What's up everyone?
Today we're gonna show you how to do
a single arm overhead dumbbell tricep extension.
It's a mouthful, but let's jump right into it.
So starting off, you're gonna be using
significantly lower weight than you would
for a regular overhead extension with both arms, right?
But this is great because it isolates one arm at a time.
So jumping into it, I'm gonna start with a 15 pounder here.
And what we're gonna do is we're just gonna place
our arm overhead, have our other arm right on here
just to make sure you're balanced.
It's gonna remind you to keep your core nice and tight.
And then this is how we're gonna start.
You want your elbow to be nice and close to your head,
your core tight, looking forward.
And then you're just gonna fully extend,
aim to straighten the arm up here,
and then continue to rinse and repeat, okay?
Once you get comfortable, start increasing the weight.
We're good to go here.
Once again, core nice and tight,
extending all the way up, bada boom, bada bing.
So when it comes down to it,
obviously we're gonna wanna do both arms individually.
But one of the biggest common mistakes I see
for any overhead tricep extension,
whether it's cable or whether it's dumbbell,
is just elbow flaring.
And so what that's gonna look like
and you wanna avoid at all costs
is just having your elbows out to here.
This is gonna put so much strain on your shoulder.
It's already so uncomfortable, even with the lighter weight.
So this is what some people do
is they have their elbows out to here.
You wanna make sure you're tucked, okay?
At all times, aim to get your elbow
nice and close to your ear, fully straighten,
tuck it out, and you're good to go here.
Obviously, I wanna balance out the other side, like I said.
And that's really it.
That's the only common mistake I see.
I guess the other thing I could consider
is a lot of times people just kinda pick
a really heavy weight and just end up doing half reps.
They're not fully extending,
so you really wanna make sure
that you're just fully straightening your arm,
you're getting a nice contraction,
your elbow's nice and tight, and you're good to go there.
