In 1969, Harry Saltzman – the man who had just spent seven years producing James Bond – assembled one of the largest casts of leading actors ever put into a British film, and sent them back to the summer of 1940. Two theatrical knights. A future Oscar winner. A future Jackal. A future Quint. And a twenty-six-year-old Ian McShane with no idea what was coming.
Some of them had fought the real war. Robert Flemyng had come home with a Military Cross. Michael Caine had been shot at in Korea. Curd Jürgens had been interned by the Nazis in 1944 and was now playing their envoy. They did not need to be told what any of it felt like.
Fifty-seven years later, three of these twelve are still with us, in their eighties and nineties. The rest we have lost. This is all of them – then, and now.
