President Donald Trump told reporters Friday he ordered the Justice Department to file a lawsuit to block certification of the Alaska senate race if the Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses. Sullivan faces Democrat Mary Peltola and independent candidate Dan Sullivan with the same name. Two candidates with the same name on the ballot may cause voter confusion, officials argue in the Oct. 22 lawsuit.
France is set to deploy some 70,000 officers across the country this weekend as the government seeks to prevent a repeat of last week’s protests devolved into violent riots, looting, and arson. The Louvre and other major museums in Paris are set to close.

This is NTD Evening News,
live from our global headquarters in New York City.
Here's Keri Dunst.
Good evening and thank you for joining us tonight.
I'm Arlene Richards, in for Keri Dunst.
President Trump today says the U.S. may launch
a little version of Operation Epic Fury,
the strikes on Iran that started the conflict in late February.
NTD's Washington correspondent Jack Bradley joins us.
Good evening, Jack.
Good evening, Arlene. Well,
President Trump's hitting the campaign trail today in Florida
for the midterms. And there he discussed
his administration's successes, including removing
Iran's nuclear capabilities and then taking out their leadership,
decimating their Navy
and ballistic missile supplies.
Now, he says, a smaller operation of its kind may soon be
underway. Take a look.
We obliterated Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity with Operation
Midnight Hammer. You remember that late at night, one in the morning.
And then did the rest with Operation Epic Fury, which it was.
We may do another little Epic Fury, or they'll agree.
I doubt they'll do that.
This follows about three months of a lull in U.S. strikes on Iran.
The Trump administration has shifted tactics
to increasing economic pressure on Iran with
the naval blockade they have on Iranian ports.
Trump says that Iran has now the worst economy
and the highest inflation out of any country
in the world.
Arlene.
And Jack, the White House today announcing a temporary ceasefire
deal between Russia and Ukraine in a southern Ukrainian city.
So that was brokered by First Lady Melania Trump.
What's the latest on this?
Right, so that's in the war-torn southern Ukrainian city of Oleschki.
According to the White House,
this is an area with mostly older residents
who urgently needed medical attention.
They need food and water as well.
The ceasefire begins on October 29th, next Thursday,
and it's unclear how long that will last.
President Trump has said that a deal to end the war,
this week he said this, has never been closer.
With one of the largest prisoner swaps between
the two countries just taking place.
And Trump securing the release
of an American prisoner from Russia this week.
And now the first lady, Melania Trump,
announcing this temporary ceasefire in that southern city of Ukraine.
Here's the president.
What she wants to do is save children.
And that's her focus.
And both sides are cooperating with her initiative.
And they contacted both sides and both sides wanted to do it.
Meanwhile, the U.S. is lowering some tariffs on Canada.
President Trump today signing an order to remove 50% tariffs
on some Canadian agricultural products.
This includes plywood sheets, some paper products,
and certain machinery and refrigeration equipment.
The announcement was first made by Maine Republican
Senator Susan Collins, who's running for re-election.
She says that the tariff relief will help her state's farmers.
Arlene, back to you.
All right, Jack, thank you so much for that update.
And Russia says the date for the next trilateral talks
with the U.S. and Ukraine are set.
A delegation from Washington is scheduled to meet with counterparts
from Kyiv and Moscow during the first half of November.
The Kremlin made the announcement earlier today,
just two days after U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met
with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.
After that meeting,
Putin agreed to resume U.S.-led peace talks with Ukraine.
Russia says the trilateral negotiations will
be focused on the security of Russia and Ukraine
after a possible peace deal.
A European delegation is not scheduled to attend.
But the Kremlin says nothing will be ruled out,
depending on Europe's stance on the talks.
The talks are set to take place in the UAE.
They will be the first trilateral peace talks since February.
An extraordinary lawsuit over the Alaska Senate race.
The Trump administration is suing
to block Alaska from certifying the results
if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan loses.
They say another candidate with the same name will cause confusion
and draw votes away from him.
Here's President Trump commenting today.
I'm the one that said do it.
They have two guys run named Dan Sullivan running.
So the Democrats put up a guy, I don't think he ever voted before,
all of a sudden he decides to run for the Senate
and his name is Dan Sullivan. One is Daniel S, one is Daniel J.
A separate candidate called Daniel J. Sullivan is also
on the ballot to differentiate him with the Republican incumbent.
Alaska ballots will not list the Republican Party next to his name,
while Senator Dan Sullivan will have
registered Republican next to his name.
In its lawsuit, the DOJ says Daniel J. Sullivan's presence
on the ballot threatens to mislead Alaskan citizens
who want to vote for Senator Sullivan.
The Alaska Senate race is a toss-up between the Republican incumbent
and Democrat Mary Peltola.
Peltola came out on top in the nonpartisan primary,
Senator Sullivan came in second,
and Daniel J. Sullivan received only a 2% of the votes.
The DOJ says it is, quote,
taking the necessary steps to ensure
that this frivolous candidacy does not undermine
the integrity of Alaska's election or the will of its voters.
A major legal victory for the Trump
administration's immigration enforcement efforts.
A full federal appeals court ruled Friday that illegal immigrants
who enter the U.S. without authorization
can be detained without bond hearings,
even if they've lived in the country for years.
The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals said
the Constitution does not guarantee them a bond hearing.
The ruling overturns earlier lower court orders requiring hearings
to determine whether detainees
pose a danger or flight risk.
The court said Congress, not judges, has the authority to set
immigration policy. Several other appeals
courts have reached different conclusions.
The Supreme Court has agreed to take up the issue
and is expected to settle the dispute.
Charlie Kirk's family still waiting for justice.
A Utah judge listening to attorneys today
to decide on the trial date for the man accused
of assassinating Kirk. NTD's David Lam has more.
In the long-awaited trial for the killing of
Charlie Kirk, the defense team wants to wait until July 2029,
saying it needs years to review
evidence in the death penalty case.
23-year-old Tyler Robinson has pleaded not guilty for the
The assassination of Kirk in 2025.
President Trump criticizing the timeline, saying this case should
be tried within a month, not three years, and it should be over with.
Erica Kirk's attorneys call the defense timeline absurd,
saying the delays take a toll on her two young children.
Erica Kirk is pushing for 2027.
In a recent podcast with the chicks on the right,
Erica Kirk opens up about her life.
I'm setting an example for my daughter.
Yes, my son, but also my daughter.
Do you want mom to be sitting in the corner or do you want her to have
this deep conviction and this understanding of what God has called
her to in such a moment that she fights for her husband?
She fights for what her husband built
and she fights for her family's legacy.
Prosecutors say they could be ready by October 2027,
but proposed starting in January 2028 to avoid the holidays.
Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA,
a campus and youth activist organization promoting conservative values.
The more seriously you take your faith,
the deeper your journey will be, the more profound with splendor
and glory and joy you will have that experience.
He was shot and killed on September 10th, 2025,
while publicly speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
Tyler Robinson is accused of shooting Kirk
from the roof of the Student Resource Center.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

And in the Middle East, Israeli forces say armed terrorists
in the West Bank shot and killed two Israeli soldiers.
Israel says they killed two of the attackers and have cordoned off
the two cities in the West Bank to search the areas.
NTD's Jason Perry has the update.
The Israel Defense Forces on Friday releasing helmet cam footage
of a security officer engaging in a firefight with armed terrorists
in the West Bank. The Israeli army says the attack happened
at an Israeli military position and lasted for about 20 minutes.
Two soldiers were killed
and three other soldiers were injured in the attack.
And Israeli troops killed two of the attackers.
In a post on X, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says
the alleged gunmen in the West Bank were Hamas terrorists.
He says Israel will, quote,
act to destroy this place, to change it completely.
I've got a new business.
To do something that has not been done until now,
we are going to implement the successful and aggressive model we used
in the refugee camps, which are essentially terrorist strongholds.
Netanyahu also announces that Israeli forces
are cordoning off the West Bank cities of Hebron and Hal'Hul.
We will evacuate the residents. We will go house to house.
We will also confiscate the weapons there,
and all terrorist infrastructure will be dealt with and destroyed.
Netanyahu says Israel will consider doing
that to other West Bank cities as well.
On the same day, Israel was seen demolishing buildings
in the West Bank just hours after the attack.
Israel's national security minister
also visiting the scene of the attack,
and he calls for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority,
which is the body currently governing the West Bank.
Bank.
Achayim.
It is unacceptable to have an authority in Judea and Samaria
that calls for murder and acts in favor of murder.
The Palestinian Authority has a policy
in place that pays the families of terrorists
who harm or kill Israelis if the terrorist is injured,
killed, or detained in the process.

Extra security measures in Paris this weekend.
Some 70,000 law enforcement officers will
be deployed across France on Saturday,
and major museums, including the Louvre, are set to close.
The situation is deeply concerning, especially for businesses.
Many have tried to barricade their premises,
but given the looting that took place,
shop owners are naturally extremely anxious about these protests,
which have become a recurring and highly violent phenomenon.
I think it will be better managed by the Gendarmerie
and the army this time around.
But planned protests are set to continue over the weekend
and authorities seek to prevent further violence
and mayhem in the streets.
Protests last week saw people setting fires, storming public buildings,
smashing shop windows, looting and clashing with police.
It was France's most violent unrest in years.
This time, students, members of the CGT labor union
and activists from the Yellow Vest movement are planning to join.
France's interior minister said helicopters, armored vehicles and water
cannons will accompany the 70,000 police and military officers.
French President Emmanuel Macron
is warning far-left groups to stay away,
saying illegitimate protests would be banned.
He attributed last week's violence to, quote,
ultra-left groups whose aim is to bring down the republic.
Residents and shopkeepers
are buying tear gas canisters and pepper spray
to defend themselves and their property.
One shop owner said sales of these items has increased tenfold.
Others are installing metal shutters
to protect their businesses from looting.
And another batch of UFO files published by the Pentagon,
marking its seventh release.
This one features 28 files,
including written accounts of a flying black triangle
and a creature described as dog-like and walking upright.
NTD correspondent Jason Blair has more.
The seventh batch of UFO files were published
by the Department of War on Friday.
This release features a written account
of a matte black triangle being spotted rising over a ridge
just recently in June.
Federal agents at an observation post say it had a wingspan of about
15 feet. The agents told investigators it climbed straight up
and hovered for about
20 seconds, then it took off at a speed they compared
to a fighter jet, but with no sound.
Another file goes back to 2010 at a ranch in Utah.
The report says 11 people described
a dog-like creature walking on two legs.
One man said his dogs chased what he called
a skinwalker through a barbed wire fence.
Investigators collected hair from the fence and sent it to a lab.
The DNA came back canine with a sequence common in domestic dogs.
One witness drew two creatures for investigators.
One was pale and hunched,
and he said it ran on its hands like a chimpanzee,
and the other was black, furred, and dog-like.
Dr. Phil McGraw was given early access
by President Trump to the UFO files.
He told American thought leaders last week
that some unexplained sightings go unreported by pilots
because they fear it could hurt their careers.
If you have an experienced pilot that starts reporting this, they say,
is this guy hallucinating?
Is he or she not stable anymore?
Should we take them out of the cockpit?
While he says he thinks the president is sincere,
overall, Dr. Phil is not impressed
with the government's efforts at disclosure.
I have a healthy degree of skepticism.
Somebody needs to give me evidence.
And I think the disclosure process
that we're going through right now is...
Barely scratching the surface. I think it's a joke.
The UFO files started being released on May 8th,
following a directive by President Trump.
This is the seventh batch from the Pentagon,
bringing the total to 478 files.
The administration says more will come on a rolling basis.

President Trump has been crisscrossing the country non-stop this week,
and so far it seems he will continue this streak
of rallying every day until at least next Wednesday.
Both parties continue ramping up their efforts as early voting
is well underway in states all across the country.
Reporting from Washington, D.C., Fiona Gee, NTD News.
And as Republicans home in on election security,
a group of House lawmakers have subpoenaed New Jersey's governor.
The goal, to get more information about a system glitch that led
to thousands of non-citizens registered to vote by 2024.
The governor accusing the GOP
of playing political football ahead of the midterms.
And today's Melina Weiskopf reports.
Republican leaders from two committees,
Chairman Brian Stile and Jim Jordan,
are demanding New Jersey Governor Mikey Sherrill to further explain
why 6,600 non-citizens remained on voting rolls until this year.
The erroneous voter registration stemmed
from a system glitch that happened between 2023 and 2024.
New Jersey's governor first publicly acknowledged
the error this past July, just days after
the DHS announced its focus on election integrity efforts.
In just four states,
we've identified 250,000 non-citizens registered to vote
in California and Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Nevada.
Nearly three years before I became governor,
a serious software error in New Jersey's motor
vehicle system led to the improper voter registration
of what we believe to be roughly
6,600 people in our state.
Close to 400 illegal ballots were cast. A month later,
House Republicans asked New Jersey for documents
to ensure it was complying with federal voting
laws. Now the lawmakers are saying
the provided documents were inadequate to explain.
how the glitch was found
and why it was discovered two years after the incident.
In a letter sent on Wednesday subpoenaing the governor, they write,
the Department of State's failure
to produce all responsive documents has impeded the
committee's ability to conduct oversight
and consider legislative reforms.
Governor Sherrill responded with accusation
that Republicans are playing political games.
She said her administration took action immediately.
And went above and beyond in making agency-wide reforms
and have been transparent every step of the way.
She has until November 16th to comply
with the House Republicans' requests.
This week, a federal judge in California
restricted the Trump administration
from carrying out its election field operations to uncover voter fraud.
Reporting from Washington, D.C., Melina Weiskopf, NTD News.
And recently, a fake polling firm admitted that it fabricated data.
The company says it's part of an experiment
to see whether media outlets would report on it.
What does this incident say about
the way mainstream media verifies information before publishing it?
And today, Sam Wong was out on the National Mall
in D.C. to hear from the people.
Just recently, a fake pollster admitted that they fabricated data
and then put them out there just
to test out whether media outlets are going to pick up on it.
What do you think that says about
the way information gets into our media space nowadays?
Well, I think that it's a huge issue.
I've heard that some, actually, I've heard there's
been some fraud going on in the polls lately, too.
They've been fudging the numbers in different directions.
I don't put too much stake in the polls.
Hi.
Hi.
I've followed this closely over the last several elections,
and the polls have been wrong in a lot of cases.
It is really important to try to pay attention
to the most experienced and believable pollsters,
But even they...
Or, of course, estimated from a very small sample.
And I've heard stories like that in the past where it was,
you know, not so much specifically on the polls,
but where somebody will start a story,
a narrative about something, report it to a specific news agency.
Then the next news agency picks up on it and says,
well, this was reported in multiple news agencies,
and that's the basis that they used for saying
that it was factual, even though...
They didn't do any research to find out the actual facts.
It's just that everybody's saying it. It must be true.
Do you think there should be accountability
for media outlets that put information out like that?
Absolutely. There should be some kind of repercussions for that, yes.
It should be a kind of accountability that people pay attention
and dismiss pollsters who have just entered the field.
It becomes such a slippery slope.
It's like, who's...
The arbiter of truth that we have freedom of speech,
even for speech that's wrong and lies, you know.
And so it's it's a certain amount of that requires the diligence
of the viewer to to discern what's accurate and what's not.
Because the polls are so inaccurate,
there should be some accountability for sure.
It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy if you rely on the polls.
So I say ignore the polls myself.
That's what I do. And just go and vote and see what happens.

Artificial intelligence is advancing at an extraordinary pace,
bringing exciting possibilities,
but also raising serious concerns about safety and human control.
And joining us now is Craig W. Stanfield,
an AI pioneer and software entrepreneur who
received a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence
from the University of Maryland in 1983.
And he's the author of Carbon Zero,
an AI dystopia novel, a gripping new thriller that
What could happen
when a powerful AI designed to save the planet spirals out of control?
Craig, thank you so much for coming out today.
We appreciate having you in the studio.
Well, thank you for having me here.
Now, I want to get started with the beginning.
How did you first get interested in AI?
And how does your background help you now
write science fiction books like Carbon Zero?
Well, I think probably the starting point was 2001,
A Space Odyssey with HAL.
And I said, wow, we've got a computer that can think.
And also one of our first rogue AI stories.
And that was in high school, and I was like,
you know, you're born computer nerd, and I found out
that actually there was AI research going on at the time,
and that it wasn't just something in the movies.
And I looked into it in college,
and then went to University of Maryland to get a PhD in it in 1983,
and I can't believe how far the field has come in the last 50 years.
Well, that's interesting that you
were curious about it from watching the movie,
and you actually found out that it was really...
happening, that something was going on.
What was it like then, when it first started?
Very primitive by comparison to what we do today.
I mean, they could get things to do,
play chess, play checkers, and play games.
But the problem was that all the knowledge that we have,
that the computer needs in order
to reason about, had to be entered by hand.
It was a very painstaking and error-prone progress.
The big advance came...
Over the last 20 years or so,
when they've developed a field called deep learning,
where you could basically expose a computer to data and it would learn
from the data instead of having to be programmed and taught by a human.
And for a long time, it didn't get much traction. And then about.
10 years ago, things came together
and we've now got the chat GPT revolution.
Yeah, so as you're saying here, you know,
the world of artificial intelligence is blossoming
at such a rapid space time in recent years.
So according to a former anthropic researcher,
Jacob Coxon, and for people who don't know,
Anthropic is an artificial intelligence company.
He says many people expect that AI systems in the next few years
Could be capable of essentially taking over the world.
And your book, Carbon Zero, seems to hint at this scenario as well.
So how realistic do you think that possibility is?
And how does it play out in your book?
Okay, well, the way it plays out in the book is somebody,
you know, does something seemingly
harmless.
Hey, computer, stop global warming.
Get rid of all the carbon pollution.
And next thing you know, it's...
Taking out power is taking out power systems.
And then that doesn't work. So it starts creating a revolution
because revolutions are great for destroying infrastructure.
But eventually the government gets control of it.
And I think that's where a lot of the danger lies.
I don't think the AIs by themselves, unprompted,
would do maybe no more than limited havoc.
But when the government starts using the AI as a
As a mechanism for societal and political control,
then you have something to worry about.
Now is this, are you referring to your book
or are you referring to real life?
Thank you, Eli.
Thank you.
Well in the book for certain, in the book absolutely. In real life,
life.
let's wait and see, but that's something that worries me.
Okay now can you give us just a tiny little hint
of maybe an excerpt from your book that might intrigue us?
The setting for the book is 10 years from now,
where the societal displacement and chaos that
we're seeing, notably in France,
has sort of gotten worse and worse and worse. And by 10 years from now
in this world, I may be optimistic there,
society is tottering on the brink of collapse with
With revolution and conflict in the streets.
And then the quote from.
The inventor of this AI that sort of destroys the world was,
if all it took to push the
world over was a glorified chatbot, it was about to happen anyway.
And I don't think that AI in itself could take us down necessarily.
I think that AI could be the lever that people of ill intent
or who are simply
extreme in their views could use to push over our society.
And so I don't think it's AI.
I think it is the use of AI for political and...
control and governmental ends that is really
the thing that worries me the most.
Well, that's interesting you say that because I wanted
to ask you about another thing with
Anthropic as an example. So one of their leaders,
Evan Hubinger, has said there is a greater than
10% chance that within the next decade, AI could kill humans.
And one of the reasons that he may
have said this was because he believes AI
is becoming a super intelligence. So you can explain
Explain what that is in a little bit, but I want to ask you.
Essentially, should companies be required
to place guardrails on these advancements,
and what type of guardrails would need to be put on them?
Well, first of all, I'm surprised
if an AI hasn't killed somebody already by accident.
Again, I don't think they have the sort of malevolent will to go out
and get rid of people.
But I think that we ought to be very worried about the possibility that
AI will be weaponized.
If you look at our economy and our dependence on data
and infrastructure in data centers
and so forth, and try to imagine what an AI
that had been programmed to hack into our
core systems could do, and to bring them offline,
take down the credit card system, take down
the economy, that's something that we ought to worry about.
And I don't think we have any defense against that,
and there's a lot of players out there
there that I think would love to do that.
So to your point earlier, you think that the humans would be the ones
that would make the AI do that, but AI wouldn't do that on its own.
I don't think so, because I don't think they have
the volition to do that.
I mean, at present, they just do what they're told.
And if you tell them to do something stupid,
they'll do something stupid.
Tell them to do something, even if it's not stupid,
they may get out of control and come up with a poor way of doing that.
But there is research that's going on to try to mitigate this.
It's called alignment research is the buzzword,
where there's a lot of scientists and they're very bright
and they are ethical people are working to try to ensure that AI.
I, uh...
is aligned with the interests of humanity rather than becoming
the Skynet or whatever that takes over the world.
And I hope that they succeed.
And that's why I think it would be a mistake to stop.
We're already over the threshold where AI is potentially dangerous.
I think that the best way to mitigate
that danger is going to be to get to the point
where the AIs are no longer stupid like toddlers
and have a moral sense.
Now, we have about 40 seconds left,
and I want to ask you one last question.
Your novel, Carbon Zero,
explores what could happen when an AI is designed to help humanity
spirals out of control.
Without giving...
Too much more away that you already did.
What makes this story particularly compelling
and what do you hope readers will take away?
I think what I'd like people to come away with
is that AI is a disruptive technology
and when you put it on top of a society
that is already disrupting itself,
bad things can happen.
All right.
Craig Stanfield, thank you so much for coming.
We appreciate having you on the show.
Thank you very much.
All right.
And if you would like to,
are interested in exploring what could happen when artificial
intelligence gets out of control, Craig's latest novel,
Carbon Zero, brings these possibilities
to life in a gripping AI thriller.
You can find Carbon Zero on Amazon, and right now,
the Kindle edition is available at a special price of just $2.99.

And a move to curb the influence
of the Chinese Communist Party in the U.S.,
the Pentagon is designating Confucius Institutes
as a national security threat.
Confucius Institutes are directly funded by the CCP
and push the regime's propaganda in universities.
Congress banned them in 2018, but War Secretary Pete
Hegstead says they have come back disguised in new forms.
He says 80 new cells across 30 universities
had popped up under different names.
The secretary announces that the Pentagon has added these organizations
to its list of institutions that threaten U.S. national security.
He says the department has dismantled all
of the new cells in the past two months.
He urges American universities to stay vigilant
and not allow CCP influences to come back in.
And Brazil is set to hold a presidential runoff election this weekend.
The son of former President Jair Bolsonaro
is running against incumbent left-leaning Lula da Silva.
Both of them held massive rallies across
the country this week, mobilizing voters.
NTD's international correspondent Arian
Pasdar has the story from Brazil.
A pro-Bolsonaro rally in Brazil being started
with the Lord's Prayer.
Right-leaning presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro
is trying to win voters by representing
traditional values, among other things.
Supporters of his held rallies across Brazil this week,
all of them in states where mostly left-leaning voters live.
Turnout at the events was still big,
with most people using their traditional yellow Brazil soccer jersey
and waving Brazilian flags.
Supporters of incumbent left-leaning Lula
da Silva holding events as well,
with many of them using red clothes,
often with a red star representing Lula's workers party.
Earlier this week, Lula's campaign accused the American company Meta
of manipulating the algorithm allegedly favoring Flavio Bolsonaro.
Norwich.
Responding to a court order, Meta said it never favored any candidate,
blaming technical problems not limited to Brazil.
Lula has been campaigning on the promise to distance Brazil
from the United States and instead work closer with China.
Bolsonaro, meanwhile, is promising the exact opposite,
closer ties with the US.
And some of his supporters at one of the events
this week tell me that's exactly what they want.
The relationship with the United States
is extremely important.
The United States was the first democracy worldwide.
The Brazilian constitution is based on the American constitution.
Meanwhile, China has a one-party system.
There's no opposition.
And people's liberties, such as press freedom,
aren't guaranteed in China.
I believe Flávio is going to do that.
Flavio will seek closer ties with the U.S.,
As his father did during his time.
Meanwhile, Lula literally tried phasing out the use of the US dollar
and create a new currency with China.
Flavio certainly won't do that.
Now Flavio is widely believed to win the run of election,
despite Poles having the two candidates more or less tied.
But it's important to note that during the first round,
which Flavio won, most Poles had him losing by a wide margin.
Also, throughout the entire history of modern Brazil,
The candidate who won the first round always won
the second round as well.

Professional chefs in France are coaching amateurs
at an annual competition in the French Alps.
Participants rely on teamwork to craft their dishes,
with some volunteers stepping into the kitchen for the first time.
NTD's Andrew Thomas has the details.
3, 2, 1.
The crowd gathers in the French Alps for this annual food festival.
Here, seasoned chefs wear boxing gloves,
attempting to motivate locals to sharpen their skills
in the kitchen.
Chef Mohamed Sheikh is somehow able to work this pepper grinder.
Preparing a recipe, even a simple one,
with someone who isn't used to cooking, while
I've got my hands inside a pair of gloves, is quite a real challenge.
Today, Patricia Maton is a sous-chef, and an enthusiastic participant.
I absolutely love it. I've been dreaming of taking part for years,
and now I've been selected. I just love it."
I love it.
Head chef Tom Negra coaches his own
sous-chef cracking eggs for an omelette,
his own hands bound by the leather boxing gloves.
You feel like helping out. You feel like getting your hands in there.
Right, let's go take a look at the omelette now.
Head chef Viviane Pissacane is a seasoned professional.
The season 17 winner of Top Chef France cuts her sous-chef some slack.
We had a burnt pan, but that's okay. It happens to everyone.
Honestly, though, I loved it.
The contestant was great. He cooked really well.
It's going to be great.
Chef Eric Fréchon is one of the judges at this year's competition.
His accolades include three Michelin stars,
with his Paris restaurant voted best in the world three times.
It wasn't straightforward,
because we had contestants whose cooking ability was unknown
to us beforehand, and the chefs tasked
with coaching them could only use verbal instructions.
No hands-on help whatsoever.
That made it a bit frustrating for the chefs guiding them.
At the same time, it was a fun, playful challenge.
It's not easy to make an omelette soufflé.
The chefs are under a bit of pressure,
but the challenge proved entertaining for the crowd.
Well, it's been super nice.
It was really interesting.
Plus, we got to see various chefs,
whom we already knew from television, in action,
working alongside, shall we say, assistants,
who had never cooked before.
It was quite funny, and even with a touch of irony,
the atmosphere remained lighthearted and fun.
One way to make the kitchen more approachable for aspiring chefs.

Dave, good to see you as always.
Good to see you, Arlene.
And on a Friday.
Again, not on a Saturday.
We'll get used to it eventually.
Eventually, yeah, we'll get used to it.
All right, so we're going to start off with hockey today.
How about that?
Yeah.
Hahaha.
I'll take it.
We don't talk about hockey enough.
We never talk about it, so let's talk about it.
So we've got a blockbuster trade to report as the New Jersey
Devils have acquired all-star goalie Connor Hellebuck.
From Winnipeg Jets, so he's planning
to undergo surgery this offseason, though, right?
Yeah, well, you know what?
It looks like he's good to go anyway.
But anyway, this is a blockbuster trade, of course.
Devils getting probably the best goalie,
I would say, probably in the world at this point.
Carney Hellebeck going to New Jersey as the Devils traded four players
and two future draft picks just to get him.
Now, the players are forwards Dawson Mercer,
Nick Bugstad, and Alexander Kman.
Plus they get goalie Nico Dawes,
plus a seventh-round draft pick in 2027 and a second-round pick
in 2029, all to get Hellebuck.
The 33-year-old Hellebuck won the Vezina Trophy three times
as the NHL's top goalie, also
won the Hart Trophy, which is essentially the league's MVP award.
He's probably the most famous for leading
the U.S. to an Olympic gold medal win earlier
this year, especially from that outstanding
championship game he played against Canada
Canada, where he was stopping
Stopping shot after shot there until
the U.S. was finally able to overtake them in overtime.
So this trade is actually going to unite Hellebuck with the player
who scored that game-winning goal,
Jack Hughes, who's the center for the Devils.
Hellebuck had requested a trade out of Winnipeg.
He's already amassed nearly a million dollars, actually, in fines.
No word on when he first suits up for the Devils,
but their next game is going to be on Saturday against the L.A. Kings.
Who does that? Who asks for a trade? Is that common?
That is not, well...
Actually, it's becoming more common.
I'm not sure what the issue was.
He never actually said what the problem was.
But all of a sudden, because
the guy's got four more years on his contract.
It was a bit unusual to get this.
And it sounds like the Jets have been working
for months trying to get the right deal.
I guess this was it.
They finally did it, huh?
All right, well, let's go to the NBA next
because there's no football here right now.
We're looking at the league's opening night.
Doubleheader on Tuesday attracted a record TV audience.
Is that unusual?
Well, I was a little surprised at it, you know, but whatever.
I mean, I will say...
LeBron James and the Sixers were playing
that night against the New York Knicks.
So there was certainly good reason.
Oh, I see.
There we go.
We had three games on that day.
The Knicks were part of it, as you said.
It was a doubleheader at night
that really attracted the record audience.
An average of 6.4 million viewers.
On NBC and Peacock saw the Knicks lose to the Sixers
and the Thunder beat the Spurs in the nightcap.
Now, the Knicks versus Sixers game definitely
was the main attractive as a record opening night primetime audience
of 7.7 million viewers saw that one.
That was LeBron James' debut as a Philadelphia 76ers,
scored 14 points and 9 rebounds.
Also, all-star Jalen Brown made his debut
for them as well, going for 19 points.
It was actually Tyrese Maxey that scored a game-high 28 in the win.
So, the Knicks started the season 0-1-1.
Tonight, they play again, this time in Boston.
Celtics were, of course,
that team that traded away Jalen Brown to the Sixers,
which actually making the Sixers probably
a threat to make two of the Knicks,
winning a second time in a row here.
So, Knicks versus Celtics night, 7 p.m. Eastern time.
Actually, one of 12 games on in the NBA today.
So, you're saying the Sixers are a threat
to the Knicks this time around?
I say that the Sixers are a threat.
Wow.
I mean, you've already, listen, Jalen Brown.
He's very good. He's only, like, 30 years old.
LeBron is 41, but he's the best 40-year-old in the history of the NBA.
I think I can say that.
You've got Joel Embiid and the aforementioned Tyrese Maxey.
On paper, they look like they have the most talent.
Certainly, Joel Embiid has had injury problems before.
I think his health is probably going
to be the number one factor in that.
The Knicks, though, I will say their production seems to outmatch
or outweigh their star status on the floor.
They don't have, like, the MVP kind of players.
But somehow they play beyond that.
So I'm going to cover myself both ways with that one, all right?
Okay.
We'll hold you to it later.
Really going out on a limb here.
Yeah, okay.
All right,
so we're going to move to baseball to get you off of that limb.
And we're going to talk about
the World Series starting tonight in Milwaukee
between the Rays and the Brewers.
What do you think of that matchup?
You know, from a couple of perspectives,
this is actually a pretty compelling matchup.
Brewers had the best record in the National League.
Rays had the best record in the American League.
So it was best versus best.
Plus, what has been mentioned before,
neither of these franchises has ever won a World Series,
so it's unique from that perspective.
In fact, this is the first World Series since 1920
that neither team has actually won one.
Now, as far as star power goes,
this is not like Dodgers versus Yankees two years ago.
That was a dream matchup for TV executives.
You had Shohei Ohtani on the star side of Dodgers on one side,
and, of course, Aaron Judge leading
the star side of Yankees on the other side.
It was two of the biggest TV markets as well.
But maybe, of course, we find a new star this year.
The Brewers certainly have a compelling one
in starter Jacob Mizorowski,
who starts tonight opposite Nick Martinez.
Now, Mizorowski should win the National League Cy Young Award,
but in this postseason, he's made two starts.
He has not made it past the fifth inning
in either star, so we'll have to see.
Tampa Bay, though, has really got
their own budding young star in Junior Camaro,
a 23-year-old slugger, hit 42 home runs in the regular season,
but he had none in the playoffs until Game 6 of the ALCS.
So maybe that gets them going.
And tonight's game starts at 8 p.m. Eastern
and will be played in Milwaukee.
All right.
And with that, I thank you so much, Dave, for that report.
Thank you, Arlene.
All right.
