Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets across France on November 5 in a nationwide day of protests and strikes challenging President Emmanuel Macron. The Interior Ministry estimated turnout at 600,000, while the CGT union claimed that 1.6 million people had participated. Most demonstrations remained peaceful, but clashes broke out in Paris and Lyon, where riot police used tear gas and water cannons as fires were reported. Trade unions, including the CGT, called the mobilisation with support from student groups, amid continuing anger over living costs, public services and education. The protests mark another test for Macron’s government after weeks of unrest across the country.
