new ballots come in.
The numbers here, 72% of the precincts reporting.
Nithya Raman out ahead at 52%.
Karen Bass at 48%.
Another drop expected, I believe,
in the morning and then again tomorrow afternoon.
So workers, they're there.
They're processing those ballots, the numbers coming in.
And as we said, suggesting a problem there tonight
for Mayor Karen Bass, the incumbent.
We'll go live to Fox 11's Ed Laskos in the City of Industry.
The votes are being counted.
And Christine, you're right about that.
The next voter drop really expected around nine o'clock.
First thing in the morning, Joe, into the story we go.
That's because this is the night shift here
at the ballot processing center in all of L.A. County.
Look at all of these folks,
hundreds of them as this room stretches out.
They are opening the ballots that are coming in, processing them,
verifying them and counting all of these ballots is all attention,
all eyes seemingly on the battle for control of L.A. City Hall. Watch.
The night after the election and the votes are still coming in,
the latest drop, some 42,000 ballots, showing about 60% of those going
for Nithya Raman as the city councilwoman slightly increases
her lead over Mayor Karen Bass.
As time would go on in Los Angeles, we've seen
that the later votes tend to be cast by younger, more liberal voters.
So we have anticipated that Nithya Raman, as these votes go on,
they would increase, as you just referenced.
So while we wait for the results to come in.
Those latest results widening Raman's lead by some three points
and fueling her growing confidence
from those who've been talking to her.
We've spoken a couple of times
and I'm excited about how she's prioritizing what she wants to do.
I'm excited about just hearing her joyful energy
and just she's already ready to dig in and get to
work. There are still some 380,000 ballots to be counted in.
We're still not sure just how
many of those involve the race for LA mayor. I will never.
Stop believing in the extraordinary possibilities of my city.
But with this latest vote drop, those possibilities seem
to be slipping away, as is the path for victory.
Largely has not been what we had identified
or as the campaign had identified as her base.
So I think it is concerning.
Concern from Bass supporters.
Now you're looking live, a night shift counting up these ballots
that will get a look at the next ballot voter drop
that is due 9 o'clock in the morning.
And interestingly, we'll see if this trend continues
of Nithya Raman picking up these late votes
and slowly widening her lead over Mayor Karen Bass.
For now, we're live here, City of Industry.
Back to the west side we go.
All right, Ed, thank you.
Developing tonight, three people arrested in Beverly Hills
following reckless driving and dangerous motorcycle stunts.
Fox 11's Laura Diaz live in Beverly Hills
with how police tracked down the suspects.
Yes, Christine, the holiday lights
are starting to go up here in Beverly Hills.
In fact, as we look off here to my left, you can see it's already begun.
And that means that shoppers will be on these busy streets.
So imagine guys on motorcycles driving crazy through
the streets before police throw the cuffs on them.
It happened about a month ago.
We've got the video and the warning.
Racing down the street, doing wheelies,
disobeying the law, disobeying the rules of the road
is definitely a danger to themselves and a danger to the community.
I mean, Beverly Hills is a very heavily trafficked area.
It was a beautiful day out there.
So them going out there and doing that stuff is really dangerous.
This video shows the group of motorcyclists turning
the tony streets of Beverly Hills
into their own stunt scene.
But they weren't stuntmen.
They're young people from overseas looking for clicks on social media.
That, according to Beverly Hills.
Beverly Hills Police supplied this video to Fox 11,
which shows the group of motorcyclists driving on the wrong side
of the road, spinning wheelies and speeding right through stop signs.
It was a little before 7 p.m. September 25th.
Beverly Hills Police Chief says a combination
of old fashioned police work and modern technology.
Caught the group.
We're using technology to our benefit.
So we saw the action happen, we saw what occurred,
and we waited for the opportune time
to take them into custody.
Cameras are all over this glamorous city, keeping an eye out.
Drones dispatched from this center are flying high above the city,
and they've been critical to police work.
People we talked to Wednesday offered opinions
on whether street stunts are actually dangerous.
Because there's a lot of elderly people.
Okay, so you think it is a public safety issue?
Absolutely.
I don't necessarily think it's a public safety issue.
It's not like, you know...
Not necessarily condoning it, but at the same time, I don't think
that it's something that they're going to be doing every day,
especially in this neighborhood, Beverly Hills.
The cops are always around.
The suspects are due in court next month.
They will be charged with reckless driving.
The suspects in this case are in their 20s, one minor.
This is probably not the Hollywood ending
they had in mind. Laura Diaz reporting live from Beverly Hills,
sending it back to the studio.
We are back to that breaking news in downtown
LA where we've been following a pursuit. We're not
sure how it may have ended,
but you have fire department there on scene, LAPD officers on scene
out of their vehicles.
I don't really have a better update for you all, but to tell you that
we've been following this pursuit of a stolen car,
extremely dangerous pursuit, the driver going the
wrong direction flying down the streets
of downtown L.A. because of the high-rises.
We had to pull back from the pursuit.
Producer, go ahead, please.
All right, so what we're hearing is that there
was some kind of accident that ended this.
Is that involving an LAPD car?
Looks like the airbags might have gone off on that one.
All right, we'll try to get more information for you.
In the meantime, we go to Cal Kraska Sports.
Christine, thank you.
And hi, everybody.
We've got lots of sports lined up for you,
including highlights of the Lakers and the Clippers.
But first, we've got your poll question of the night.
Here it is.
Who will win the NBA MVP award this season?
These are your choices.
They are the favorites right now.
Luka Doncic, Victor Wembanyama, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, or Nikola Jokic?
Let us know what you think.
Go to foxla.com slash vote.
It's unfortunately covered up here by our lower third,
but foxla.com slash vote.
You can, there it is.
You can weigh in.
We'll have the results of the poll and we'll have your sports next.

All right, the NBA back at it tonight after taking election night off.
The Lakers on the road up in California's capital of Sacramento,
taking on the one-win Kings.
Purple and gold entering the night, 6-2 on the young season,
largely thanks, of course, to Luka Doncic,
who scored 40-plus points in four of his last five games.
Lakers looking for their third straight win.
We'll pick this one up in the third quarter.
Lakers already up 11 here.
Luka creating a little space, top of the key,
knocks down the deep ball, part of his...
40-point outing of 85-71 now in the final seconds of the third.
Doncic with a half-court volley to Walker Kessler in the paint.
Easy bucket for the big man.
Seven assists on the night to go along with a 40-piece for Luka.
Lakers trying to put it away now in the fourth.
Austin Reeves, he'll feed Kessler, who finishes with the flush.
15 points for Kessler.
The Lakers handle the Kings, 116-103.
Meanwhile, the Clippers hosting the Heat in Inglewood.
This one went right down to the wire.
Clippers trailing 107-106 with under 10 seconds to go.
Rui Hachimura drives into the paint, looking for the go-ahead bucket.
He is fouled.
Miami would challenge and fail, but Rui would only make one free throw,
so that ties the game at 107.
Heat have a chance to end it in regulation.
Bam Adebayo puts the shot up.
Off the rim, so this one heads into overtime.
Klay Thompson just hit a game-winning three
at the buzzer, the Heat win in overtime.
117 to 160.
Ouch.
All right, on the gridiron,
the Rams getting both good news and some bad news today.
Corner Jalen Watson will miss the remainder of the season
as he's expected to undergo shoulder surgery
after sustaining that injury in Sunday's win against the Chargers.
On a positive note, Miles Garrett
and tight end Terrence Ferguson opened up their practice windows today
as they each work on a return from the injured reserve.
Sean McVay leaving open the possibility for Garrett
to play against the Commanders this weekend,
which says there's no rush, despite him being out since week one.
I think we've tried to be as diligent, as thorough,
and as, you know, I don't want to say like cautious.
You're always cautious, but to answer your question, yes.
You know, we're not just going to, it's
about that return to performance,
and a lot of it's going to be predicated
on his communication and feedback to us,
and then ultimately, you know, being able to see that, you know,
hopefully the expectation is he's ready to rock this week.
All right, we hope so, Coach.
Finally, on the ice, Kings hosting the Sharks.
Home squad wasting no time getting to business.
Opening minutes, Adrian Kempe snapping
the puck past Yaroslav Askarov for the goal.
His first of the period, and the Kings were just getting warmed up.
Leading 4-1 now in the second period.
LA on a power play, and again, it's Kempe, his third goal of the game.
Yep, the hat trick, much to the crowd's delight.
The Kings dominate the Sharks.
There they are, 7-2.
Was the final there?
All right, let's take a look at the poll.
Asked you earlier who will win the NBA MVP award this season.
Yeah, Luka, 54%.
Thanks for playing along.
We'll be right back, LA.
Entertainment is sponsored by Yamaha Resort and Casino.
Topping entertainment.
He wrote the classic song, Knockin' on Heaven's Door.
Knock, knock, knock.
Today, rock legend Bob Dylan met privately with Pope Leo XIV
at the Vatican during a break in his Italian tour.
Dylan gave the Pope a signed copy of his autobiography.
The Pope gave Dylan a rosary.
Pope Leo quoted Dylan's unpublished 1963 anti-nuclear protest song,
Go Away, You Bomb.
The Pope used Dylan's words to warn about
the dangers of the global arms race.
That's it for us tonight. West Coast Rap is next.
Good Day LA starts at 5 a.m. Have a good night.
