I think just first of all, I just want to talk about JV.
JV got hit there at the goal line
on a little slant play in the end zone.
You know,
Safety comes across, hits him in the head.
And our personnel did an amazing job to get out there very quickly and
was right on top of JV.
Ultimately, got him in a good place there.
He was moving all four extremities on command.
Took him to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
And obviously, they gotta do their CT scans and those type things.
And I don't have an update, but hopefully, everything checks out great.
I thought JV was playing awesome too tonight.
And unfortunately, that happened to him.
But prayers go out to JV and his family.
It's a blessing for him to move all four extremities.
It's always very scary and scary for our team.
Yeah, obviously, didn't get off to a great start, down 14 tonight.
But our guys continue to fight, love to fight in them.
They came back and battled, and ultimately tying the game up there
on an unbelievable drive.
I think we started that drive maybe on the minus four.
It was a 96-yard drive.
16 plays, I don't know,
it was like the whole fourth quarter felt like, but
incredible drive to put ourselves back
in position there to tie the game here on
the road against a really, really good Houston team.
Thank you, Dean.
Unfortunately, gave the touchdown back up, and then we had a chance.
We had a chance to go down
and potentially tie the game or take the lead.
And I thought we were moving in the right direction there.
Unfortunate on that play where we throw a swing pass,
they blow it dead,
said incomplete, and then we're getting ready to snap the ball, and
they go back and review it.
And then ultimately said that it was a backwards pass.
You know, obviously, I can't tell from the sideline, you know,
we've got to go off of what these guys do back at the review station.
Thank you, Mr. President.
You know, it's just frustrating.
I was frustrated with some of the stuff tonight that happened,
with some of the
things that we got called for.
We had a touchdown called back.
Didn't agree with that.
You know, it's hard, man.
And I tell these guys, man,
we're playing a ranked team on the road like this against Houston,
It is extremely difficult to come out here
and play like you've got to play
and play clean football and win these games.
And you don't get some things that go your way like that.
It's frustrating.
It's extremely frustrating.
And all we want is consistency.
All the coaches want is consistency on both sides of the field.
And I think.
Man, that shouldn't be that hard to ask.
Thank you, Pastor.
But that's the frustrating part.
But I'm proud of our guys, how they fought.
Just unfortunately, we think we came up a little bit short.
But I do, I think Coach Fritz does a great job with his program.
I think their kids do it the right way.
They play hard.
They play good football.
They're in every game.
And, you know, it was a hard-fought game.
Unfortunately, we didn't finish it tonight.
Scott.
Colt Tabb was having a Colt Tabb game, and he goes out.
That doesn't help matters any update with him.
No, I think he just got hit hard on that particular play.
And was unable to get back into the game.
I talked to him after the game, and he says he'll be fine.
You know, thinking about injuries, you know,
we had to play Evan tonight at center.
He's really hadn't played much center for us.
And he started, you know, we had to start Pass Reese at left guard.
Thank you very much.
Simeon's out at linebacker.
He didn't play tonight.
You know, JV goes out.
Colt Tabb goes out.
You know, these are guys, these are our players, man.
You know, Katarian wasn't able to play.
Edgington wasn't able to play.
So, you know, I think it's a great way, you know,
So I'm really proud of the guys that had to fill in and to go in and
play meaningful snaps.
I thought G Payne did an amazing job
when he had to go in the second half.
He ran hard, ran very physical,
set a tone for us on offense in the second half and
did some great things.
And I thought Pass Reese and Evan played good up front.
I mean, that's a good defense.
And to be able to do what we did tonight, moving the football,
we were very efficient, nine for 14 on third downs, and then one for
one on fourth down, three for three in the red zone.
I mean, we did some really good things tonight, and
just proud of those guys, how they continue to fight.
And next guy stepping up, I mean,
that is the hardest thing when you get to the
season, at the end of the season like this, and
knowing you're gonna have to play some guys.
Did it feel like a momentum swing a bit
that you don't want JV to go off on the stretcher,
but you score, and that changes the game?
Well, yeah, I mean, I thought it was just a great drive.
You know, JV was a part of that drive.
He made some incredible plays during
that drive all the way up, you know,
even on that play, you know, and getting down to the two-yard line.
We ultimately scored.
They tied the game up with about five minutes to go in the game.
Give yourself a chance, man.
Thank you, man.
We certainly grabbed the momentum,
and then they popped off a big run on us there,
I don't know, 50 or 60 yards to take the lead,
which gave us plenty of time.
I think maybe we got it back maybe three minutes to go.
So we had plenty of time.
Hey, let's go down.
And we had great confidence in our offense to go down and make plays,
and we were.
That play that we turned it over, may have been first down.
It was first or second.
And we turned the ball over, and we're rolling.
So, man, it's just frustrating that that happened right there,
but you've got to play clean ball.
Payton didn't play in the first half, you went with Xylan first.
He nearly had a touchdown for you.
Yeah, he did, a couple of critical drops right there.
That would have been a touchdown in the first half, and
then obviously the one there at the end.
Again, you know,
Perry's played a lot for us this year, G Payton's played.
Perry I think maybe in the Texas Tech
game had four catches, some big plays for
us, and so he's made a lot of plays for us as well.
We've got confidence in all our running backs
that they go out there and play.
They've got to make the plays.
We've got confidence in them.
They have to go out and make the plays.
Any idea on Taron, if he'll be able to go next week?
That does change what you do.
It does.
I think he's getting closer, but it's hard to say.
You've obviously got to be healthy.
You've got to be close to 100%.
When you're in the trenches, there's a lot of strong guys in there,
and so we'll see where he's at with him, and hopefully he can get back.
I know he's trying.
He's been living in the training room for the last two weeks.
We'll do a couple on Zoom.
We'll start with Russ, and then we'll go
to Austin from Bearcat Journal.
14-0 in the first quarter.
Scott, what do you think contributed to this slow start
compared to some of the other ones this season?
I'll have to go back and look at it.
I don't know.
Austin?
Yeah, what did you like from the offense today,
especially on those couple drives?
You know, it felt like they were really
getting going most of the drives
and then just some mistakes to pick away from.
Yeah, you know, early on in the game, you know,
You know, it was a couple of...
You know, a couple opportunities where we missed,
where they brought some pressure on us.
I thought we settled in to the game
after about the third drive
and really got a beat on what they were trying to do.
I mean, these guys, they had a bye week last week,
two weeks to prepare.
You're always going to see some new things defensively,
some new stunts, some new wrinkles.
And once we settled in and had a good beat on them,
I thought we were able to move the football.
You know, we ran the ball really, really well
after the first quarter.
Completed some good balls there.
Had a couple of drops, you gotta,
even did some down the field throws
that I thought we should have had.
But we settled in and the guys up front really settled in
and played some really good football
in the last three quarters.
Scott, what do you think the biggest
kind of missing part of the consistency on defense
has been this season?
Just kind of down to down with the yards per play
where it's at right now?
Yeah, I mean, it's a lot of things.
You know, if you can't get pressure with just bringing your front four,
then you've got to bring some other guys.
And when you do that,
you're going to be a little bit looser in the back end.
You know, and I think, you know,
we've tried a lot of different things defensively
to try to disrupt offenses.
It's been difficult there you know
but I think it all starts up front with trying
to get pressure on the quarterback you
know and I think if you can get press
like if you don't pressure quarterbacks
in our league they're gonna make you pay
like there's a lot of really good quarterbacks in this league that that
man they used they sit back there
and have time they're gonna find some open
guys and you can't cover that long I
mean I don't care who you are you can't
cover that long so you know
for us it's all about that trying to get more
pressure and I think you know certainly
something we got to get better at and so
that we don't have to bring linebackers and now now you're a little bit
Softer in the back end when you're doing that.
Thanks, everybody.
All right, thanks, guys.
Players will be next.
