Busy 24 hours for employees of Citibank's massive complex,
and what a difference a day makes.
Following that deadly shooting yesterday that prompted
a massive law enforcement response and evacuation,
we've been in close contact with the sheriff's office
and the community.
As many people returned to that campus today,
many had to abandon their cars and belongings there yesterday
as deputies went room by room confirming there was no longer a threat.
Sadly, one woman was killed before a security guard,
who we've learned is a Marine, managed to stop the gunman.
And deputies say he drove his vehicle on
On to the campus when he opened fire
on workers during their lunch break.
It has no doubt left more than 3,000 employees
at that complex pretty shaken.
Let's bring in our Fox 5 crews here now.
I have an axle bank staying on top of the law
enforcement investigation response.
Aaron Mesmer has been reaching out to those who went through
that absolute nightmare yesterday.
Evan, we want to start with you.
We know that you actually got an update from the Hillsborough Sheriff,
Chad Chronister, a little bit earlier.
So where do things stand with the investigation?
Security teams were just.
Yeah, you're right. Security teams are just getting
or were just getting into place the moment
that this shooting started simultaneously.
Take a look in video of the incident.
You can see 35 year old Jacob Pearson rammed through
the gate in his car. He then uses his assault rifle to shoot
the first person he encountered, which was 41 year old Leanne Selman.
She was eating lunch in the courtyard.
The sheriff said wrong place, wrong time. Sheriff's deputies say
a threat was made at 9 a.m. to a lawyer's office by phone.
That was handling a $2,500 collections case against Jacob Pearson.
Court records show that it was related
to a Best Buy credit card that had not been paid back.
Law enforcement in Orange County checked his home address
but found that he wasn't there.
By noon, Citibank employees in Tampa were organizing
a security response to the threat just as the incident began.
There are threats that come in frequently.
They are all assessed. As you heard from the sheriff,
this threat was taken incredibly seriously.
The reach out to Orlando PD, our security team was aware of it,
was changing their security posture as the event was starting.
And as you saw and as you heard,
we have highly trained, disciplined people on site.
The employee who fired at the suspect was Jonathan Fraley.
He is a Marine veteran.
Deputies say that Fraley took up
a tactical position near a bathroom and opened fire when
Pearson walked through a hallway.
Pearson did fire back but didn't hit Fraley.
Pearson was pronounced dead at the hospital.
There were 3,200 employees at this site when the shooting began.
They were all evacuated.
Four of the people were injured in the evacuation itself,
but thankfully they're okay.
They were treated and released from the hospital.
Wow, some startling details coming out today for sure.
So Evan, have we heard anything from the victim's family at all?
Well, we did make a very brief contact with them.
They are too distraught to speak publicly.
We do understand that she also has a sibling who lives in the area,
and they are just too overcome to begin
to tell people about who they lost
because obviously this is just
a horrific incident for them to go through.
So heartbreaking.
All right, Evan Axelbank live for us.
Evan, thank you.
