Whether you're looking for the best core exercises, cable ab workouts, or ways to improve your Pallof Press technique, this tutorial will help you get more out of your core training.
Coach Josh explains the Pallof press, a highly effective deep core exercise. Unlike traditional ab workouts, it is an anti-rotational movement where the goal is to resist being pulled toward the cable machine. By maintaining a stable posture and controlling the movement, users can engage their obliques and deep core for superior stability and strength.
Coach Josh here, your form expert,
and today I'm going to show you why the
Pallof press is actually one
of the best ab exercises. If you're like me and
you're like, how does this exercise break
your abs? It looks like a chest
press. You're not alone. It can
be a little bit confusing, but what's amazing
about the Pallof press,
it's a deep core exercise. So it's actually an
anti-rotational movement.
So it's not about you actively doing it. It's about
you resisting it. So when you're setting up
your Pallof press, the big thing is
you always want this to be in line
with your sternum here. So you can see when I
pull this out this is in line with my sternum I have
the cable set up just two to three steps out
here and right away from here this provides some challenge
if I were to go loose and limber it
would snap back so I'm fighting against this twist
and when I say anti-rotational exercise that is
what I'm talking about it's trying to get me
to do this so by me standing here even like this
my abs are under tension my obliques
are firing everything is firing I'm keeping this in line
with my sternum here now as I extend
the cable out anytime you extend the cable away from you
it's going to add more resistance.
Once again, if I went loose, that's what's happening. So me
resisting this is firing my obliques, engaging my abs.
And this is the exercise. So this is where
people will go wrong is they'll get set up
and they'll do this and they'll pop it out. And it
looks like a weird dance. I don't know what dance it is,
but it's a weird one. You better smash like
for that weird dance I did.
But instead, what you're trying to do is the 2-2-2 method. So what
you're going to quite simply
do is one two under controlled you're resisting that you're holding
it in this line we're not letting it dip out
of our sternum line it's a straight line in front of
us my abs are firing right now i'm going
to hold one two i'm going to come back with control one
two and the whole time as you can see
on the screen here look at the difference this is me
with my abs braced my core engaged i'm breathing behind
that brace firing through that paloff
press, fighting that rotation. And here's me loose.
Here's me without my abs engaged. You can see the
clear difference, and you can see my obliques firing,
my serratus firing, and you can see where
this exercise really shines. All right, shirt's off,
so you're stuck with me like this now, but I hope
this cleared it up. A lot of people give up on this exercise because,
truthfully, it is confusing.
Even myself, I thought it was a chest exercise
when I first started out, but I'm so glad I
implemented it correctly because it's phenomenal for your abs.
It's great for your deep core
strength for your bracing and if you're really trying
to develop a strong core a lot of people
don't twist enough in their movement
so that's where advanced tips like this change everything
so i recommend do like eight reps a side two
to two methods make sure you do both sides i know
there's some confusion there
