The Most Insane PowderCoat Wheel Color!
This car makes me so freaking sad to look at. Coming soon, coming soon, I promise.
What in the world could we be up to now? I'm freaking hyped.
What is up guys? Welcome back to the channel and to another Evo 10 video. What we're doing in
today's video is changing up the car. If you guys don't know, if you don't follow Dustin Williams on
Instagram and YouTube, he is coming to tuner Evo and I'm also going to tuner Evo. He hit me up and
asked if I wanted to be at his booth. I'll throw the date, the exact date and time of tuner Evo on
the screen because I honestly don't know. I'm pretty sure it's on Saturday. But what we're
doing is changing up the color of the wheels on this Evo. If you guys follow me on Instagram,
you would have seen that I did a bunch of red stuff on like the wing, the diffuser,
and then the front cards as well. With all that red and with red wheels, there's going to be a
lot of red on the car with red Brembos as well. There's going to be a ton of red, but I think
it's going to look absolutely amazing. The color we're doing is so freaking sick. It's called
Lollipop Red by Prismatic Powders. If you ever plan on powder coating anything in the world,
hit up Prismatic Powders. They have so many colors. It's like thousands of colors. I'm pretty
sure. Maybe like, maybe I'm a little off on that. Maybe like a couple hundred colors. They have
literally any color in the world. It's absolutely wild. This color is so sick. I am sticking with
the same wheels. These are 18 by 10.5 plus 20 raised Gramites 57 FXX. I absolutely love these
wheels. I was going to change them up, get a different set, but, and I had those for sale,
but no one hit me up and wanted them soon enough. So I decided to keep the wheels for this car.
These things are going to look freaking incredible in this new color. Now I always preach that you
need to sandblast wheels before powder coating them. I did powder coat these wheels about two
years ago. I would say in this gloss black color, I didn't want to sandblast the wheels again,
because if you guys have never tried sandblasting powder coat, it's such a freaking pain in the
butt. It'd probably take me no bullshit. It'd probably take me four to five hours per wheel.
And obviously that's not worth it. I messaged prismatic powders and asked them, I was like,
is it okay if I powder coat over the current powder coat? And they said, yeah, as long as
the current powder coat is in good condition and not shipping or not like failing, I guess you
could say. And they just recommended to like clean them up, clean them up obviously. And then
sand them down or scuff them up with like some scotch brite or 220 grit sandpaper. Yeah. Let's
get started guys. So the degreaser I'm using is that super clean and that five gallon jug.
I have some in the squirt bottle right here. And then I'll probably be using,
I have this wheel brush. I sold some of these wheel brushes on my website a while ago.
Maybe I'll restock them someday in the future, but I'm going to be using one of these and probably
just like another regular wheel brush or another regular brush to clean up these wheels. The wheels
are all cleaned up. The next thing I'm going to do is go ahead and scuff them up with some scotch
brite. So I have this piece of scotch brite right here. I don't really know like what grit you
consider that. And then a scotch brite wheel on a grinder so I can grind out or something right
there. So I'll smooth that out with the grinder wheel. But other than that, I'm just going to
scuff up the face of this wheel with the scotch brite pad. And then hopefully from there we can
move on to some powder coat work. The wheels are all scuffed up, ready to go. There's no like
shining spots on them. That's kind of what I was going for is to just make them like a dull look.
That means I have scuffed up all the areas. So here's the deal guys. What we're doing today is
I think it's called a transparent color. You have to do a chrome base and then the red goes over the
chrome base. The powder coat system I have is like a very cheap, like $100 powder coat system. In a
perfect world, what I would do, clean up the wheel, throw it in the oven for like 10 minutes, hold the
wheel back out, let it cool off, attach the electromagnetic clip and all that stuff. And that
technically should be enough to hold the powder to the wheel. Unfortunately with the system I have,
it's not enough. You have to keep the wheel somewhat warm for the powder to stick. I think
what I'm going to do, throw the first one in the oven for 10 minutes, let it cool off for about two
to three minutes, spray the chrome on there, and then we're going to put the wheel back in the
oven. I'll pull the wheel back out and I'll probably let it cool down for let's say like
five minutes. I should probably test this out on something else, but I'm not going to. I'm just
going to send it full sned, spray the red over the chrome, and then throw the wheel back in the oven.
Hopefully it all makes sense. This is the first time ever doing like a transparent
two-step, two-stage powder coat job before. I've never done it in the past. But what I'm
right now is get the oven plugged in, get that thing preheating to 400 degrees. Hope and pray
with me right now that this is all going to go as planned because I'm kind of scared. I'm very
nervous to do this on expensive wheels. So the chrome goes 450 degrees at 12 minutes and the
red goes 400 degrees at 10 minutes. Both at part metal temperature, meaning when the wheel itself
reaches that temperature, we'll start the timer for 12 minutes and 10 minutes. We got the oven
over here preheating to 450. Before I throw the wheels in the oven, I am going to go through and
clean them up one more time just to get all the dirt and grime and sanding residue off there.
And then we should be ready for powder coat. All right, the oven is preheated 450 degrees.
I'm going to open it up, throw the first wheel in there, and I'm going to let this first wheel
go in. Let's go 10 minutes on the wheel and then we can pull it out, let it cool off for two minutes,
and then we can squirt the super chrome onto the wheel. So here's the powder coating system we have.
It is the Eastwood hot coat system. One end runs over, plugs into the wall. One wire comes to this
trigger right here, which we're going to hold down as we're spraying the powder. One wire runs over
to this clip. This clip is going to go onto the wheel and whenever we're pushing down on that
button right there, it's going to electromagnetically charge the wheel, helping the powder stay on the
wheel until we can get it in the oven and get it baked on. Over here we have the two powders. This
is the lollipop red. This is the super chrome. I have one hopper for each powder. Take one of
these hoppers after we get the powder in there and it's going to screw on to the bottom of the
gun right there. Air supply goes to a pressure regulator through a water trap and then to the
gun. So that is that whole setup there. We are ready to start powder coating, boys. Let's get
after it. I would highly recommend wearing one of these masks while you're powder coating. You
don't want to breathe this stuff in. It's pretty freaking gnarly. Well, it doesn't smell bad at all,
but I'm sure it's not good for your lungs. So throw on a decent mask. They're pretty cheap.
I'm going to grab the super chrome, throw into the hopper, get the hopper screwed onto the gun,
and we can get the first wheel coated in the super chrome. Maybe I'll just leave them chrome.
That'd be sick. Just kidding. The 10 minutes is up on this first wheel. Let's go ahead, pull it out.
And I, guys, I think the main thing I'm going to, don't laugh too hard at my setup right now.
So I think the main thing I want to focus on today is being very consistent with the amount of powder
that goes on each wheel with the amount of time in between pulling the wheel out and spraying it,
the amount of time it's in the oven, all that stuff. I want it to be the same on each wheel,
because I feel like if it's different, say, if I get more powder on one wheel than the other,
it's going to be darker or lighter. And I don't want that. Like, obviously I don't want a bunch
of mis-colored wheels on this car. So yeah, let's go ahead and get this first wheel pulled out and
give her hell, boys. Super chrome is stage one. Lollipop red is stage two. I'm freaking hyped.
You better be hyped too. All right. So I got, I got the wheel out of the oven. It's behind me.
We're going to wait two minutes right now, and then I'm going to spray on the super chrome and
then immediately throw it back in the oven. And what did I go for? 12 minutes at part metal
temperature. So basically what part metal temperature is, I have an infrared gun,
this guy right here. And while the oven, while the wheel is in the oven, I'm going to point this at
the wheel. And as soon as the wheel reaches 450 degrees, then we start the 12 minute timer. Does
that make sense guys? Two minutes is up on that wheel though. Let's go ahead and spray out the
super chrome. This little clip right here that I was talking, I showed you guys earlier. I'm
going to attach it on the backside of the wheel. And as we're spraying the powder, this trigger,
we are going to be holding down. And I'm going to start with all the hard to get areas first.
So inside the spokes, inside the bolt holes, all that good stuff. Yes. It's not been long
enough guys. The second I'm spraying the chrome onto the wheel, it is fluidizing. Meaning it's
just like, it's turning right to chrome right away. So I'm going to wait another few minutes.
So three more minutes because we already waited too. So five minutes total from the time we pull
it out of the oven and I'll see how that turns out. All right guys, let's give that a shot and
see what happens. It's been about three more minutes. So this is how the wheel looks right
now. It still did flow out even with like five minutes of cooling off. But guys, like I said,
I need to be consistent. So I guess I'm just going to wait five minutes on every wheel,
even though it still is flowing out. I'm going to go ahead and throw it back in the oven.
And as soon as it reaches 450 degrees, we're going to start the timer for 12 minutes.
Oh man, I think I need a bigger oven. That is such a tight fit in there that I'm kind of worried
the edges of the wheel are touching the oven. I remember having this problem and actually had
to modify this oven, like dent it out and lower the rack down to fit these 10 and a half inch
wide wheels. This wheel has been in there for 10 minutes and it still shows 388 degrees. So this
thing I'm guessing is probably a little bit off. What I'm going to do to mitigate that, to like
just erase this thing from this whole process, I don't want to, I don't want to rely on this thing
because it's probably off, is we're supposed to set the timer for 12 minutes when the real wheel
reaches 450 degrees. Instead, I'm just going to have the wheel in there for a total time of 18
minutes. I think six minutes is a perfect amount of time to go from what it was already kind of
preheated up a little bit to 450 degrees. In the meantime, I am going to get this gun cleaned up
and switch over to the red hopper. We got to get some red powder in this hopper right here
and then get this on the gun. But before we do that, we need to pull that hopper off the gun
and blow out all the super chrome out of the gun. We can't mix the two powders up.
So I'm going to do that right now and then we can get the red laid onto the wheel.
All right guys, timer's up. I'm going to pull the wheel out of the oven. Hopefully we can get out
without kind of like bouncing it off the sides of the, of the oven because that will destroy
the chrome. But we're going to pull it out and I'm going to let it sit for five minutes
and then we can spray the red over the chrome. Things aren't really going as planned just because
number one, number one, the chrome fluidized before we got it in the oven. Number two,
the oven's too small. Number three, my thermometer doesn't really work. So I'm
kind of winging it boys, but we're going to make, we're going to make it happen.
So we got the chrome laid out. Chrome looks absolutely amazing. It turned out pretty dang
good. I don't really see anywhere. Oh, it did hit a little bit right there. You see that guys?
Oh man, that sucks. Oh well, the tire should cover some of that anyways. But seriously,
like look at this, see this right here. How does it go to this from this crusty ass looking gray?
Like powder coat is some next level stuff. It goes from this right here to like super chrome.
They don't fricking lie when they say super chrome because that is some serious chrome.
What would you guys think if I ran that wheel on the car? Just that how it is. Chrome on the car.
Would it look good or is that kind of ghetto? That's beside the point. I don't know why I'm
rambling, but I'm going to go ahead and let this sit for 10 minutes. So I pulled it out at 515.
I think, yeah, let's just call it 515. I'm going to let it sit for 10 minutes. So at 525,
I'm going to slop on the red powder and then we can get this thing back in the oven and hopefully
it comes out looking like it should. In the meantime, we do need to turn this thing down to
400 degrees. Oh, and also since we're not using the thermometer, I'm just going to set it in and
let it bake for 15 minutes total. And then I'll pull it out. I hope that works. 10 minutes is up.
I'm going to go ahead and slap some red powder on this wheel. It's going to look sick boys.
All right, guys, we're already having problems. So I think I let this wheel cool off too much
because the powder is not sticking to the wheel in some places. So I guess what I'm going to do
is get as much powder to stay on the wheel and then I'll have to put it back in the oven, I guess,
and heat it back up, pull it out, spray some more powder on the areas I miss. And hopefully,
hopefully it looks good. I don't know what else to do. So this is all the powder that would stick.
Look at how much is like not on the wheel. That freaking sucks. This gun has got to go. I think
this is called, you can say like a single voltage or something like that. And it's like a very cheap
gun to do stuff like this properly. I think you need like a high end gun. This sucks. Okay. I'm
going to let this thing cool off for five. You know what? I'm going to do three. Let's do three
minutes. I don't really care if it flows out before it goes in the oven right now. I just need
some red to stay on there. So this is how it looks though. That color is freaking nuts. If I can get
this thing to look the whole wheel to look like that right there. Holy freaking crap. Picture that
game changer game freaking change. All right. Well, here it is guys. The powder definitely stuck
on there just fine. What I'm worried about though, is the powder being way too thick to
freaking dark. I guess we'll see. Nothing I can do now. I'm going to throw it in the oven,
let it do its time for whatever we agreed on 15 minutes. I think it was and see how it looks.
Whoa. Oh, you guys ready for this? I just pulled the wheel out of the oven. Looks absolutely
amazing. Holy frick. If I can get every wheel to look like this, this car is going to be
so insane looking. I've never had really colorful. Actually nevermind. I take that back. I've had a
lot of colorful wheels. So I don't know where I got the idea from. Here's the thing though, guys,
since we had some serious trouble with this wheel, with that red, not sticking to the wheel,
we essentially coated the whole wheel twice or like half the wheel twice, half the wheel
as one coat. I'm really worried that the other three wheels are going to be lighter because
they're going to have less red powder on them. So I guess what I'm going to do to kind of deal
with that situation is just lay the powder on a bit thicker and hopefully all four wheels match
color to look sick. I'm freaking hyped. Here it is. Once again, I don't know how well it shows on
the camera, but damn, I kind of want to set it up on there. It's still really, really hot. Still
super hot, but let's do it anyway. Guys, look at this. It is nuts. I'm going to go ahead and bang
out the other three wheels. What I'm also going to do while we're, while we already have the powder
coating system out and the wheels off the car is pull the brake rotors off and powder coat them
black, just like the hub area, because they're very rusty right now, especially the back. Very,
very crusty. I do want to powder coat the calipers as well, but I don't have time for that right now.
I don't know if I'll ever have time for that and I may change up the color. If I ended up running
red wheels forever or for a while, maybe I'll change the red on the calipers or something else
as well. But that's a very, very long process to powder coat calipers. I'm going to spend the next
few hours busting out the other three wheels. I'm going to pick this video back up in the morning
when we can go get the tires mounted back on the wheels. And I do have a special surprise.
It's not really special anymore. I guess you already saw the ceramic coating video of the STI,
how I did the wheels on the STI. A hundred percent, no questions asked. I'm going to be doing the
wheels on here as well. So I'm going to bring them in, get the tires mounted, come back home,
get them all cleaned up and then ceramic coat these wheels, get all that done. And then we
can get the wheels on the car and see how it looks. What up guys. It is now the next morning.
I ended up only doing two wheels last night or one after I shut the camera off and we ran into
some more problems. Let me show you guys what I'm talking about. Well, first off here are the two
wheels we got done. Same color, both look 9.5 out of 10. This is the first wheel we did. Turned out
good. Here's the second wheel. And here is the problems we are running into. We already knew
this was going to be a problem, but the oven is too damn small. And when I put the wheel in the
oven, this edge right here hit the oven. So now we have a big black mark. So I kind of just quit
last night and what I'm going to do is mod out my oven some more, I guess. I already dented the
---- out of the door. I'm going to try to dent it in some more and maybe I can dent in the back.
That's exactly where it's hitting. And hopefully that'll give me enough clearance for these wheels.
Check that sick modded oven out. That should give us enough space to get these wheels in here
without the edges hitting. And I even went as far as to vacuum out the oven. So it's like a
move on to powder coating the rotors. All of the wheels are done looking absolutely amazing. I'm
going to sandblast and powder coat these brake rotors using this powder right here, which is
silk satin black. Should look pretty good. While the brake rotors are done, I'm going to run in
and get these absolutely gorgeous wheels tires mounted on the wheels. One question I did have
for you guys, I was running red lug nuts on the black wheels, but now that the wheels are red,
should I run black lug nuts or red lug nuts? Let me know in the comment section below. I don't
have black ones right now. I have red ones. So that's what I will run. I actually have a feeling
that is going to be way too much red. What's up Bill? Like that color?
All right. The tires are all mounted up. A shout out to my boys over at the tire clinic for doing
a good job and not scratching anything up. So here's the plan. I'm going to head home. I'm
going to wash the wheels and tires. The tires are pretty dirty, so I want to get the tires all
cleaned up and then dry them off, let them dry off, whatever. And we are actually going to be
ceramic coating the wheels. I know that sounds absolutely crazy. There's been other people that
have done it and they say the brake dust isn't nearly as bad. I did do it on my STI along with
the brake calipers and the body of that car, but I have not driven the car at all whatsoever,
so I don't know if that is going to help the brake dust issue or not. So this here is the
ceramic coat kit I will be using. It is armor shield IX or armor shield nine made by Avalon
King. My discount code DVN25 will save you $25 off of a $170 kit, so it brings that down to $45
for one ceramic coating kit, guys. Go check them out. First link in the description box below.
So what I'm going to do is grab a little bit of this armor shield, put it on this applicator pad.
Typically you would wrap it around this square block right here, but it's kind of impossible
to use that block on a set of wheels. We're going to let the ceramic coat sit on the wheel for a
minute and then wipe off the excess with this lint-free towel right here, and then we can get
the wheels on the car. I did get one wheel ceramic coated already and the center cap back on. Oh boy,
I should probably throw tire shine on as well. We got the first wheel on the car. Oh my gosh,
this thing is looking better than I expected. Look at that. That is nuts. Well guys, here it is.
Turned out so freaking incredible. The wheels on the car look way brighter than they do off the
car, just against the white I think, and it is so freaking sick. They turned out better.
They look better on the car than I expected. The wheels didn't turn out better than I expected, but
on the car they look better than I expected, if that makes sense. So freaking sick. Go down in
the comment section below and let me know what you think of the new wheels on the car.
It's so dope getting a car done and checking it out, seeing it on the ground. It's so freaking
awesome. But the second most amazing thing is jumping in the car and going to meet up with my
girlfriend, Bobby. So that is exactly what I'm going to do right now. She has no clue the wheels
are red. I showed her a video yesterday of, you guys may have seen on Instagram, the wheels were
chrome and I put one on the car and I was like, hey babe, here's my new wheels. And she said she
liked him, but I could definitely tell that she's like, yeah, she definitely didn't like him. So
I think she's really going to like this. Let's go jump in the car, go meet up with Bobby and see
if she digs the red on this car. I got your note. What does it say? Are you sleeping? I'm sick.
You're sick? Why are you sick? Come look. Holy crap. What do you like? Yeah, they look really
freaking good. Better than the chrome? Yeah. Why did you lie to me? They were chrome. Why did you
say you're going to keep them that ugly poop color? So with this color you do, you have to do chrome
and then you do the red over the chrome. Oh. And they were chrome and I just, when they were chrome I just
put one on the car just for fun. And I just left it like that. Is that a lot of red? Yeah. Is that too
much red? No. You don't think it's too much red? Thanks, I worked really hard at it. Maybe we can put
them on the gin just to see what they look like. No. Can you appreciate it though? Yeah. You dig it?
Yeah. It turned out good? Oh yeah. Are you sick? Yeah. Let's go inside.
What do you think about Devin's car? Well, as if the car wasn't eye-catching enough,
now it just really just like pops. It really does pop. It does though. It's like, you know,
like that's an Evo in the front, but then I get inside I'm like, now that's an Evo with capitals.
Capital Evo. Hello? So after driving the car for a while, I absolutely 125 million percent
am in love with these wheels. The only thing I don't like is how much red there is in that
section right there. We've got the wheels are red, center caps are red, lug nuts are red,
calipers are red. That is so much red. With that being said, I think I'm a hundred percent going
with black lug nuts. I may change up the center caps a little bit if I can find raised caps that
are black. As far as calipers go, I may change that as well. I just don't know what color I would do.
Black would be cool and clean, but then you wouldn't really be able to see them at all. So
I don't know. I guess let me know in the comment section below. I am 100% going to be doing black
lug nuts and I think that's going to help out a lot. Make sure you let me know in the comment
section below what you think of the all red wheels on this car. I think it looks absolutely sick.
I drove around all day yesterday and got a ton of compliments on it. So I think a lot of other
people like it as well. Here's one more look. So damn clean. I cannot stop staring at it.
If you guys want to see this car in person, come out to Tuner Evo on Saturday. I'll throw the info
on the screen. I'll be at Legends Media booth with Dustin Williams. Come out and say what's up
to us. If you guys want to do any of your own powder coating work, make sure you check out
prismaticpowders.com. I'll have the first link in the description box below. Absolutely amazing
company. Absolutely freaking amazing powder. These wheels would not look that good without
Prismatic Powder. So guys, go check them out. Hope you enjoyed this episode. Thank you so much
for watching. Peace out. I'll see you guys in Portland.
