Trump Denies Offering to Sell Arms to China’s Xi | China in Focus

The United States and China have agreed to lower tariffs on $60 billion worth of goods. Meanwhile, questions remain over whether President Donald Trump asked Chinese leader Xi Jinping if China wanted to purchase U.S. weapons. Trump and the U.S. ambassador to China have offered differing accounts of the matter.

Retired Col. Grant Newsham described the Trump–Xi summit as a “wash.” He assessed the meeting and addressed claims that Trump discussed selling weapons to China.

Japan’s prime minister said Trump gave her a detailed briefing on his latest talks with Xi, underscoring close coordination between the two allies on China policy.

Tensions are also rising in the South China Sea, where the Philippines says it has detected a new Chinese coast guard presence inside its exclusive economic zone.
