We're keeping it right here at 6:30, our top story this half hour.
A new post-election move to get
the National Guard off the streets of D.C.
Tonight, district lawmakers are calling
on newly elected Democratic governors
to recall their troops as the Defense Secretary plans a surge.
Fox's Bob Barnard in Northwest tonight.
It's been an interesting day.
The Pentagon has confirmed that Secretary Hegseth has plans to flood
the streets of D.C. with more federal troops and equipment.
This coming just hours after D.C. Councilmember Brooke Pinto
announced she has a plan to get rid of hundreds of those troops.
Councilmember Pinto says she's calling on the newly elected governors
of Texas, Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, and Ohio to recall their National
Guard troops that are currently assigned to the nation's capital.
She says that's 628 of the 2,900 guardsmen currently in D.C.,
all part of the supposed crime-fighting Safe and Beautiful
Task Force President Trump created in August of last year,
Now scheduled to remain deployed here in D.C. through the 2028.
We don't want them here. We don't need them here.
As of Tuesday, we have five new Democrat governors
that have the opportunity to make that a reality.
Take back their troops. They can do that on day one.
Those five states account for over 20% of all of the National Guard
who are in D.C. right now.
And so we're calling on them to act quickly.
Pinto is chair of the D.C. Council's Committee
on the Judiciary and Public Safety.
It's hosting a public hearing today about this very issue.
Hearing from residents upset about D.C. police cooperating
with the surge of federal law enforcement here.
Now with word, the defense secretary last week...
Ordered the beefing up
of the military's presence on the streets of D.C.
with up to 60 marked patrol cars,
military tactical vehicles, and boats.
I feel like I have to watch what I'm doing.
I feel unsafe in my own neighborhood.
And to see them walking in front of my house
in a residential neighborhood in D.C.
does not make me feel more safe.
It makes me feel the least safe that I've ever felt anywhere.
Disturbingly, today,
Secretary Hegseth announced that they want to ramp up
their presence of National Guard in the city.
We're not at war with ourselves. We shouldn't be
deploying these types of resources
and strategies in the nation's capital.
We've reached out to several
of those newly elected governors with National Guard troops
here in DC. Georgia has more than 500
and we're still waiting to hear back from them.
