It is time to appreciate the donuts on National Donut Appreciation Day.
Now, if you're thinking to yourself, wait a second,
wasn't National Donut Day over the summer?
Yeah, there's two of them.
National Donut Day is in June.
It was actually started by the Salvation Army.
But November 5th is also celebrated
as a National Donut Appreciation Day.
Maybe it's a marketing gimmick. Maybe it's folklore.
It's an excuse to celebrate the donut.
So we're backing it a hundred percent.
Brad's with me because he happens to own a doughnut shop
or two, so of course any day
we're appreciating the doughnut is a good day to you, my friend.
Absolutely.
Glazed Doughnuts, we're at Drew Street and Patricia in Clearwater.
You've actually got two locations in Clearwater,
here in Myrtle Street as well?
That's correct.
How'd you get into the doughnut business?
Oh, just always loved doughnuts,
thought about opening a bakery, been in the restaurant
industry for a long time.
Finally figured out how to do it
and yeah took the leap yeah. And you actually
got a franchise as well a franchisee in Zephyr Hills.
Yeah we have a new location
that opened in Zephyr Hills with another group.
Good for you. Just opened about two
weeks ago. And you kind of created
this thing we'll see where to how it goes and
grows right? Yeah I've got a couple of partners
but definitely had a lot of
help and we got it all off the ground
and ready to go. So when you go to open a
donut place first
of all you gotta figure out what kind of donuts you're
that you're gonna make, right?
Because donuts these days,
The simple glaze, the traditional, but you can get really crazy.
How did you decide what you were going to do,
what you were going to offer?
Yeah, so we wanted to start with just making a great glazed donut,
as the name is glazed donuts.
So we spent a lot of time really going through the glazed donut
and figuring out how to perfect that.
And then we moved on from there, making a variety of different fillings
and fancy donuts, as you see over here.
And the key is just really making sure everything's
glazed perfectly and then getting on there.
So how does one learn to do this when you don't know how to do this?
You told me you went to Texas to learn how to make donuts?
Oh, yeah, we went. So Texas is kind of the donut capital of the US.
Is that right? I did not know that.
Yeah.
It's really a ton of donut shops over there,
everybody doing a great job, and wanted to
figure out how to learn.
So some of our friends found some folks out there willing
to teach us, and we just got
on a plane, flew out there, worked through
the night for several, about a little week
and a half, and figured it all out.
Really?
Yeah.
So there's some,
you don't have to tell me on television, but are there some secrets
to perfecting this?
Oh, there's definitely a technique,
I'm not a classically trained baker, but definitely
figured it out and getting better every day.
We have some great people that help us bake
at the locations and figuring it out.
Good for you, man.
When do you open?
So the location here on Drew Street is open at 5:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.,
Monday through Friday.
We open a little later on Saturday and Sunday.
We open at 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Nice.
The location downtown that's on the corner of Court and Myrtle,
we open at 5:30 in the morning until 11 p.m. during the week.
And then on the weekends, we're 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
