What Happened to Earth 41,000 Years Ago is Terrifying

What happened to the Neanderthals around 41,000 years ago? At almost the same time that their populations disappeared from much of Europe, Earth’s magnetic field weakened dramatically during the Laschamp excursion. The magnetic poles wandered, the planet’s protective shield contracted, and extraordinary auroras spread across western Eurasia and northern Africa.
New scientific modeling now reconstructs this ancient event in remarkable detail, revealing how Earth’s magnetosphere fell to roughly one-tenth of its current strength and how regions exposed to energetic particles expanded across Neanderthal territory. This investigation examines whether increased ultraviolet exposure created an unexpected survival challenge—and whether fitted clothing, ochre pigments, caves and wider social networks gave modern humans an advantage.
The chronology takes us to Goyet Cave and Spy Cave in Belgium and Saint-Césaire in France, where final Neanderthal populations overlap the critical period surrounding the Laschamp excursion. These sites cannot prove a single cause of Neanderthal disappearance, but their locations and dates create a striking pattern that deserves closer examination.
Did Earth’s weakened magnetic shield contribute to the disappearance of the Neanderthals, or did it simply intensify pressures already created by small populations, competition and assimilation? The answer could be hidden in ancient bones, stone tools, pigments—and the magnetic history of the planet itself.
