We broke 12 locking carabiners all lined up from weakest to strongest. They did not break in that order though! These carabiners have different gates and we show them to you before breaking them. It's a hybrid between a buying guide and teaching what HMS lockers are and just pure edutainment. I think it helps trust carabiners you trust your life to, when you see HOW they break, not just a number printed on the side.
Our lowest broke at 20.82kN and our highest broke at 31.88kN. Please don't make strength a main purchasing decision, use and shape and function and size, etc are good things to consider. They are all super good enough!
00:00 Intro 00:22 Showing the carabiners 03:39 Breaking them 14:37 Final Carabiner Destruction
12 Locking Carabiners Showdown from Weakest to Strongest.
Let's go break them.
How not to get sponsored by Petzl.
There is a conspiracy all the weak ones are next to the dyno.
Hi, I'm Ryan Jinks and we are going to break these 12 Locking Carabiners.
Ironically, this is the weakest rated and Matt Rock is making big claims at 30 kilonewtons.
So we got 22 to 30 and we're just going to pull them all in line.
I find that carabiners break all sorts of ways and we might not get the results you
might think we'd get.
Let's go into them real quick before we destroy them.
So these two are our weakest.
This is a Kong 22 kilonewtons and it has a triple action.
Up, twist and open.
All carabiners are at least one action.
Fun fact.
For our heavyweight over here, Matt Rock is claiming a strong 30 kilonewtons.
This is also a triple auto locker.
Austria Alpine micro screw gate and you can tell us what this shape is.
Maybe a modified B.
It's also pretty small.
I do have to give a big shout out to John Fioroni for chasing down all these carabiners.
He runs ExtremeGear.org and when you buy gear from ExtremeGear.org, 10% supports this channel.
So thanks for doing that.
We've got another Matt Rock in here at 26 kilonewtons and this is also a triple auto.
This is an Edelrid slide lock.
D shape at 23 kilonewtons.
And this is Petzl's easiest to open locking carabiner.
It's a pretty neat latch that keeps that lock on.
I believe they call it a wire lock.
It's the Vertigo WL.
Is that working load?
There's no limit.
Wire lock.
What's next?
Another Austria Alpine.
This is the screw gate Ronda, which we had some cool slide lock Rondas earlier at 23
kilonewtons.
Check out our other carabiner showdown videos.
Just a fun way to do gear reviews.
This isn't real science more than it is just showing you how carabiners break.
Things that you trust your life to.
This is 25 kilonewtons.
This is by DMN and this is just a, nope, that is a triple auto locker.
And it's tiny.
I would keep that around.
I have a climbing technology screw gate.
And it's 23 kilonewtons.
Here we have a Mammut triple auto locker at 24 kilonewtons.
And the rating on here looks like 2,419 kilonewtons, but it's 9 kilonewtons this way.
This is a singing rock and a three stage locker at also 23 kilonewtons.
For our final contestant, which was in the middle of the chain, black diamonds,
rock lock at 24 kilonewtons screw gate.
A quick note about HMS carabiners is they are wide on one side.
So you can do things like munters or clip a bunch of stuff to them.
But if you clip bling, bling.
But if you clip something to the gate side in like an anchor orientation,
this is not as strong as this.
And this could break it down as low as 50% of what the number says.
As opposed to a D-shaped locker,
which will naturally align whatever you're putting in here along the spine.
Strength wise, these are rated the same,
but you have to have a lot more material in an HMS shape to achieve the same strength.
The shape is not designed for strength. It's shaped for the use.
Yep.
Let's go break some stuff.
We've put them all in a chain link from weakest to strongest.
What's your prediction, Bobby?
I predict the strongest one will not be the last one standing.
I agree with that.
I want the Kong to go down first though, because I don't like the way it feels.
I definitely don't think Mad Rock is going to be the last one standing.
I'd laugh if Petzl was the first to go.
Again.
Is it the Petzl?
No.
No?
Oh, it was the Kong.
Oh, no, wait. It wasn't the Kong. The Kong is right there.
The Kong survived.
Wait. Oh, the little one. It was the little guy.
Oh, and then this guy. Oh, did we not lock these locking carabiners?
Yeah.
Oh, here we go.
Here we go.
I don't know where the rest of it is.
To be fair, it may not have been locked.
We're seeing a trend.
I'd like to take note, this micro did not break at MBS.
That is 22 kilonewtons, and this is not 22 kilonewtons.
Are you having a hard time connecting these?
Yes. So in all of our other carabiner showdown videos,
we have found once you take it up to 20 kilonewtons or so,
most of them don't open anymore.
And so I have found two that don't open anymore.
We should maybe quick link those.
Yeah.
Is this the same shape? This kind of looks different.
This looks more D than it used to be.
Oh, is this the rest of our little guy?
Yeah.
Good find.
Well, let's see.
It's not all of it.
Why are you licking that?
This is grass, I think.
Is that how you tell?
Yeah.
I'd say this might be the next to go, unfortunately, because it is not.
No, it's horribly.
What shape is that?
I know how considerate.
Just stay together.
Stay together.
Make our job easy.
Well, that's what happens when you lock your carabiners.
Oh, Petzl, wait.
Auto locking Petzl.
That is definitely not the same shape.
Well, no, it's also not closed.
Come on, baby.
You got this.
Oh, yeah.
Wow.
This guy's still in the game.
I can't believe it.
Um, the rest of these look OK.
So it says 2419 and we got 2490.
Clarify that.
Yeah, your up arrow looks like a one, guys.
OK, so this is a fun observation is it won't close until you pull it and it pulls itself
into that key lock.
It was the Kong.
Yeah, that was respectable.
Yeah, because it's rated for 22.
I know.
Yeah, it's just an old style.
Wow.
So the this came open because it was connected to here.
Oh, oh, so that locking carabiner works really good.
Not to get sponsored by Petzl.
Yeah, unfortunately, it was out of slow-mo and the camera got hit because it's just
bouncing up and down.
Oh, come on.
Come on.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, that looks like King Kong.
Get it?
Kong.
I don't think it will show up on camera, but the pigmentation at the stress point is changing.
So you're saying this is standard use for these carabiners?
No, I'm saying it's unhappy.
Working extra hard.
Finally happened.
There you go.
That's pretty good at 25.
It's rated for 23, but it's been pulled up to that.
This is the fourth time.
The Petzl is still hanging in there.
Whenever we pull it, it locks itself back into its lock.
Self-closing carabiner.
It should be featured on the website.
And the rest of them are basically perma-shut.
They're all.
Oh, is that still in the game?
That's.
These are both.
Oh, Mad Rock is in the game.
But we haven't taken it up to their breaking point.
Rhonda is not going to be happy with me if I open that.
Nothing.
With the Singing Rock is I can't triple auto unlock it, right?
I can't slide it up because the nose is shoved down.
Are we getting stronger?
20, 24, 25?
High 25s?
Yeah, we're getting stronger.
Yeah, we're getting stronger as we go.
Sometimes when you pull up aluminum up to its breaking point a couple times,
it could actually break lower than a previous number we've gotten.
Let's see if that Rhonda goes now.
Oh, Rhonda's in the game.
What is this?
Oh, and where did the rest of it go?
It's rated for 23.
We just got 23.
But that is a lower number than our previous tests.
So this has been this has gone up to 25 a couple times now.
And when the nose comes off, it's now got the open strength of the carabiner
because it no longer has this side helping hold it closed.
So this is rated for nine when it's open.
But that happened just, you know, in real instant.
That's what it sounds like when they break.
What is that?
Singing Rock.
But it stayed locked.
And that's what's important.
Singing the blues now.
We got 24.92.
Now, anything you get above 20 is going to be fine for your safety.
So if something did break below MBS, still amazing.
If it broke at 40, who cares?
Why do you need that?
But it is interesting to see how they fail,
what happens when you stress them out and that they don't open.
And we have a lot of fun comparing them all.
Make sure you check out our other 12 carabiner showdown video
because we did it with wire gates.
Did it get the Grigri again?
Knocked all our ---- off again.
Every carabiner showdown video.
Oh, the Ronda.
Freaking Ronda.
Because we have to glue this back together.
Can you please smash that like button?
You didn't use the right glue.
Oh, here's some of it.
I mean, it's rated for 23.
Keeps going above that.
And it did, fun fact,
open for us to connect this last test.
Hey, what's nice is the gate is still functioning
and we got another jagged result.
And part of the nose is missing,
but I think that actually happened a little while ago.
So that mad rock is sort of functional.
How's our, uh, how's our heavyweight doing?
I mean,
yeah, if I saw this while I was inspecting gear,
this would totally pass inspection.
That's not a good thing.
I like carabiners that fail inspection like this one.
I can't believe that pencil is still in the game.
You've got to be kidding me.
So it looks like this until I tighten it.
Is that neato?
It was the DMM.
We don't have to go looking for it.
Thanks DMM.
Oh, I can, it's finally functional.
I find a lot of these carabiners are not opening
because the triple auto locker,
I can't slide the locking gate up
because the carabiners will smash together.
But this one's still not opening.
I don't know what would have caused this to not work.
It's rated for 25, 25.
Super good enough.
It was the Black Diamond.
I trust my life to these.
It's definitely good enough.
You put more than 25k in on those?
Nope.
So Black Diamond's got the highest result so far.
How's our heavyweight champion?
It's still fun.
It's a little sticky, but yeah.
Right by the Crisco.
That's what I use for oil in there.
It's more eco-friendly.
Hydraulic, my hydraulic pump.
Um, 31.
Yeah.
Go Petzl.
Which actually, I'm more impressed with the other ones that...
Is Mad Rock in both of them?
Yeah, it's all that's left.
Mad Rock against Mad Rock?
What?
Is that still functioning now that we've been above 30?
Yeah.
Less well.
Less well?
What is another word for that?
Would not pass inspection.
Pretty nice.
You're going to notice a theme in this video.
All of the ones next to the dynos broke first.
Oh, that must be...
We see a pattern.
That must be science.
Uh, yes.
Or it could have been the order in which we put these in.
There was a conspiracy.
All the weak ones were next to the dynos.
So in our last video, everyone thought it was on the piston side
that was the cause of them breaking more consistently on that side.
The small Mad Rock lost.
The gate...
The gate sort of functions.
It's still parked.
Gotta be kidding me.
Shocking results on how not to.
The one that was rated the strongest actually is the strongest.
It's actually rarely the case, man.
So that is shocking.
Now we gotta break that one.
I want to know what that one's going down at.
Yeah?
Yeah.
35.
35?
What's your number?
30.
Because that's what it's rated to.
33.
And the grand finale!
I was back there and I saw something go straight up.
Oh, this is a different something than broke.
It was in the ceiling.
Wait, what?
We found it.
Bounce back down.
Oh, you got your nose.
Yeah, the nose.
Does it still function?
Would it pass inspection?
You sound like an uncle.
Ooh, got your nose.
This would not pass inspection.
We do sell on extremegear.org almost all of these carabiners, including this Mad Rock.
And if you buy from there, it does help support us breaking perfectly good carabiners.
You guessed 30.
You guessed 35.
Was I right?
You said 33.
Oh, so we're all wrong.
Whoa, it hit.
Oh, it did.
Took a chunk out of it.
Yeah, yeah.
It home smashed the test bed.
31.88.
We've got a winner!
So we have a couple carabiner showdown videos.
We have 12 just pulled in a link.
And then we've got the bracketed system to where we just compete two and two and bracket,
bracket to the final.
Tell us which style you like better.
And tell us which kind of carabiners or gear that we can line up and destroy for your entertainment.
Don't forget to wipe.
It's thrilling.
We laugh because everyone does it.
Everyone watches YouTube on the toilet.
Killing my audio.
He's coming back around to kill the audio some more.
I don't want to use a mic!
Go away!
And don't forget to wipe and subscribe.
