Hey guys, it's Helene Epp.
Welcome back to DIY Beauty On Purpose.
Today I am working on this beautiful wooden trunk
that I found at Habitat for Humanity.
And I fell in love with it.
It was only $20 and I thought it was solid wood
and I believe it's cedar that's inside here.
So I am super thrilled that I found it so inexpensive
and I cannot wait to give it a new look
and a new life and guess what?
I get to keep this one so I am super, super excited.
All right, so on the inside,
it's actually in a very, very good shape
but on the outside, it's been weathered
and the finish has been chipping
so I'm just gonna sand everything down and clean it up.
The edge trim around it, some of it was kinda loose
so I just secured it with brad nails.
The left hinge was loose on one of the screws
but I had to replace all of them
so I just replaced them with some newer screws.
I decided not to paint the copper, I guess.
That's what this is, I'm not sure.
But I just liked how the natural patina of it was
and I think against the, in contrast, I should say,
of the white that I am going to be painting it on,
it's gonna look beautiful.
I am giving everything one coat of primer.
This is Kills in a stain blocking formula
and it's just because it's such an old piece
and I will be painting it white.
I wanna make sure that no yellowing comes through.
I am now starting to do the first coat of two
of the chalk paint and I'm using
the Rust-Oleum in the linen white.
After I removed the tape, I noticed
that there was a little bit of bleed through
and I was able to remove it with a wet rag.
I'm adding a stencil to the front.
I think that just a little detail
to the front would look nice
and I'm adding it before I distress it
so that the stencil as well
would be distressed a bit as well.
I am now using the palm sander and a 220 grit sandpaper.
I am going to lightly sand everything
and then give a little bit of a heavier distress
on the edges and some of the details.
After I dusted it and cleaned it well,
I am now applying one of multiple coats of the polycrylic.
I'm using the Minwax in the satin clear finish
and I'm using a sponge applicator
which has made my life a lot simpler.
And yeah, so I'm gonna do about three coats on the top
and two coats on the rest.
So here's what the trunk looked like before.
Here's what it looks like now in my bedroom.
I am stunned at how beautiful this trunk came out
and absolutely love it.
I'm so, so happy I get to keep it
and I am now gonna have extra storage for my bedding.
This is it for today, guys.
