This is MTV Evening News live from our global headquarters in New York City.
Thank you for joining us tonight. I'm Arlene Richards. The latest on the U. S.
Iran conflict, the U. S. Now awaiting a response from Iran to the newest
proposal aimed at ending more than two months of fighting President Trump
telling reporters yesterday he expects to hear from Tehran soon.
When asked if Iran is quote slow rolling the response, the president
saying we'll find out soon enough. This comes as Project Freedom. The U. S.
effort to secure the Strait of Hormuz has been on cause to allow time for a
final agreement. There have been some flare ups in the straight, but
President Trump says the ceasefire announced in early April is holding so
far. U. S. Central Command reports that 58 commercial vessels have been
and four ships have been disabled. Also new today, the U. K. Says it's sending
a warship to the Middle East in preparation for joint efforts to secure
the Strait of Hormuz. This follows an earlier move by France to deploy its
carrier strike group to the Red Sea. Meanwhile, the U. S. Continues to
pressure Iran on the economic front. The Treasury Department announcing a new
round of sanctions yesterday targeting individuals and entities supplying
weapons to Iran's military. Health authorities across the globe are working
to safely remove passengers from a cruise ship struck by enhanced a virus
outbreak. The ship is scheduled to anchor off the coast of Tenerife in
Spain's Canary Islands on Sunday. Each country will arrange transportation for
its nationals. So far, three people have died and several others are being
monitored for symptoms. Passengers remain in their cabins under quarantine
to prevent further spread. A total of 147 people from 24 countries are on
board. According to the C. D. C. U. S. Passengers will take a chartered
medical plane to a quarantine facility in Omaha, Nebraska. There they will be
medically assessed. Some or all may then be released to their homes for
about six weeks of monitoring. The C. D. C. Says the risk to the general
American public remains extremely low from new developments in Iran and the
secretary of state at the Vatican to UFC fighters at the White House. Plus
a tribute to motherhood entities. Daniel Monaghan has your White House
week in review. The U. S. Launching Project Freedom this week, escorting
commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Project Freedom is defensive in
nature, focused in scope and temporary in duration, with one mission
protecting innocent commercial shipping from Iranian aggression. But later in
the week, President Trump announcing a pause in Project Freedom, saying major
progress had been made toward what he called a complete and final agreement
with Iran. Tensions flaring again Thursday, with the U. S. Military saying
it intercepted Iranian attacks targeting three Navy ships in the Strait of
Hormuz and struck Iranian military facilities tied to attacks on American
forces. They trifled with us today. We blew him away. The president saying the
ceasefire remains in place. The talks are going very well, but they have to
understand if it doesn't get signed, they're gonna have a lot of pain.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio accusing Iran of violating international law and
warning the administration is taking the issue to the United Nations. There is
no international law that allows you to say I'm gonna put mines in an
international body of water, and I'm going to blow up ships that don't
listen to us and try to go through. In a busy week, Rubio also meeting with
Pope Leo at the Vatican amid tensions with the White House over the Iran
conflict. In April, the pope condemned what he called a delusion of
omnipotence driving the war. As far as the pope is concerned, it's very simple.
Whether I make him happy or I don't make him happy, Iran cannot have a
nuclear weapon. President Trump brings back the presidential fitness test on
the south lawn of the White House. The president also showing students his
signature Trump dance. And President Trump welcomes UFC fighters to the Oval
Office. But this is the greatest president of all the time in any country, in any
world, in any time, and I thank you President Trump. I like him. I made a good move by
asking him to say that. That was very good, thank you. The upcoming UFC Freedom 250
event planned for the White House lawn on June 14th was also discussed. The
first lady discussing the importance of motherhood at a White House tribute to
military moms in advance of Mother's Day. In every hug, every story read at bed
time, and every sacrifice made without complaint, mothers build the moral
foundation of our families. Brazilian President Lula da Silva visiting the
White House Thursday for talks focused on trade, security, and critical minerals.
President Trump saying the meeting went very well and more talks are planned.
Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt sharing the first public photo of her newborn
daughter Viviana, nicknamed Vivi. While Leavitt was away, Secretary of State
Marco Rubio, who else, filled in. Thank you guys for having me today. I'll be
filling in for Caroline today, obviously. And White House Chief of Staff Suzy
Wiles receiving the Barbara K Olsen Woman of Valor Award this week. President
Trump previously calling Wiles one of the strongest people he knows. Daniel
Monahan, NTD News. Congress returning to Washington next week with hearings
focused on China, national security, COVID oversight, defense spending, and
border enforcement. Senate Republicans are also moving forward with funding
plans for ICE and CBP. And Denise Chris Bobb reports from Capitol Hill. The only
way you can guarantee a matching organ on a specific date is if you control and
the donor dies. Next week, the Congressional Executive Commission on
China holds a hearing on forced organ harvesting in China. The panel includes
Senior Research Fellow Ethan Guttman, former Ambassador-at-Large for
International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback, survivor Kalbinur Sadiq, and
Epoch Times senior editor Jan Jekielek. Jekielek recently published a book on the
topic. Will to order China's organ harvesting industry and the true nature
of America's biggest adversary, China, that control exists in a prison system
full of political and religious prisoners, especially Falun Gong
practitioners and Uyghurs. There is bipartisan legislation in Congress now
to combat this. The Falun Gong and Victims of Forced Organ Harvesting
Protection Act. Yeah. And it just does something very simple. It sanctions
people that are involved in this. Also next week, FBI Director Kash Patel
appears before senators to discuss the Bureau's 2027 budget request. His
testimony comes as the FBI continues investigating the attempted
assassination of President Trump at the Washington Hilton during the White
House Correspondents Dinner. We can expect lawmakers to push for more
details. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan
Kane returned to Capitol Hill for another hearing on the Pentagon's $1.5
trillion budget request. This president's budget for 2027 supports
the secretary and the department's goal of reinvigorating, recharging the
defense industrial base and the national industrial base, enhancing our
readiness and securing our military advantage. A ceasefire is in place in
Iran. The topic of Iran I'm sure will come up often today, which I welcome. I
look forward to sharing the incredible success of our military effort
achieved in a matter of weeks. The Senate Homeland Security Committee
plans a hearing featuring whistleblower testimony on covert Chairman Rand Paul
posting on X quote. The American people still don't know the full story behind
the covid cover up. Meanwhile, Congress is advancing the next phase of a
reconciliation package after they funded other DHS agencies outside of ice and
CBP before recess. Lawmakers considering a reconciliation package
totaling roughly $72 billion through 2029, including more than 30 billion
for ice and over three billion for CBP. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley
says the legislation would help provide quote certainty for federal law
enforcement and safer streets for American families. Reporting from

Sweetie, are you ready to go?
In a sec. You think Granny would like this? Of course she will. Let's go.
Hi! So good to see you. Come in, come in, come in.
Thank you for everything. Oh my goodness. That is so beautiful.
Thank you for everything. Oh, wow.
Hi, I'm Susan Lucci. You may know me from my many years on television. I never
thought about heart disease until I had my own heart event. I felt this slight
pressure in my chest, just slight. I thought, oh it's nothing, it'll go away.
I didn't get it. I did not get it. A few days later, while shopping at a boutique,
that pressure returned, much stronger. It felt like an elephant pressing on my
chest. I had a 90% blockage in my main artery and a 75% blockage in the adjacent
artery. I was rushed into surgery where I received two stents in my arteries.
Stents developed through research funded by the American Heart Association. Those
stents saved my life. That's why I'm in front of you today, asking you to join me
in supporting the American Heart Association by becoming a monthly donor.
Call now or go to helpheart.org. For only $19 a month, just 63 cents a day, you can
help fund the next medical breakthrough, get the next person trained in CPR, the
next hospital certified in high-quality cardiovascular care. I'm so grateful to
the American Heart Association. Their research helped save my life. I can enjoy
life with my children, my grandchildren, and my friends. Heart disease is America's
number one killer, and your support now can help save your life or the life of
someone you love. Give $19 a month with your credit card, and we'll send you this
special t-shirt that you can wear to show that you are helping save lives. Please,
listen to your heart. The only reason I'm here today is because I did.
Please call or go online to helpheart.org. Become a monthly donor, and for a limited
time only, your first month's gift will be matched.
Thank you.
Next week brings the high-stakes summit between President Trump and Chinese
regime leader Xi Jinping, who has the cards heading into the meeting, and who's
changed since their last one. Lee Smith is the best-selling author of
The China Matrix, the epic story of how Donald Trump shattered a deadly pact. He
joined NTD's Tiffany Meyer to unpack all this and more. Here's that conversation.
Lee Smith, thank you so much for joining us. Great to have you on the show.
Thank you very much for inviting me. Great to be with you here today.
Now, a big focus, of course, is on that upcoming Trump-Xi summit in Beijing. Now,
this comes as the Iran conflict is still unresolved. How do you see Trump's
strategy heading into this? What are the cards each side has?
Well, the last time they met many months ago, remember, what preceded
that meeting was Beijing's threat to withhold rare earth minerals, and, of
course, this sent the administration scrambling. Right now, the positions are
very different, since Donald Trump now has a hand on lots of the oil that
Beijing was getting at very steep discounts. So right now, Donald Trump
controls a lot of China's energy, and that makes things very different.
So Xi no longer has the amount of leverage that he had before their last
meeting. So I think that things have changed quite a bit, even though Iran has
not been resolved. The president has seen Iran not only as a problem in itself, but
also as a key ally of China, and right now that ally is in big trouble. And, of
course, the other thing is that neither China nor Russia have done much to help
Iran out of its very serious jam, and there's not much that they can do.
Given the talks we've seen between officials before these trips, some of the
topics coming up that are planned to come up with the Trump-Xi summit is
Taiwan, of course, and then agriculture is a big one for the U.S. side, and rare
earth a little bit less so. But how do you see that? Because President Trump has
said he will bring up the case of Jimmy Lai and human rights. That's a topic
that most presidents have shied away from, human rights in general, when it
comes to China. Why is that?
Yeah. Presidents have shied away from human rights in China since at least
Tiananmen Square, right? That this is something that presidents have not only
shied away from, but they've essentially covered up for. This was in 1989 under
George H. W. Bush administration, then Bill Clinton, who was at first
criticizing Bush in their debate in 1992, said, I wouldn't do that. I would
stand up for the Chinese people who are being repressed by this terrible
communist regime. And of course, he did nothing of the sort. He was the person
who ushered along the WTO, China's access to the WTO, by getting China
permanent normal trade relations, PNTR. And same happened with George W. Bush.
Same happened with Barack Obama. They've all paid no attention. A lot of times
they haven't even said anything, never mind make Beijing hurt for its human
rights abuses. And we've seen what's happened. Of course, you will know a lot
more about this than I do. But what's happened to Falun Gong, no one has made
any, very little noise coming out of Washington about that over the last
several decades. So when President Trump says he's going to make some noise over
human rights, I think this is a very big deal. And I think it marks a
significant change from his predecessors.
And part of that whole focus was in the past, you had certain Chinese
administrations, if you want to call them administrations, where they tackled
the strategy of really reaching out to the elites and making it in their
interest to support the growth of communist China to open up their markets.
And eventually now it's seen as a peer competitor. I think you lay out a lot of
that in your own book, The China Matrix, how the elites are, you know, part of
this whole thing. And it's gotten to the point where now presidents are facing
that issue or dilemma where you can't really pressure the communist regime
because it is now a peer competitor. Lay out that argument. And what can
President Trump do now?
Well, this is a very big problem. And it's been a problem going back for nearly
50 years. And of course, this relationship started with Nixon and
Kissinger's opening to China during the February 1973 trip. So it's over half a
century. But this what's been going on the whole time. I mean, there's a
relationship. The first the first relationship, the core relationship is
between political and corporate elites in the United States. The whole point
then has been to for the corporate elites to get the political elites to
play nice with China so they can make lots of money. And this has happened
even though the corporate elites have found out that they're getting ripped
off, ripped off in China or some of them want to get in and they want to make
deals and they can't make deals and their intellectual property is stolen
and forced to transfer technology. And now a lot of them are simply being
pushed out because because CCP companies have replaced them. So it's
been a disaster. I have to say that this is one thing that that critics of
President Trump have been a little bit concerned about, especially regarding
the TikTok deal. Now, it's not clear to me exactly what the status of that deal
is. But yeah, but this this seemed to resemble previous arrangements between
between political officials, U.S. political officials and U.S. corporate
interest, that it was very important for different U.S. investors to see a
huge return from TikTok. Of course, its parent company being ByteDance. And
the IPO, should there be an IPO for ByteDance, is expected to reap many
hundreds of billions of dollars. So again, it's not entirely clear to me
where that deal is right now. But yeah, but this is certainly this is
certainly something we would like to see the president to to move away from.
I want to come back to something really crucial, though. You mentioned
Taiwan in the beginning. The way I believe that President Trump sees
Taiwan, and I think the appropriate way to see Taiwan, is as a function of a
much larger problem. Taiwan is obviously strategically crucial for the United
States, right? And for Western civilization, the entire First Island
chain. If China makes a run on the First Island chain, makes a run on
Taiwan, that's a big problem. But the reason that China's military is such a
threat, the reason the People's Liberation Army is so big and so
powerful, as Donald Trump has said many times before, is because the United
States has made China rich. It's made the Chinese Communist Party rich. And a
lot of that has come through the trade imbalance, the enormous trade deficit
that the United States has been running with China for decades now. This
amounts to a transfer of trillions and trillions of dollars over the last many
decades. So this is why the tariff regime, this is why the trade war has
been so important to President Trump, to eliminate that trade deficit, or at
least until it's eliminated, cut it down seriously. And to take the money
that the People's Republic of China has been used to investing in different
instruments to defeat the United States, to take that money away from them. So
that's really the big picture. And that's how Donald Trump sees it. And
that's what I explained in a very long interview with the president in my book,
The China Matrix.
And very quickly in the end, given what you know of President Trump, meeting
him and all of that, how would you compare Trump 1.0 to the current
administration when it comes to the China strategy? Any differences,
similarities from Trump 1.0?
Well, I mean, I think the biggest thing right now is we're seeing that Donald
Trump has been rolling up Beijing's allies around the world, Iran, Maduro in
Venezuela, what the different attention that we've paid to Chinese
interference in the Western Hemisphere, including the Panama Canal. I mean,
there's certainly a lot more to do the, you know, the different problems in the
Western Hemisphere. But certainly in the Middle East, there is there is no power,
right? People talk here about, you know, about other powers, whether it's Qatar
or Russia, trying to damage our position in the Middle East. There is no power
that wants to see the U.S. pushed out of the Middle East more than China. Right.
And so this is a very big deal. That's the big difference right now, the amount
of leverage that Donald Trump has over Xi Jinping and that he has over the
Chinese Communist Party. And that is because he has his boot on Iran's
throat. That's a very big deal.
Definitely a lot at play here at Lee Smith. Thank you so much for your time.
Thank you so much. And one day ahead of the planned Trump-Xi meeting is May
13th, World Falun Dafa Day, showing resilience amid persecution. Practitioners
of the faith gathering today in New York City to mark the upcoming
celebration with meditation, music and cultural performances. And today's
Nikul Bani brings us more. Meditation, music and vibrant cultural performances
are part of a gathering here to celebrate World Falun Dafa Day upcoming
on May 13th. Now, practitioners gathered here in New York City today say the
spiritual practice has brought peace and hope to millions around the world.
Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, is a spiritual practice rooted in
meditation exercises and the principles of truthfulness, compassion and
forbearance. Practitioners gather this weekend for a celebration ahead of
May 13th, the anniversary marking 34 years since Falun Dafa's public
introduction in China in 1992.
Falun Dafa, it guide me how to be a good person, to be a better person.
Ever since I started practicing Dafa, I felt a sense of calmness, you know,
and this calmness is not something which is external, it comes from
within. Some passerby also joined in the meditation, describing the experience
afterwards. It was really nice. Like I heard all the city sirens and everything,
but it was like I was able to block it out and like my mind felt really like
clear and powerful. An overwhelming sense of compassion. And I don't know if
acceptance, but but it was like this feeling of love and kindness. It was
still gives me tears.
The event also features traditional dances and musical performances,
bringing together practitioners of all ages to celebrate the practice and its
upcoming anniversary.
But for many practitioners, this celebration is also a reminder of and a
chance to speak out for those who cannot practice freely in China. The Chinese
Communist Party has persecuted Falun Dafa since July 20th, 1999.
Practitioners in China are persecuted and put in labor camps, tortured and
even organ harvested. It's important for people to know because it's only when
everyone is really clear about what's happening in China that there's a chance
for it to stop. And with May 13th just days away, practitioners say they are
preparing larger celebrations in New York City and across the world to
celebrate World Falun Dafa Day. Nikubani, NTD News, New York.
And next Wednesday, a grand parade celebrating World Falun Dafa Day will
bring even more color, lion dancers, dragons and a message of hope and
celebration right here in New York City. Don't miss NTD special coverage of the
annual World Falun Dafa Day parade next Wednesday, May 13th, starting at 10 30
a.m. Eastern, hosted by our very own Stefania Cox and Carrie Dunst only on

Being a cowboy, I don't know anything different from when I was 34 years old.
I did tough things. I thought everybody can do tough things and if you didn't, I
didn't have time for it. I had a very successful career at a very young age
and life is fast. I was preparing physically. I wasn't doing anything
mentally on the inside and then I got hurt. I wanted to be better as a person
and I really dug into mental health. I start my day with 20-minute workouts. I

And now for your sports news, we're joined by NTD's Dave Martin. But before
we get to Dave, just a quick apology or update because we're not going to be
able to be talking to Kimberly Fletcher, founder and president of Moms of
America. She was supposed to be joining us, but unfortunately she couldn't make
it. So Dave, you get to be here a little earlier today. I'll have to do. You'll
have to do. You'll have to fill in. Hopefully the audience is okay with that.
I hope so. I mean, I have a lot of questions here for moms if you want to
answer those. You know, I have a feeling I wouldn't be as good with answering
those questions. I'll just stick to sports today. All right. Well, then let's
get into the NBA playoffs right off the bat. We have two games today. Where do
things stand? Yeah, well, the Cavs just beat the Pistons a few minutes ago in
Game 3, 116-109. Very tightly contested game. Now, Cleveland really led for the
majority of the way. Detroit, though, came back, tied it down the stretch a
couple times. It was really the Cavs defense that saved them in that final
quarter. Max Strews, Jared Allen, even James Harden, known for more for his
offense, all making critical defensive plays down the stretch. Harden also
scored seven straight points there at the end. So the Cavs now trail the
series 2-1, but they had to win this one. No team has ever recovered from an
0-3 deficit to win a series. So that was the first game tonight. Tonight, we've
got the second game between the, it's Game 3 between the Lakers and the
Thunder. Lakers are in the same position as the Cavs. They're down 0-2. They
have to win tonight. Like I said, no team ever come back from an 0-3 deficit.
That game starts at 8.30 Eastern time. Then we've got two more tomorrow. The
Knicks, they've got a 3-0 lead over the 76ers. They can close out that series,
sweep the series if they win it tomorrow. That game's at 3.30 Eastern
time in Philadelphia. And then at 7.30, Minnesota hosts San Antonio. The Spurs
lead that series two games to one. So that's where we are in the four series
right now. The Knicks looking the best at this point. Like I said, they've got
that 3-0 lead. Thunder win tonight, they've got a 3-0 lead too. So that's
where we are. Well, you know, the Knicks and the Sixers, I think they used to
be more equal in terms of their performances. But what's happening now
with the Knicks, with the 3-0? You know, the Sixers, for one thing, they've
got some injury problems. You know, Joel Embiid has been off and on just
because he's had an epidectomy. He had that sprained ankle. He also had that
bruised hip. So he's been in and out of the lineup with all those injuries.
And this guy's a former MVP. I mean, he won the MVP, what, three years ago?
It's tough when you've got your best player coming in and out of the lineup.
Plus, you can see when he's in the lineup, he didn't quite have the same
mobility. I mean, it's tough. We've got ankle and hip problems. The Knicks,
meanwhile, you know, they've been hapless for so long. It's kind of amazing
to see them do this. Especially last year after they fired Thibodeau, who was
their best head coach in I don't know how long. They've done very well with
Mike Brown. Mike Brown, I thought was a great hire at the time, and he's
done a great job in these playoffs. But he's really put Carl Anthony Towns,
their center, a little bit out in the perimeter. He's been more of a playmaker.
So it kind of forces Embiid to come out of the post a little bit.
It's very tough for him to do that. So that, I think, has been a big part
of why the Knicks are here.
I want to talk about the Lakers and the Cavs a little bit because the
Lakers used to be the team, right? They were the ones.
But the Cavs, I remember, were not always so good back in the day.
So what's the status of those two teams now?
You know, the Cavs have never been a dynasty.
You know, last year they had a great regular season, struggled in the playoffs.
Like a number of teams, they had a number of injuries that all of a sudden
came up in the playoffs. I think they lost in the second round last year.
So right now, this year, they're down two games to one to Detroit.
It's tough to say with them, you know.
They haven't had the same regular season that they did last year.
I don't know if they can finish. I don't know if they can get past Detroit.
Detroit's got the home court advantage. They're up two games to one in that series.
Of course, the Lakers, I mean, they have been.
The Lakers and the Celtics, those are the two premier franchises in the NBA.
They have, by far, the two most NBA titles.
I think it's 18 and 17. Next is like, you know, 6 and 5 or something like that.
The Lakers have good players. You've got LeBron James, but he's 41 now.
He's still the best 41-year-old in NBA history, if you ask me.
You've got Luka Doncic. Doncic has been sidelined for more than a month
with that hamstring strain. That makes a huge difference.
Meanwhile, though, Oklahoma City, this is like, they're like Golden State of 10 years ago.
They've got a bunch of good, young players.
You know, all like 30 and other under.
And they're just like the Warriors 10 years ago.
They won last year's NBA title.
They are certainly the frontrunners to win this year.
So if the Lakers are going to do it, it seems like it would be an incredible job for them
if they're going to actually do this.
Uphill battle, I'll say, for LA.
And LeBron James, is this his last season now?
He has not announced it.
He hasn't actually quite said.
A couple of years ago, the popular thinking was
when his son, Bronny James, gets the NBA, that could be it.
Because he wanted to play with his son.
His son plays for the Lakers. It's a very nice thing.
His son is now in his second season.
He's actually got a second son that's probably not going to be coming out for the draft this year.
I don't know if he's planning to stay that long.
How many sons does he have?
He's only got the two.
But I gotta say, it's pretty incredible what we're seeing with LeBron James.
As a 41-year-old, still.
I mean, he put up 27 against the Thunder the other day.
He's still a great playmaker.
He's not as quick on defense as he once was.
But to watch like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in his final seasons,
he wasn't quite the same, of course, at age 40.
Even Michael Jordan retired at, what, 38?
And he was down to, for him, lower numbers.
But LeBron, it's incredible what he's putting up with these days.
Good for him.
Alright, let's shift gears to baseball.
Former longtime Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox passing away,
according to an announcement made by the team.
Yeah, sad day.
What a great manager.
He was a Hall of Famer.
He was a player, too.
Played for a couple seasons in the big leagues.
But it was really as a manager where he made his mark.
He won just over 2,500 games in his career.
This is the fourth most all-time in Major League history.
Most of those wins were with the Atlanta Braves,
where he managed for 25 seasons.
He also managed the Toronto Blue Jays for four.
But his managing career started and ended with stints with Atlanta.
He was there in his second stint where he had the most of his success.
I mean, he led the Braves to 14 straight division titles
from 1991 and 2005.
Included in there, they won the 1995 World Series title,
five National League penalties, and then retired in 2010.
He was also very passionate about the game.
He was about as kind as I can say.
He was ejected by umpires a record 158 times.
Hey, that's some passion there.
If you ever remember watching the Braves play,
you can remember him on the field also arguing with an umpire.
But he was very successful.
His players loved him.
Fans loved him, too.
So our sympathy goes out to his family and friends.
Yeah, I'm sure he's going to be really missed.
All right.
So elsewhere in the game, Milwaukee pitcher Jacob Mizorowski
had an historic outing last night throwing some of the fastest pitches.
That was incredible.
I mean, Mizorowski threw at least 10 pitches
of at least 103 miles an hour last night against the Yankees,
including three pitches that hit 103.6.
Now, those are the three fastest pitches recorded.
They use this thing called StatCast,
which is what baseball's been using to record these things since 2008.
Those are the fastest pitches ever, and he did three of them in one night.
Now, by comparison, since 2009,
all other starting pitchers since 2008
have thrown a total of four pitches registering 103,
and he did 10 by himself.
It was quite a dominant performance.
Now, Mizorowski pitched six shutout innings,
struck out 11 Yankee batters.
Brewers won six, nothing.
Max Fried took the loss for the Yankees.
He's certainly no slouch himself.
The Yankees' Brewers player again tonight, Kyle Harrison,
starts for Milwaukee while New York counters with Cam Schlittler.
Schlittler is actually a very good pitcher himself.
He's probably the early favorite for the American League Cy Young Award.
Right now, he leads the AL in both wins and ERA,
so that game starts in just a few minutes here.
7-10 Eastern time.
I don't know if anyone...
I don't think either one of them is known for throwing as hard
as Mizorowski did, at least did last night,
but, yeah, that was an incredible performance.
So is Milwaukee one of the top teams for this season?
Yeah, they're, I think, in third place right now in the NL Central.
I mean, it's early in the year.
They had the best record, actually, in baseball last year,
but they had trouble in the playoffs, as it turned out.
But they are a very good team.
They are in a very tough division, though.
I was actually talking about this with Kerry last night
on the Evening News.
All five teams in their division are above .500.
Now, meanwhile, if you look at, like, the AL West,
there's only one team that's above .500 in the NL Central.
All five teams would actually be in first place.
Were they in that division?
So there's a lopsided going on right now
between the National League and the American League.
A lot of better National League teams, I've got to say,
than there are American League teams right now.
It's early in the season, though, right?
We go until October.
Wow, you've got a long way to go.
We've got a ways to sort this out.
But right now, you've got the National League Central
really head and shoulders.
The American League, I think there's only, like,
three or four teams above .500.
So it's a little bit crazy if you look at the standings
right now in baseball.
All right, well, enjoy the show tonight.
I will.
All right, thanks, Steve.
Thanks, Arlene.
The new Inverted Food Pyramid,
released by the USDA in January this year,
prioritizes whole foods, proteins, and healthy fats.
In this episode of Vital Signs,
neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter
joined host Brendan Falun
to outline the strengths of the latest dietary guidance
and where he says it may fall short.
Here's that conversation.
Dr. Perlmutter, a pleasure to have you on again.
Great to see you again.
Some drastic changes to America's dietary guidelines
with protein now taking pride of place.
What do you see as most significant
about the changes that have come about?
Let's look first at the broad strokes.
What exactly happened here?
If people recall what the previous
dietary guidelines looked like,
they really did favor, ultimately,
a lot of processed food
as to what we should be eating.
There was no science at all to support it.
One of the things that was supported
in the previous guidelines
was the idea that added sugar to the diet
was probably no real big deal
to the extent that in 2021
we put out a paper.
It was actually an op-ed in MedPage Today
to then-President Joe Biden
saying, you know, the addition of
10% calories coming from added sugar
is erroneous,
it's threatening to brain health,
it's threatening to physiology,
it's threatening to metabolic health,
and it should be rescinded.
It wasn't.
There's no nutritional value for sugar
and, in fact, the nutritional requirement
for sugar is none.
I think that the emphasis this time around
on avoiding sugar,
really, it's what it says,
is absolutely valid.
Either sugar or ultra-processed foods,
which do what?
They raise blood sugar.
In that regard, I'm hugely supportive.
Overall, the new dietary guidelines
favor whole foods,
unprocessed foods,
and certainly emphasize more
the consumption of protein
and really welcoming back to the table fat.
I think it's real important
for your viewers to understand
that it's not just open the doors
to fat in all forms,
but there are some fats that are discussed
in the new dietary guidelines
that are good for us.
Unprocessed fats, fats that come from
sources that provide rich availability
of omega-3s, like fish, for example,
monounsaturated fats,
but highly processed fats,
especially seed oils,
are less recommended,
and I'm in favor of that.
The other thing is the mention of protein,
and I think this time around,
there is a discussion of increasing
dietary protein to 1.2,
to 1.4,
maybe even 1.6 grams
per kilogram,
ideal body weight.
I think it's valuable for me to deconstruct
that a little bit.
So rather than your current body weight
dictating how much protein you consume,
you should be looking at what is ideal
for you based upon your muscle mass
and your height.
So if you happen to weigh, you know,
150 kilograms, it doesn't mean you should
be consuming 200 grams of protein a day.
Again, the ideal body weight.
And your typical male
is 70 kilos, 70 kilograms
for a male,
so 1.2 to 1.6 times that
amount in grams would be the
recommended amount of protein a day.
Overall, increased protein is
important. The proviso I would add
is if you are going to increase protein
consumption to that level,
you want to maximize its utility
by exercising more and building
muscle. I think that's sorely
needed in our society, higher levels of
muscle. If we have time, we'll discuss
why that's important. Where I see some
inadequacies in the new recommendation
are really two areas.
First, there's no specific mention
of dietary fiber. Though it does
mention increased consumption
of fruits and vegetables and nuts
and seeds, as such you're going to
increase your dietary fiber. I'd like to
see calling out dietary fiber
specifically in terms of
grams consumed per day.
In other words, treating dietary fiber
like a macronutrient
though it's carbohydrate, so you can't
do that. But I'd like to see
a recommendation of at least 40
to 60 grams of dietary fiber
in the diet per day.
I think Americans by and large
are really lacking in dietary fiber
which we know is very important
not only for digestion but for nurturing
the gut bacteria, what we call
the microbiome. The second thing is
I think there's some inequities
in these recommendations. Overall
this type of diet is going to be
not something that everybody
in every economic
class is going to be able to afford.
In terms of protein
having such primacy
if we're talking about meat, that's
expensive, right? That's right.
Number one and number two, under the
old recommendations with higher levels
of ultra processed foods or highly
processed foods, the reason
that ultra processed foods are so
processed is to increase their
shelf life ability and also
the fact that mass producing these foods
is very cheap. So to load
your grocery cart with ultra processed
foods is something that people
of less economic means
could do. You're getting calories
but I think what we realize now that
a calorie is not a calorie.
That a protein calorie, a fat calorie
a carbohydrate calorie
all behave differently in human physiology.
That's why people have fallen
into that trap of processed food because
it's so convenient. Go back to look at
protein a little further, Dr. Perlmutter
what is the value of this in terms of
brain health specifically? There are a lot
of values. First of all
when we consume protein and fat
we're consuming the raw material
to build a brain. The brain
is 70% dry weight fat
so a lot of the proteins that are
part of the new dietary recommendations
are actually animal proteins
and as such they do contain fat
hopefully healthful fat. The second thing
with reference to protein is as I mentioned
earlier, protein will help us build
muscle provided we are
challenging our muscles and we stress our muscles
then they hypertrophy meaning
they grow. The reason we want to grow
our muscles is that the muscles when
they're used produce chemicals
called myo meaning muscle kinds
and these are chemicals that
travel from the muscle and ultimately
make their way around the body
and indeed make their way to the brain
so as such we need to begin
to consider the
muscle as an organ
as an endocrine gland
an endocrine gland like the pituitary
gland or the adrenal glands
thyroid gland
are glands in the body, they're structures in the body
that produce chemicals that work off site
they go somewhere else and do
something. Thyroid hormone influences
the brain, influences the heart, influences
muscles etc. Similarly
muscle creates chemicals
called myokines that go around
the body and do good things
for example make their way into the brain
and can ultimately trigger pathways
that lead to actual growth
of new brain cells and
help us reduce inflammation

And a bit of fun news
to end our show. Scientists
visualized a skyscraper sized
tsunami event no one
was around to witness
and a pair of brother bears get wet and wild
to welcome the summer
Here's a closer look at what's making
waves and making splashes
Scientists are taking their studies
of a skyscraper sized tsunami
that recently occurred in Alaska
to another level by making a
3D jet ski riding video game
out of it. No, not kidding
Let me explain. Researchers
say in August of 2025 an entire
mountainside broke off of a massive
Alaskan glacier sliding into
the sea and creating a gargantuan
1500 foot plus tall tsunami
that tore through the remote Tracy Arm
Fjord causing immense destruction
to the landscape. No one was
around to see the cataclysmic event
but scientists say data indicates the resulting
tsunami was the second tallest
ever on record. Nearly as tall
as New York City's Freedom Tower
Since then teams of researchers have
been studying the event to determine not just
how it may have occurred but how to raise
awareness in coastal residents
Enter a 3D video game
like animation created by a
University of Southern California team
showing the tsunami from the perspective
of a jet skier trying to outrun
the huge wall of water
Researchers say the model offers visceral
visual public education on
the size and scope of events like
these. And while they admit the animation
may not win any awards, it offers
the next best and safest
thing to actually being there
Now, from a wall of water
to a wet and wild brother bear
bathtub jamboree. That's what
folks at the Oregon Zoo recently shared
on social media, showing a pair of orphaned
bear siblings enjoying a spirited
splash in a 300-gallon tub
in the Northwestern Zoo's Black Bear Ridge
habitat. The playful dip
was the first of the season, according to the
zoo, which labeled the vid simply
Tubs out, cubs out. And
while the thrashy, splashy glee wasn't
exactly a tsunami, ooh wee
they sure did soak their surroundings
while soaking up some sun
And that's the news for this
evening. Thank you for tuning in.
From all of us here at NTD, have
a great weekend and a wonderful
Mother's Day. I'm Arlene Richards.
Good night.
