We finally have our metal roofing panels so we go about devising a way to overlap the removable panels and scribe the back panels. How did this get so complicated?
We have an affiliate partnership with some of the links above, and may receive compensation when items are sold. This helps support our family, and we only recommend products we truly love.
I'm Ashley. I'm Jonathan.
And this is the chicken garden that never ends.
It's time to do the roof on the pump house.
Today, we're going to be tackling the roof.
So I would like to just start with the lower section,
which I think is the easier section.
You think it's going to be the harder section?
I think it's harder because it's got to overlap.
Yeah, but it's going to be a piece of cake.
OK, we have a new tool, a nibbler.
No, I got to get the generator.
We have a new tool that we're going to try
and let's just I mean, all we're going to do is put
roofing paper on, put the panels on.
Yeah. No problem.
This is going to be so easy. Easy.
Easiest day we've ever had.
But then we got to do the back part.
Yeah. Which is curved.
Also kind of really want to cut a little section there
that fits that piece that we're missing.
So we have a few things to do on the top section,
but let's work on the lower section first.
OK. And then we'll get to it.
OK. Ready? Ready.
Unfortunately, we're going to have to pause this huge storm coming in
and we don't want to be doing this in the lightning.
Why can we not just get stuff done?
This season has been insane and I'm over it.
Just want to get things done.
But we're going to go ahead and put this up and see if we can work on it
later when there's not lightning. All right.
OK, I think the storm has passed for now,
so we're going to try to make some more progress.
Well, we learned how to use a nibbler.
Nine. Hi, buddy.
OK, so what we have done, we have gone ahead and screwed down this bottom panel
except for where they overlap, because we need to be able to take them apart.
It's very complicated.
So the next step, I think, is going to be removing this.
Yeah, I'm going to get in there.
Yeah, we're going to scribe a little piece that will fit in the middle of that top.
Because it's bothering.
Yeah, it's bothering me.
And it needs to be sealed up anyway.
So we're going to scribe that.
Once I get that installed, we can put the roof paper on.
Once the roof paper's on, we're going to stitch screw the panels together.
Then I'm going to mark where I'm going to scribe it.
And then I'm going to cut it and hope for the best.
And you're what we're going to do is is make all those panels
one big, one big piece so that we can scribe the curve in one go.
Yeah. So why we have this gap on this plywood is because we cut it in half
and then scribed individually, and it just messed things up.
So lesson learned.
We're going to do it all in one go.
It's going to be more difficult.
It's going to be really hard to get that piece of metal off
once it's all stitched together.
But we'll do it. OK, then.
What's the worst that could happen?
We have to go get more panels and we have to wait a week on it.
Yeah. Is that a big deal?
I'd like it to be done.
Well, it's going to be done.
I'm going to do it right the first time.
OK, we got some practice on the first go.
Yeah. OK, let's see if these these panels come off like we think they should.
I mean, it's going to be hard because I don't have a handle.
Yeah, it's going to be heavy.
Yeah. Don't complain.
Because we're going to put a handle on it eventually.
All right. And it'll be a lot easier when I have the handle.
OK. You can get like a big industrial metal.
I need a forklift.
All right. Ready? Yeah.
So you're going to cut the plywood and what?
Oh, hello, little tarantula.
Piece has been cut.
We're going to see if it fits.
It probably needs some adjustment, so don't.
It's OK. It'll be fine.
I know it needs cut on the end, but it's pretty close.
Because mostly I'm concerned with this.
I don't want things going in this, you know.
So is that tight enough, keeping it down?
Oops. What did you do?
Oh, you broke it.
Yeah, I can go upside down.
Maybe it's a different cut, but try it.
Job, babe.
OK, quiet on the set.
On the job site, on the job site.
OK, so another rainstorm is coming in.
We're going to have to pause.
I really just want to get this done.
It's so frustrating.
I'm trying not to be irritated, but I'm a little irritated.
But I think I think it's good because this next part is going to be pretty tricky.
Doing that that curve scribe.
Yeah, I don't want to rush through it with the rainstorm coming in.
So we're going to pause and come back to it later.
Yeah. The nibbler, guys, if you don't have a nibbler
and you do a lot of metal roofing, what are you doing?
We have heard tales of the nibbler before and the tales were true.
Yeah, it worked great. Yeah. Awesome.
Remember when we when we've cut metal with like a jigsaw and tin snips
and then circular circular saw the blade backwards?
Yeah. This is way safer.
It was so much easier to just like, well, yeah, no problem.
And OK, so we just need to put stuff up because the rain is coming
and we have to clean up. Yep.
So is this the end of the video?
I don't know. I'm hoping that we can just come back tomorrow morning.
Yeah. Finish this video and add that as a one video.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Yeah.
It'll be a little weird.
Won't be won't be the normal situation, but it's going to be day one
or whatever day this is continuing.
I don't even know what day we're on.
What is it? I don't know.
Anyway, guys, we'll be back
in the morning to finish the roofing job. Yes.
Good morning.
Somebody has some allergy problems.
I'm a little bit sniffy this morning, but it's not going to stop us.
We're going to get this roof done.
Thanks to the power of the Internet and YouTube.
We will finish this day on another day. Oh.
You're like, what are you talking about?
OK, yeah. So the plan is we're going to take these panels off,
put the other panels on the top roof. Yeah.
Stitch. Oh, my God.
You've had so many calls lately.
We're going to stitch screw the roof on the back together.
Put these back on.
Make sure everything lined up the way we want it.
Then we're going to scribe that roof and cut it.
And it should be real simple.
The scribing and making sure we leave enough hanging over
when we scribe is going to be.
Yeah, I think I got it, though.
I know how to measure that.
So I think we're good.
OK, I'm going to go blow my nose.
The only thing I'm concerned about, my dear,
is there's not two speeds on this nibbler.
It's one speed and it is fast.
Yeah. So I have one shot to make this scribe work.
I'm a little nervous. Yeah.
Well, even if it's off a little, we're going to do some caulking back there.
Yeah, I just it's got to be close. Yeah. OK.
Chop to it. OK.
Did I say chop to it? I don't know.
Are you ready for this?
This is one shot because
we measured it to where it overhangs.
We have one inch of play over the plywood that we put down.
So basically, I have one shot to get this right.
Yeah, I think we can do it, though.
Well, we went ahead and just temporarily screwed this down.
So that way, I shouldn't really need to hold anything,
I don't think, to get in your way.
Yeah, I can help feed the cord because the cord is really the most annoying thing.
Yeah. So the only thing I don't like about this is the cord.
We're so used to cordless tools,
especially the way it is now.
Like, I could turn this to where I would be doing it this way
instead of going this way where the cord would drag this way.
The cord wouldn't drag.
Maybe we should go get that tool.
You want to? Because I think I'd be nice to try it that way.
Yeah, it'd be a lot easier for me to like seeing it this way.
We could do that.
We're going to try the nibbler a second way.
I'm going to make a test line here on this panel
so that I can practice before I do the big part.
It's a good idea. Yeah, we'll see.
I want to see if I can actually stay on the line.
It's kind of important.
I'm going to stay to the outside of the line and see.
Yeah, because it I mean, it takes out a good chunk of it.
Yeah, it's pretty.
Yeah. How much is that?
Do you think an eighth of an inch?
A hundred, but yeah.
OK, I'm ready if you're ready.
OK, here we go.
All right.
It's the moment of truth.
Let's take this thing, flip it around, see if it fits.
You're doing pretty good.
This is pretty good.
Well, it's on.
It's lined up. It is. Curves good.
Yep. But we see something that is going to really bother us,
which is the plywood overhanging the frame three inches.
Right. And I think we did that just for.
I don't even know why we did that.
Maybe just to help us make sure we extended the metal out over it
so that it drips down.
Anyway, we can see it in a bother to us.
Yeah. So now let's remove these panels.
Remove those panels.
Cut it off. Cut it off.
Fix the underlayment.
Put it back and screw down.
Shouldn't take that long.
You don't have to.
I don't have to.
But we are going to look at it.
And every time we're going to be like, why don't we see that?
All right. Underneath there.
And it's going to drive us crazy.
Minor adjustments, minor adjustments.
It'll be fine. Everything's fine.
Ready?
OK, guys, I want to show you how full our tank is.
This is very exciting.
It's so full. It's at the very top.
So we're looking at over 1300 gallons.
It's just dripping out.
Yep. Right there.
Feast your eyes on the largest pump house ever.
We're just joking.
I think that probably when you add in the power and the components
for the pump house, it costs more than the entire other build.
Like the whole chicken, the whole chicken garden.
The bags are so cheap. Yeah.
I mean, we have spent a lot of money on wood.
So maybe it would even out.
But I don't know. It's a close call.
It's kind of ridiculous.
We should add it up later.
Also, guys, we have a few more things left to do on this.
We need to add handles.
We need to add latches. Yeah.
We need to caulk the back. Mm hmm.
And then there's something else to just a few little finishing touches
that we need to do before.
But I mean, at this point, it's basically basically waterproof.
I mean, the caulking on the back.
Also, we need to get that foam, too. Yeah.
So a few more things left to do.
But guys, we are so close and these bugs are incredible. Yeah.
So we're just going to call it for today.
Yeah. And we're going to come back
hopefully soon and do all these other little finishing touches.
Hey, babe. Hey, babe.
We made a roof. We did.
Like, do you remember how much sleep I lost?
I know. You were very stressed.
It turned out. It turned out good.
I like it. It looks good.
I feel good about it. Good. OK.
Is that it? Yeah, I think so.
All right, guys. We'll see you tomorrow.
