Fiery explosion near Okotoks 'horrible to watch,' says neighbour

It was a shocking sight for neighbors Thursday morning. An explosion and fire at this property north of Okotoks. The Foothills Fire Department says a home was destroyed. A few hours later, a strong smell of smoke still lingers in the area. Neighbors told us the explosion felt like an earthquake and that the flames just kept coming. It just kept exploding and getting the flames getting bigger and higher and worse. It was awful, awful. There was just massive flames and then when we saw the second explosion, it was big. I mean, I can't estimate how high the explosion went, but it was big. The Foothills Fire Department says it was called to an explosion at a residence just after 7. When they arrived on scene, the house was fully involved. Both residents were able to exit the building and they were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. RCMPs say there is nothing suspicious about the fire. They say a couple was making breakfast when the explosion happened. The property is near two schools and a hockey rink. Emergency crews stayed near the facilities throughout the incident. Neighbors say this is a shock. It was horrifying to watch, devastating. It's fascinating. I can't imagine what they're going through. It'll really affect the whole neighbourhood. Everyone's kind of pausing this morning for sure and hoping everyone's okay. The fire department says the fire is still under investigation. Chelsea Mutter, CBC News, Foothills County.
