Charcoal Portrait: My Real-Time Process (Loose & Raw Style)

In this video, I’m sharing my real-time process for drawing a charcoal portrait using vine charcoal.

My approach is all about the "Loose & Raw" style. I try to ignore the complicated details at the start and focus on simplifying the big shadow shapes. I’m not just copying a reference; I’m adding my own flavor and interpretation to the face.

Sometimes it goes through an "ugly stage," but I just keep tweaking it until I like what I see. If it looks good to me, then it’s okay!
