Hey, what's up guys?
Coach Jesse Minchin with Get Handled Basketball, where I show you how to play like the pros.
This is something you should do every day, whether you're at home, you can do this at
the gym.
I got everything in this set up for you that you can do it anywhere, so no excuses.
What it is, is a full ball handling sequence that you should work on every single day so
you can get a better handle.
That's one of the things I've seen make the biggest improvements in players because when
you have a good handle, you can create your shot for yourself off the dribble, right?
So you can get shots off at the three point line, you can get more layups off, you can
get more assists to your teammates, right?
All that stuff comes from having a good handle, so you can create a lot more opportunities
for yourself to shine on offense.
And also, I've had a lot of players tell me by improving their handle, they've actually
noticed improvements in their passing and their shooting.
Why?
Because it improves your feel for the basketball, your coordination with your footwork, your
feel for your entire body mechanics, getting synchronized, and a bunch more.
The very first thing I'm going to have you do is actually something without the basketball,
and it's because I've found this makes a major impact in your ball handling and everything
you do on the court.
And it's a quick hip flexor stretching circuit.
Every player I work with needs to improve their hip mobility because it will improve
your handle.
Go ahead and get on the ground, put your legs out in front of you.
Take one leg and get it so your shin is parallel to your chest, other leg straight back so
your toes are on the ground.
So like this, okay?
From there, you want to come up and back as far as you can, and you should feel a stretch
right in there.
Hold that for about 20 to 30 seconds.
Lean over the shin.
Do that for about 20 to 30 seconds.
And then from there, put your knee on the ground so you're kneeling like this.
Whichever foot is on the ground, put that same side hand on the ground and reach up
as high as you can.
Hold that for 20 to 30 seconds, and then repeat on the other side.
Now let's jump into stuff with the basketball.
Okay, so next we're going to get the ball bouncing a little bit.
Now like I said, this is something you can do at home.
You'll need about an arm's distance of space to do all this stuff.
If you don't feel like you can dribble at home in your house, first of all, you can
find a spot.
I used to dribble in the winter when it was snowing in Wisconsin with ski gloves in the
driveway.
If you can find a laundry room, if you can dribble in your basement, if you can dribble
on the sidewalk, find somewhere where you can dribble and get it in.
First thing we're going to do is work on our grip and hand strength by squeezing the
basketball out of our fingers like this.
So you'll see my hands come like this and squeeze together like this.
Back and forth like that.
So you're squeezing the basketball so hard that it slides out of your fingers.
And do this for about 30 seconds.
Try to push the speed on it so it's coming back and forth super quick like this.
When you're starting, it might be a little bit slower, but as you get better, try to
make it quicker.
That will get your hands warmed up and ready to go for the rest of the exercises we're
going to do.
Click that like button if you're digging the drill so far, and leave me a comment down
below.
Who do you think has the best handles in the game?
Let's get a conversation going in the comments.
Next, we're going to have you do some finger dribbling, a must-do drill that I have all
my players do.
Thumb, 10 to 20 reps, pointer, 10 to 20 reps, middle finger, 10 to 20 reps, ring, 10 to
20 reps, pinky, 10 to 20 reps, and then you're going to play the piano one by one, pinky
back down to thumb.
Key points you want to pay attention to on this is that you keep that hand wide like
this and the palm facing the ground, and don't use your whole hand to dribble.
Just use that finger, each finger that you're using to produce the power.
That will strengthen those fingers so you get a better handle much more quickly.
For the play the piano, you go thumb to pinky, back down to thumb.
That's one.
Do that 10 times, and then repeat on the other side.
From there, we're going to work on some more ball handling specific moves that you can
use in game situations.
That's the way you should be practicing the most part of your handles because that's what's
going to help you the most in game.
The next thing we're going to do is go inside out, cross, inside out, cross.
Hand comes from outside of the basketball, over the top, pulls it out, cross it over.
Repping that out, this is a good game-specific move, guys, like Kyrie, Curry, pretty much
every player uses.
As you get better at it, try to get it lower and tighter, that'll help you improve that
handle speed.
If you want to take it a little next level, add some footwork into the mix, jabbing with
each fake that you're doing.
From there, we're going to work on another very specific move.
Between the legs cross, NBA players use this all day long.
So boom, boom, boom, boom, see how I come upright down, upright down, and I always lean
into this direction.
Go ahead and rep that out for about a minute or two, and then go the other way.
One, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, and you'll notice I'm getting my footwork in,
but I don't need a lot of space to do that, right?
Next drill, we're going to just change it up by going double between the legs like this
and floating.
See how I float it in front of me, and I make the dribble behind me quick.
As you get better, try to pop that dribble quicker and lower.
Push your speed on this a little bit, don't be afraid to lose the basketball.
Again, you can bring some footwork into the mix if you want.
If you don't got a lot of room to work with or you're new to it, go ahead and keep those
feet stationary for beginners.
Again, do that for about 30 seconds to a minute, and then the other side.
Boom, boom, boom, boom.
Okay, working on that rhythm, great go-to move.
You see a lot of NBA guys doing this as set-up type move to break their defender down.
Next, we're going to do what I just kind of did there, inside out into a reverse between
the legs snatch back.
So boom, pulling it back, stepping out, pulling it back.
So whichever hand's doing the inside out, step forward with that foot, pull it between
the legs back.
Boom, back.
Okay, repping that out, you'll get a good workout from that because you're getting a
little bit bigger step.
Big key on that is that you take a nice long step with that.
That's how you'll send defenders flying in games.
Last two drills, we're going to shuffle side to side crossover.
So almost like your defensive shuffle, planting hard every time you come out.
Boom, boom, out.
And we're just adding crossovers into that.
So it's going to look like this, boom, boom.
See how I also move my shoulders into that to help sell the fake?
Again, if you don't have as much room to work with, you don't have to go really big side
to side.
It could be a little tighter, or you could do it a little bit more forward, okay?
So you don't have to use as much space, but you could still take bigger steps.
Just to work on selling those fake, again, rep that elbow 30 seconds to a minute.
Before I get into the final drill, I want to let you know after this, I have actually
got another complete workout that you can do at home.
Let's jump into this last drill, though.
It's an inside out and do it between the legs.
Boom, boom.
And you can play around with the footwork with this, right?
See how I keep my feet a little more apart and scissored for this version?
Or I can step across to sell a fake that way.
Go ahead and play around with it.
That's one way to take it next level and really see some improvements quickly.
Again, 30 seconds to a minute for that.
