Coldest Night I've Ever Spent in my Truck | Sub Zero Degree Truck Camping

Howdy. Right now in Oregon, we're experiencing quite the cold front. It doesn't get that cold
up here in general as compared to other places in the north where it's regularly down below zero
degrees. But regardless, it is pretty chilly and actually tonight up in the local mountains,
up in the Mt. Hood area, it's actually forecasted to be between negative 5 to negative 10 degrees
Fahrenheit in some of the spots. And for whatever reason, I had the bright idea to go push my limits
and see if I can go truck camping in this absolutely cold, freezing weather. The part
that's actually making me the most nervous is the fact that this canopy that I have,
the truck canopy, it's aluminum. And since I just got it, I still haven't had a chance
to insulate it properly. So sleeping in there is kind of like sleeping in a refrigerator.
So I'm a little bit concerned about that. But I do have a couple tricks up my sleeve to try to help
alleviate some of the cold. I'll show you guys a little bit more of that later on.
Without further ado, let's just hit the road. Regular, please. Right now, it's 10 degrees
Fahrenheit and the RealFeel function on my weather app says it really feels like 2 degrees.
I was just outside getting some footage and it's damn cold. It's like to the bone chilly
with the wind just cutting right through you. I'm beginning to question whether or not this
actually was a good idea. I mean, I already know this really wasn't a good idea, but
we're going to do it anyways because life is about challenging yourself and pushing your limits.
This is a good way to do that, I would say. So that that I just put into the sleeping bag is a
sleeping bag liner and my sleeping bag is only rated for zero degrees. And supposedly, according
to the weather, it's going to be below zero, like I said earlier. So the idea with the sleeping bag
liner is rather than having to buy a new sleeping bag altogether, it says adds 25 degrees of warmth,
but I highly doubt that you get anywhere close to 25 actual degrees. I'm hoping that
just this with my zero degree bag does the trick. If not, I have my down quilt that I could just
throw over top for extra insulation, but I just wanted to explain what that whole liner situation
is. Don't worry, that's not smoke. That's just steam coming off of my feet because it's so
cold in here right now. Once the thermometer has a chance to actually register the temperature,
we'll give that a check to see exactly how cold it is. But for now, let's just see on my phone.
On my phone, it says it's six degrees outside and the low is going to be negative seven. Okay, well,
we're committed now. Okay, now let me just explain the thing that you guys saw me put on the roof.
Now, my thought process was this is an aluminum camper shell. Obviously, there's no insulation.
I haven't added any of the foam insulation that I plan on adding just yet. So I thought that to
give it a little bit of something just so it's not bare metal, I'd put a moving blanket over top
because the moving blankets have some insulation. They're actually very tightly woven, so they do
provide some insulation. And I tried to fasten it down with duct tape, but it's just so cold
that the duct tape is not sticky at all. And I just put a bunch of stuff on top to weigh it down.
It's definitely not perfect, but I'm hoping that it provides at least something. It can't hurt.
That's basically my thought process. So it looks like it's six degrees outside right now,
and it says it's 36 in here, but I don't know. This whiskey, this is another way to stay warm.
Cheers. This isn't that good of a whiskey. It's pretty cheap, but sometimes you just got to go
for the cheap stuff, you know? Since I knew it was going to be a really cold night, I didn't want to
cook on the tailgate because I'm not on that level of embracing the cold just yet. So I went
with Instant Ramen because you can't go wrong there. I've actually never, I've never had this
brand before. It's like, I think it's a Korean brand. It's getting pretty warm in here. This
buddy heater's doing work. Oh yeah, that's good. Koreans don't mess around when it comes to
Instant Ramen. This stuff is delicious. Jongga, the employee of the ski resort where I'm parked
in the parking lot, he came up to me, he knocked on the truck and said that since this isn't a
self-contained RV, I'm not able to park here overnight. So I have to move somewhere else
down the mountain, which kind of sucks because it's pretty late, but it is what it is, I guess.
Alrighty, well, I made it to a new spot and not a huge deal, but it was a little bit annoying that
I had to take everything off the roof, throw it into the truck, move down the street, reset
everything up back on the roof, but whatever. Like I said, it's not a huge deal. I guess it mainly
just had to do with not having a toilet, even though there's porta-potties in that parking lot.
So I don't know, it just seems like one of those things where it's just a rule to have a rule for
whatever reason. In other news, it looks like we just hit zero degrees officially. Zero degrees
Fahrenheit outside. 32 in here. It feels warmer, I don't think it's actually 32 in here, but it's
zero outside. It's only getting colder from here. So the sleeping bag liner doesn't actually have a
zipper, which is one of the drawbacks, I suppose. Oh man, that water bottle is toasty.
That water bottle feels good down by my feet. Let's zip this up.
The thermometer just hit negative one degrees, officially in the negative.
All right folks, wish me luck. Good night. It's frosted over like a freezer. It's as if I was
basically sleeping in a freezer. Yeah, the temperature is negative five outside. Just
dropped down to negative six. This coffee's really hitting hard right now. After a long night spent
in a freezer, basically, coffee's replenishing my soul.
All right folks, we did it. We survived. It was a very frosty night and morning at that,
but nonetheless, we have prevailed. Honestly, with that sleeping bag liner, it worked really well.
And combined with the zero degree sleeping bag, I stayed toasty warm. There wasn't a single moment
throughout the whole night that I felt cold at all. So that thing works really well. 25 degrees,
probably not. Maybe if you're really pushing it, but it definitely is good to bring your
zero degree bag down to a sub-zero bag, at least in my experience. It might be different for
everyone. On that note, I'm just going to end the video here. Thank you guys, like always,
for watching. You guys go out there and go on some adventures of your own. Live life,
beat the status quo. Y'all know the drill. Enjoy the rest of your day and I'll see you in the next
one. Peace. Mistake wearing these sunglasses instead of goggles.
