WILL THEY RUN Junkyard First Starts After Years of Sitting
Hey guys this is Dylan. Real quick just wanted to explain what this video is all about. A few months
ago Kevin from Junkyard Digs and Luke from Thunderhead 289 came over and we all revived
a 1970 Plymouth Satellite from a junkyard. The first video is on Kevin's channel and the second
one was on mine. We decided let's not stop there. Directly after those videos we ended up going and
reviving some more cars but the point of this one was to do a lightning round situation. We're going
to go through a gallon of gas, electric fuel pump, and a hot battery, a couple basic hand tools,
and some wire and see how many cars we can get running within the end of the day. Some didn't
make it, some did, which is why we call them lightning rounds. If it didn't make it go on to
the next one. Keep going. It was a lot of fun and I appreciate the guys coming down to hang out with
me that day. This is way back in September so it's been a long time since this video was recorded
but you'll see that we had a lot of fun that day and we're hopefully all going to hang out again
soon. But I want to make sure you guys go like, comment, subscribe not only onto my videos but
Kevin and Luke. That's Junkyard Digs and Thunderhead 289 and go ahead subscribe to Classic Mustangs
429 because he's a part of our group as well and he'll be in some videos soon. But anyways
here's the video guys. Thank you so much for watching and let's get it going.
Lightning round, round one on my channel. Check it out other rounds on Junkyard Digs.
We're gonna get this jeep over here in the corner running or at least try to. Here's the guy who's
gonna make it run right now. Thunderhead 289. Dylan tell us what we're looking at. We're looking at
this looks like I'd say mid 70s CJ5. Has an inline six like an AMC would and it actually
looked pretty good on the inside. I don't even know if it has a key in it though. Does that have a key?
Where are the keys in this thing? No key. Oh god gee whiz that was a huge spider. He said gee whiz.
Watch your mouth. That's not a hood support. It just folds back. It just goes all the way back?
Oh my god it's the world war ii war. Second world war. That actually has a name. World war ii war.
So Mr. McCool you said there is no key. There's no key but I wondered if we could
hot wire it. Go get a jumper wire in your wire strippers. We'll be done with this in literally
like five minutes. Drop the battery in see if it cranks longer. Yeah. Luke is going to change the
battery here. I'm going to disconnect the fuel line and then we'll run it to wherever our gas
jug went. I have no idea but then we'll try and turn it over see if it'll run. Okay ladies and
gentlemen how to start a car that doesn't have a key. That's that's the PC way to say that. Yes.
Don't steal. It's bad for your health. Depends where you're stealing from. All right so Mr.
McCool and all your expertise you have a fuel system rigged up for us I believe correct?
We'll set up a fuel pump here into our gas jug. Try and true method here. We'll just take quick
and dirty straight to the inline. And is this a this is a return system? Yeah it's got a return
on it. That's awesome. I didn't think I'd have that on my good cars. I just unhooked this fuel line here and
rigged it in here tighten up that. Yeah. Oh I hit the spider web. Look at this. This car still works.
Oh yeah. All the nice little compressions of the era. Yeah. So this doesn't have much
for uh moisture in the engine just because I can still open this. She's clicking. Actuate
everything. It's clicking. It sounds like the coil is clicking. Unless it means it's getting.
Unless you wired it wrong again. Make sure it's not in gear.
It is a manual. I'm gonna put. Do you have a key? Uh no I don't have a key. Oh wait yeah I do.
There's a key on the floor. What? Unhot wire that sucker. Oh yeah forget about this.
Here Dylan. Junk. I'm going to hit the key. All right ready? Do it. Let's check. Let's check it.
It was the battery clicking. Oh. Fastest way to see will this run on a lightning round.
Pump that a few times. This moves. There's a mosquito on your face so. Perfect. Make sure
your choke's open. There's not gonna be a lot of moisture in the engine. Just look inside. Yeah
it's an engine. There's an engine in there guys. Oil dipstick. I think it's on that side. I have
thorns stuck in me. Uh Dylan do you know where? The dipstick. Oh. I'm looking at two right here.
The stick of dip. There we go. There it is. Oh. And the verdict is. Oh dude look it's
it's mint. It looks brand new. Let me focus on that. That looks. Wow. Cool. Somebody changed
the oil and they parked it. It never started or ran. Insert carburetor problems here.
It has a brand new starter on it too pretty much. It started like brand new. It's great.
Here you go. Don't hook them up backwards. It'll fill the the bucket with engine.
She's making some noise. It's a one barrel so you don't have an accelerator pump as far as I know.
No you do. It works. Oh how about that? We have pumpy. Oh this is probably a solid rig.
Turn the key. Turn the key. Come run the throttle Mr. Finley or Mr. Thunderhead.
Yeah I know. I bumped it. Oh the horn doesn't work. Oh there's a big old spider on there eh?
Be gone Satan. Okay. All right. Are we ready? Hit it. Brakes are probably locked up on it.
What's your brake pedal feel like? It tried to move. I think the brakes are locked up or
something. Yeah I think our brakes are stuck. Oh. So probably the best part about this thing
was that it was idling. I know it was incredible. So honestly it looked like this thing was
basically driven here. Somebody got tired of I guess just stored it here and this is where it's
sad. The oil looked brand new. It had a brand new starter on it and the fuel pump works. It just
dumped fresh gas all over the place so we're really expecting that. That's a first. We probably
could have ran it on the old fuel line. Probably. The fuel looked relatively you know clean-ish.
It wouldn't move. I don't know why. It would sit there and the wheels would just spin and
act like they were locked up. So all in all I like it. I wish that I could drive this thing
out of here. Check out the seats. That's like a later model seat right there. It's a really clean
rig really. I mean it hasn't lost its vinyl top yet. Which is hard. That's definitely something
worth saying because every single one of them I've seen the vinyl top is gone. It's starting
to start to lose the back which is sad because it's so good. But this thing I don't know what
year it is. I think it's it's mid-70s but a CJ5. It makes me think of the one I used to have.
But the body mounts are really bad to rust and those look pretty solid. So it ran. It's a clean
old rig. Clean old rig. My next choice is the Javelin. I've never actually worked on one of
these things so I don't really know what to expect with it. Just look out for snakes.
Danger ropes. Hey there might be a hood release on the inside.
I don't know what year of Javelin this is but it's like a I think it's a 72 or 3.
Where they at?
That's a lot. I'm gonna go for it. Where they at? I think it's that thing. That's the parking
no right next to it. Oh that one's angry.
We're gonna die. This one's pissed.
Oh yeah that's they'll keep them in the door jam. Yeah there's one after Luke.
I don't know. Okay one down.
That's not the hood release? I don't know what is. I don't know how to AMC.
That was that was good content. What if I told you I wasn't recording we had to do it all over?
No I was just look at it. Pile of hornets comes out. Oh look at that minty oil filter.
I'm gonna be junkyard digs. It'll run.
It will. This thing was restored with a rattle. Why is there a hole? All right so lighting round.
Oil? Check for back behind the coil. See this is basically the same thing as that jeep we just
looked at. Oh yeah she's got oil. That filter looks new so this thing I don't think this thing's been
sitting at all. This floor is so solid. Look at the seats are mint. I just want to take a moment
and just appreciate these beautiful seats. All right mid restoration nope done. I'm giving up.
You want to turn it? See what it'll do.
Is it a bad starter? It's bad ground. No that's that's just the solenoid chattering
because it doesn't have enough power. Try it now. Hit her again. Where's the distributor?
It's over here. I don't think it has ignition. Do we have points on this?
Uh I don't know. I don't see an ignition module.
Look at that they just rattle can the engine. Yeah. Luke do you have the screwdriver?
It's restored trailer park style. Is this a screw or is this one of the quick release things? I think
you have to push it in and turn it and it's like a sprung. It's actually a screw. Oh how about that?
Interesting. Oh tasty.
Ha ha ha I went in my face.
Oh does it have any coolant eh? Probably not. It should honestly make me feel better about
it's predicament. Hello? I don't see any. Is there anyone in there? No nobody home.
I didn't see any spark. Does anyone have a dollar? Hold on we can do the screwdriver
thing on that coil and see if that's. Luke what? Oh before the points even? Yeah. You're gonna have
to hook the oh yeah just go to the block somewhere. So what Luke's doing right now is he's going to
jam the screwdriver in there and hold on to it and then grab the negative terminal of the battery
and we'll see if there's spark. Right Luke? Through my heart.
What he's actually doing is he's going to check to see if it shorts the block when the coil fires
and see if the coil itself is good. I didn't see anything. No nothing. No sparks. All right let's
hot wire. Um if you want to put the distributor back together I'm going to take a wire from the
battery over to the coil. Yeah I don't it might have just be bad in that way. Probably not. So
we haven't done any. Well the filter's still empty. Okay. Which we haven't really spun it
much at all. Good. Yeah that's a good thing. Thankfully. And honestly look this all looks
new. It's all new looking. Except for the you know the rattle can job. But I'm impressed that they
didn't get anywhere else. This would be a fun thing to race. You ever seen guys like rattle can
their pulleys and their belts and leave it? That is my favorite. That is when I'm like that person
they really tried. I did that on a wildcat while it was running.
I fainted one of the pulleys while it was running. I just
and it was gone. Junkyard Dicks everybody. It looks good. Ow. Dylan McCool everybody. Just broke
my teeth on that one. So Luke is going to take a hot wire from the positive side of the battery to
the positive side of the coil. If he can reach. If he can reach. He made this for what did you
make this for earlier? The jeep and then we found the key. Exactly but this one has a key but we're
not getting any spark to the coil. I didn't see any spark did you? We could rob one off of something
else but. Yeah the jeep is good. Because we know it's it's interrupting the the ground like it's
supposed to in the distributor so it's not that. Right. So I mean it should be doing something.
Let's come back to it and we'll go to something else. This is a fail for the time being. I honestly
think it'll run. We'll come back in the end. Because it's a fake mopar right? A fauxpar. Fauxpar. Oh fauxpar. I like it. I like that. Not fired.
Fail. So yeah maybe maybe Mitch McCool will come back to this one someday without us or maybe we'll
do it today. You'll have to keep watching to find out. When we first got here I spotted this dart
and I really want to try it out. It's an inline six slant six here. We got a post car
two door. Pretty solid body except for the quarters there. I instantly fell in love with
it. It's a 68. Let's get it. Let's see what we can do with this one. Lightning rounds baby. Oh boy.
Yeah a little slanty. We got the single barrel holly. Not stuck. Not kind of. There's no return
spring on it. Little gummy. And any cup holders or center consoles. This will be easy. Oh but
it's been on the on position the whole time. Oh well the battery's dead. Yeah.
Can't start it now. This whole car looks like it's been in a fire. I've never seen that happen before.
That's weird. Melted? Yeah. Like the inner. The inside of the mirror is gone. The reflective
laminate is like melted off. You like that big word? Laminate. Laminate. Modulate. Modulate the
laminator. Across the panametric fan. I got nothing in here so. Oh look at that. It was the positive
side. Go for it. Try it. Whoa you got that. It's in gear. Oh it's a it's a it's on the tree. I
didn't even notice that. Does it? Yeah. That's awesome. Try it again. Oh yeah. Well try some fuel.
Doesn't sound super compression-y but. Well what's left of it. I don't like spinning.
That doesn't sound good at all. I don't know. That almost sounds like.
Didn't sound like it was even. No valve train. No nothing. Go for it. No she's moving.
She's a moving. That's why I'm scared to take it back out. Okay I'll take you back out. Yeah pull
that cap and see that rotor's all the way down. Kind of wondering. No it was not. Go. Imagine that.
Quick maths. I figured I'm like if it doesn't fit on something's probably stopping it.
It's turning over too slow. I kind of feel like a quitter but.
It's late in the day and we want to work on something else that's actually cool instead of
a stupid little dart. That's a pretty cool rig. I love this car and I think it could run if we
actually had more time to work on it. Yeah if you took that engine added two cylinders and put
them on opposing sides it'd fire right up. Well you know that's just like your opinion man.
Did you say you found one? So over here we're not ones to give up. The dart over there wouldn't
work so let's go to this dart over here. Yeah you're right the Mark 8 Lincoln 32 valve 4.6
Yeah that's what you want to start right? Listen I'm not gonna have you any. I can't.
What were you gonna say? I was gonna get really like serious and leave it in there.
Hey this looks familiar. Are those dead or what? You should poke them and find out.
How do they pop? I don't know I'm gonna go with it. Do they have gasoline in them? There's literally
their heads sticking out. Oh man. Dead. That's good. It's fine. Hey this one has all sorts of
all sorts of movement. I'm looking at the fact that it's pulled straight in from the gate.
It probably drove right here. Oh I'm sure it did. All right good recipe for a lightning round
battery filled fire. Yeah that's good. They got gasoline in it. Hey how's it smell? It's actually
How's it smell? Does it smell gassy? A little bit. Should we even see if this thing will turn over?
Does it have keys? That's a good question. Yeah so lighting route step one does have keys.
Probably. I mean everything here is so dark. What's the interior look like? Is it really nice?
The floor is perfect. It's warm in here. I don't want you to die. Yes it has a key. No yes.
This one's gonna fire. That sounds like compression. This one actually wants to.
This sounds like it's spinning right. I don't think the other one had any chance. No it did not.
Where'd the pliers go? It'd be really nice to use those. Hey do you have the pliers in
your pocket again? Yeah. When in doubt check Kevin's pockets. Are you okay? Yeah I'm fine.
Hang on. They're just enjoying the comfort of 19 whatever this is. Thank you.
So Luke's gonna pull the fuel line off here and do the tried and true formula.
Hook up our electric fuel pump to it and hope that our little Holley one barrel isn't totally
garbage. When are they not? Oh man the horn works. Nearly died. Go for it.
What's up? What's happening to the bottle cap there? I don't know. Ready? Yep. Hit it.
That fuel's potent enough to make it run. Yeah I think it might be junk. Try it. One more time.
Oh that didn't sound okay. I can't tell. Probably jello in there. Yeah it's bad. Do it.
She tried. One more go. It's getting fuel from like everywhere. The fuel. Yeah. And me.
And it's disgusting. Yeah that stuff's gross. You ready Luke? Yeah. Go one more time.
Well hey it runs. That's all we needed at this point. Yeah. I consider that a win. And if we
actually were able to, I mean we could unhook this fuel line but it would be way more trouble
than it's worth because that's just going to dump all sorts of disgusting fuel everywhere.
And we could unhook it at the fuel pump but I don't feel like it and I'm tired. So let's go
work on something that's actually pretty cool like this truck that Luke's going to work on right?
Yeah some dual quads over there. Been sitting for a long time. We'll see what she does.
Right there. Well I hope you guys enjoyed this video. I'm disgusted. We had a lot of fun here.
Basically the lightning round was go around and see if we can find something that runs
and I think we had a good successful run. Most of them did not run though. As you can see the
slant six was a 50-50 shot. That one over there on the other side of this truck didn't run but
this one did and then we got the jeep running. Everything else did not but it was still fun.
Thanks Luke, Thunderhead289 for helping. Thanks Kev, Junkyard Digs. Yep right there. That's me.
So if you want to see some more of this stuff go subscribe to their channels. They're actually
going to do a lightning round on the same thing and if you want to see some more subscribe to
me as well. Thanks for watching. I'll see you in the next one. And as you saw that's going to be
the end of the video. Thank you so much for watching and again I want to remind you like,
comment, subscribe not only on my videos but Kevin from Junkyard Digs, Luke from Thunderhead289,
and Mike from Classic Mustangs429 because that will enable us to make more of this free content
for you guys and we enjoy making these videos just as much as you guys enjoy watching them.
So thank you for all of your support. Thank you for sticking through. I appreciate every single
one of you guys and we'll keep on making these videos as long as we possibly can. Thank you so
