Building The Perfect Yamaha R6
What is up guys welcome back to the channel. Today's video is gonna be a
little bit different and it is gonna be on mainly on the street bike. So I've
been wanting to change the color on the bike for a while just kind of clean it
up. It's pretty beat up it's been laid down and do a few little mods as well
mainly a new headlight on the bike. Crazy looking headlight. So this is how the bike
currently looks. I really like the color but I rode it like this for a whole year
now. I bought it laid down and I think it's just time to kind of clean it up
fix it up make it look a lot better. So I bought a whole new fairing kit online.
It's a matte black and gray kit so it kind of matches that there and then the
tank will be like matte black. Obviously ditching the red seats going to black
seats and then most importantly a new headlight as well. As you can see there's
quite a bit of damage on the bike. It was laid down before I bought it. There's
some down there. This tank is gonna need some bodywork here so that is what we're
gonna start with. Pretty roached up right here as well. Since I don't want to stop
riding the bike yet I'm gonna just do some filler work while the tanks on the
bike and then whenever we decide to spray out the tank we can pull it off
and spray it real quick. So I'm gonna pull off this badge real quick. I'm gonna do
some grind work right here get it filled in and we can get it ready for painting.
All right guys it is game time. We got the tank all painted up. It didn't turn
out a hundred percent perfect. It could be a little bit better but this is one
of my first times painting so I'm pretty happy with how it came out. There is
quite a bit of orange peel on it which we could always about sand out later and
it's definitely quite a bit glossier than the other flat black panels on the
bike. I don't think it's gonna be all that noticeable because it's gonna sit
so far away from every other panel on the bike. In this box here we have the
new headlight and all the rest of the fairings that we are gonna be replacing
on the bike. So let's get everything laid out on the table, laid out on the ground,
see what all we're working with. We have everything laid out. We got the black
seats right there, a new headlight which I want to wait to show you guys how
sick this headlight is. We got the bike right here, all the other fairings and
those are actually the only other black panels on the bike other than the gas
tank. If I was to do this like OEM spec it would be the matte gray tank and the
matte black air box cover up here. I'm actually gonna flip-flop that. The tank's
gonna be black and then the air box cover is gonna be matte gray. There's an
actual side-by-side comparison of how much more glossy the tank is versus the
side panel and if we get it together and I don't like it I could always pull off
either the side panels and respray them to the same color as the tank or
respray the tank to try to get it more matte like the side panels. For now I
just want to get this thing completely torn apart, start getting all these new
panels installed and last but not least open up this really really sick
headlight and show you guys exactly what we got. I think I want to start with the
back of the bike. Pull out the seats. We have these side panels here and there
should be only two other panels to replace. That should be pretty easy and
then I'll probably move on to the sides. Last but not least, bang out the front
with the new headlight. We got the back half of it all stripped down. That took
about 15 minutes. Super easy to do. There are a few little things that we need to
swap over. This little rubber seal right here. There's another panel that clips
into that so we're gonna swap that over. Then on this panel here there are some
little inserts to screw into that we need to swap over to the other panel. We
just got completed with the rear of the bike. I do want to order a little decal
that sits right up in there. Kind of like the factory one has. Then we also
relocated the license plate to way up in there. It used to be hanging out right
here. Kind of ugly looking. Takes away from the back of the bike. Now it's
tucked away and it looks much better. These side panels should be fairly easy
so let's bang those out right now and then we can move on to the front end of
the bike which I am most excited for. I feel like the whole front of the bike is
just one giant piece. Pretty much everything's all clipped together and I
think to get the headlight and the headlight cowl off we would have to pull
off the side panel. Let's just completely tear apart this front end and get
everything swapped out at once. We just got the whole front cowl removed. I think it
is finally time to swap out that headlight so let's go ahead open up the
box and see what exactly we got. That is so sick. Being completely honest with you if I
hadn't run across this headlight right here I wouldn't have ever changed up
anything on the bike. I would have just left it how it was. Kind of all beat up, scratched up,
laid over with a stock ugly headlight but check this out guys. It's got like
the little eagle eyes or something. I don't know what you'd call it. Some sort
of dope eyes with the projectors. The stock are just like a regular halogen.
These have the projector in there and then that LED strip right there is gonna
light up and we did go with the red demon eyes as well so that is gonna look
so freaking sick. I think it would be sick eventually to get that LED strip
matched to the Evo so color changing with like some lit lights, color changing
LED bulbs in there or something. I don't even know if that's possible. Maybe I'll
get in contact with lit lights and see if we could do that. That would be really
really sick to just have the Evo 10 and the bike just match completely. That'd be
sick. I'll have this exact headlight linked down below. There's a bunch of
different options you can have. I went with the red demon eyes and the 6k HID
bulbs. I know you can do like 4k. All sorts of different color demon eyes as
well. Here's a side-by-side comparison. An actual good one. You can see how much
darker that one is and how much better it looks with the projector and the LED
strip. Alright so we have the headlight laid out here on the table. Let me show
you how the wiring is ran real quick. HID bulbs already installed. We have the
HID ballast. One for each side. We have these little LED drivers. Those are
already wired. You got to plug them in right here. Easy enough. One yellow wire
for each blinker because this LED strip right here is also a blinker so that's
pretty sweet. And then one wire goes to the battery. You have two ground wires
and then we have the switch as well which you don't necessarily need to
mount but if you don't mount the switch you will never be able to turn off the
headlight completely to where you can see the demon eyes. But I'm gonna mount
that switch on the handlebar so I can turn off the headlight completely and see
the demon eyes and all that so it's pretty cool. Being that we do have LED
blinkers already on the bike we do need to install a resistor which they did
include. That's what this little guy right here is. So if you don't install
this resistor and you already have LED blinkers on your bike instead of this
blinking it'll just stay orange. This is the stock blinker wiring right here so
that resistor is gonna jump from the brown over to the black and it'll allow
the blinkers on the headlights to actually work. So the headlight is on.
It's completely wired up. I mounted this ballast on the back of the regulator
right there and then on the right side it went on the back of this coolant
overflow tank right here. All the wiring was a little bit tricky to run. This side
went alongside the harness. I just zip tied it up. The left side kind of went
inside the fork with that harness and then we have two HID wires on the
outside. So just make sure if you're gonna do this you can turn the bars and
the forks aren't gonna hit any of the wiring. So I'm gonna work on getting the
front cowl back on. We got to get a bunch of stuff flipped over. I just want to get
the new setup assembled like this and we can slip this back on over the
headlight and see how everything looks. Okay so we got the bike about 90% done
but as you can see the tank is so much more glossy than that side fairing. So
that's the only other flat black panel on the bike is that lower fairing down
there. And look at the tank. Look at the fairing. That is way too glossy. So I
think I'm gonna respray it but I'm gonna try something else first. I'm gonna try
to first of all wet sand all this orange peel out of here. Get it a lot more flat
looking and then just hit it with like some really really fine scotch brite and
see if we can get it just a nice flat look without looking all scuffed up. I
think it's worth a shot because either way we're gonna respray it. So I'm gonna
do just a little area down here and see what happens. Other than that though I'm
really digging how the spike is coming out. This headlight was definitely a game
changer. I'll fire it up here in a second and show you guys what it looks like. But
I think I may pull the red pinstriping off of the wheels because it's not
really matching anything anymore. I guess we could throw the red seats back on it.
That red with the matte black and matte gray may look pretty sick. Yeah for now
we gotta figure out what to do with this gas tank. So we tried wet sanding it with
1500. We tried the red scotch brite method to kind of scuff it up a little
bit. Give it a little bit flatter of a look and then it was just all scratched
up looking. So I tried to buff it out a little bit and this is what ended up
happening. Yep we burned through. Sanded right through the edge. I kind of figured
it was gonna happen. I was hoping that we could just wet sand the whole tank to
where we got all the orange peel out and then maybe just do like a flat or a matte
clear coat over it. But I think I'm just gonna go back to the paint shop, bring
the bike, just ride the bike down there, show them what I'm working with and try
to get a better paint match for the tank because I don't like that at all. It
doesn't look good whatsoever. So as you can see we pulled the gas tank back off.
I've been trying to figure out the proper way to paint the tank. I spoke to a few
different people and I'm being told that if you just do a regular semi-gloss
black base coat then do a matte clear coat you will get that color. I also got
to thinking I absolutely love how the bike came out with like the black and
gray. But we got it all finished up and I feel like it was just missing a little
oomph. Like it was just so dark. So I have officially decided to powder coat the
wheels and we're gonna be powder coating the wheels the same color as the Evo 10
wheels and I think it's gonna look super sick on the bike. So let's get them
pulled off, get them sandblasted, get them powder coated, get the tires back on, throw
them on the bike and see how it looks. We finally got the bike 100% complete again.
Got the red wheels on it which I absolutely love. She matches the Evo
spot-on. We got a bunch of other stuff powder coated. That was gloss black. If I
had matte black or like semi-gloss black here I definitely would have done like a
matte finish on the powder coat. But I actually kind of like it black, like
gloss black. So here it is with the black tank. We got the tank resprayed again. I
ended up respraying that tank four times to get it proper like how I wanted it. So
tank's all finished up, the bike's complete. Now the last thing we got to
figure out is if we're gonna run red seats or black seats. Here she is with
the black seats and I'm gonna go ahead and swap it out to the red seats. I think
it'd look a little bit better if the reds matched. The wheels are like a super
candy red finish and the seats are almost like orange instead of red. I'll
keep both around. I'm gonna run the black seats for now but drop a comment down
below. Let me know what you think we should run for seats.
I honestly think I'm gonna keep it like this. So we have the black seat up front
and then the red seat in the back and I kind of really like that.
God damn this bike is so loud. So now that the bike is 100% where we want it,
there is one last thing that I want to do before moving on to the next project.
One last finishing touch. While the bike is still clean, I want to get it
completely ceramic coated. The only thing that we can't ceramic coat right now is
the gas tank and that is because we just painted it. Every single thing else on
the bike we can ceramic coat. I did pick up these little tank decals and the tank
protector as well so I'm gonna go ahead throw these on right now and then I'll
show you guys how to ceramic coat. It's actually pretty easy. Alright we got the
tank protector installed. Now let's move on to ceramic coating. So this here is
everything that you'll need guys. We have 70% isopropyl alcohol, a lint-free
towel, and obviously the Armor Shield 9 by Avalon King ceramic coat kit. I will
have all this linked down below. I do have a discount code for this. It'll save
you $25 over at AvalonKing.com. Let's go ahead open it up and I'll show
you guys what is included. Okay we have the ceramic coating itself, the
applicator sponge, applicator pads, and some gloves. So this is very very easy to
do guys. We are gonna be coating the bike panel by panel so let's say we're
gonna start off with like the side fairing right here. We're gonna hit it
with isopropyl alcohol and the lint-free towel. Get it all nice and clean. As soon as
it's clean and dry we're gonna come over here, we're gonna throw on the gloves,
grab the applicator pad, throw it over the sponge, drip about five drips of this
Armor Shield 9 onto the sponge, and we're gonna hit this whole fairing in a
horizontal and vertical motion. Wait about three minutes and then we can grab
this lint-free towel that they supplied and wipe it off. As always I am going to
be doing two coats on the whole bike. I may do the wheels, I haven't decided yet.
I think I should have done those right after I powder coated them. One kit will
definitely cover a whole bike. We can do everything including the fairings, the
headlight, the windscreen, the mirrors. Alright guys let's jump into it, get this
thing coated up. So I did decide to coat the frame rail as well. Simple as that.
Apply the coating, wait a few minutes until it turns kind of rainbow-ish and
then wipe it off. Go panel by panel and we'll be all finished up as soon as we
get two whole coats on the entire bike. Just like that the whole bike is all
finished up. It took about an hour and a half start to finish. As you guys can see
on the matte black areas it definitely did add a little bit of gloss, a little
bit of shine. We even did the seats. I don't really know exactly what that'll
do on leather on these seats but I figured I'll give it a shot and see what
happens. Now after you ceramic coat something you want to wait about two or
three days before you get any water on it. If you get water on the coating when
it's not cured it'll destroy the coating and you'll have to redo everything. So yeah
about two days we should be good to go. Everything we used in this episode from
start to finish will be linked down below including the headlight, the ceramic
coat with my discount code. I know this was a little bit different from what you
guys are used to seeing but I'm sure if you are a gearhead like me, if you're
into cars, I think it kind of relates over to bikes and you may enjoy the bike
content as well. I didn't want to make a series about this bike so I just took
everything from every separate day and just through it compiled it into one
video. I hope you guys enjoyed it. Thank you for watching. I'll see you tomorrow.
