What Happens If You Shift From 5th To 1st Gear While Going 65Mph (This Will BREAK Your Car!)
What's going on guys? Welcome back to another video on the Autoblog YouTube channel. In today's
upload we have another interesting experiment on our hands. If you guys watched the previous video
where we actually managed to put my 1994 Ford Ranger in reverse while we were going forward.
I think you're gonna like this one as well. Now when I was planning the previous video I thought
the transmission would blow off or the clutch or something would massively break that I wouldn't
be able to drive this car anymore. But I can. So today we're really gonna put the transmission and
the engine to the test. Because have you ever wondered what would happen if you put your vehicle
in first gear while you're going 60 miles an hour? Probably not because why would you? It's an
extremely stupid thing to do. And I should also add that this is obviously a manual. It's a 5-speed
manual. Now the engine in this bad boy is a 2.3 liter 4-cylinder. It's not a fast vehicle. We're
gonna need like a long straightaway to even get it up to 60 miles an hour. So obviously I don't
think any vehicle is meant to be able to do 60 miles an hour in first gear. That's a lot of
revolutions per minute. So let's just get on the road and see what happens when we put it in first
gear while driving. All right little acceleration test. Oops that fell off. All right so red line's
at 5,500 rpm. We went all the way to 6,000 rpm. I don't even think we hit 35 miles an hour
in first gear. We'll try it here one more time as soon as we get a green light. All right first gear.
That was 30 miles an hour.
My max is out at 50 in second gear.
And then uh 65. But we're of course not going to do that on the highway. We're here
at my normal little stretch for these experiments. And we're going to get the car up to about 60-65
miles an hour. And then we're just going to try to throw it in first gear. I think that I will be
able to do this if I hadn't done the reverse while driving. I would have probably said that there's
some kind of locking mechanism. It won't let you put the transmission in first gear while you're
going at that speed. But since I was able to put it in reverse while going in that speed, why not
first gear? I would be lying if I said I'm not nervous. For some reason I've never been this
nervous before doing one of these extremely stupid videos. Here we go. Okay cameras are set
up. Turn this one on as well. Start it without a key. There we go. I mean if this truck survives
this experiment then I don't know what to say. I mean I guess I can make more videos with it. I do
have some plan. But I don't think it's gonna survive this. All right. We're gonna get up to
speed here. 45. It chirps when I shift. That is sick. That's 55. Fifth gear. 60 miles an hour.
Tires locked up. Like oh it applies brake I guess. Wow. I did not expect that. That is weird.
I expected the engine to just go start revving like crazy and then go. I mean this this truck is
insane. Built for tough I guess. It's indestructible. My mouth is so dry. I'm nervous.
What the hell. We're gonna try that one more time. I was going 60 miles an hour. We're gonna get up to
as fast as I can do it. 65 or 70. Here we go ladies and gentlemen.
Okay. Freaking shifting off. Second gear. It's uphill so 50 miles an hour.
55. 60. We're gonna stay in fourth gear. We're doing 65 first. Transmission is gone.
Transmission is gone. Yep. It went. You guys hear that? Oh yeah and it smells.
Yeah. Either the transmission or the clutch went. Yeah see. I let the clutch go. I mean it's in
neutral but. Let the clutch go in first. Second. I guess that's all she wrote. So I can't see that
anything like blue. I mean the diff has always been leaking. This here is power steering fluid
because it hasn't had power steering in a while. So that's been leaking. Yeah I don't know exactly
what it was that broke but it starts just fine. There's no lights on. No check engine light.
I'm gonna put it in first. Release the clutch and nothing happens. So I'm officially stuck.
Hey honey. Hey honey. I'm stuck.
All right I'll leave. I'll make it city. All right bye. Okay bye. And hopefully the video audio
caught the actual clicking sound that I heard right before it broke. So yeah.
Hello. Brian. I put the Ranger in first gear while going 65 miles an hour and I think either
the clutch or the transmission went on it. Great job. Thank you. Maybe we can get it towed to your
shop on Monday or something and we can see what broke on it. You might have broke the shaft on
the transmission. That's kind of what it sounds like. Yeah because I heard a click when it happened.
Like a snap almost. Yeah that's what it sounds like. It broke the shaft. So now we just got to wait for my
wife to come pick me up and then we're gonna go home. I'm gonna enjoy the rest of my Labor Day
weekend and in a few videos from now we'll dig into what actually happened to the truck. But
at least you know now. Don't ever try this at home. Don't be as stupid as I am in these videos.
There's a reason why I buy these hoopty cars. So I can try stuff like this out. So you guys know
not to try them out ever. So we got broken truck. Fully functional truck. And my saving grace. My
wonderful family. Bye for now. I'll see you.
