Our Pac-12 matchup, the Huskies of Washington on the road to take on the Golden Bears of the University of California.
Thank you.
It's been a really good year, a very positive year for the Huskies so far.
Cal won the toss, they deferred, so the Huskies are going to have the ball first.
Touchback, and so they'll start at the deep end.
Jalen McMillan, a wide receiver in the backfield, now he leaves the backfield and Penix will throw on second down.
There's his first completion, and that's the tight end, Devin Colt.
Their head coach, Kalen DeBoer, his first year in Seattle, has just totally transformed the offensive side of the ball for Washington.
Play fake, Penix looking deep, plenty of time, will throw short to Tualapapa who makes one man miss and a second broken tackle gets him into Cal territory.
They've had a touchdown on their first drive of every game this year, and that'll be a completion for a first down.
Jack Westover, the tight end, the catch and run, touchdowns on their opening possession for Washington.
That is amazing.
That's impressive.
Penix will fake it, Penix trying to run and he goes into a slide, so he loses yardage there.
Blake Anzalata's Darius Long.
Huskies would have been aggressive going for it if he'd gained anything.
This will be a 40-yard field goal drive for Peyton Henry.
The kick on the way, and it is good.
And we welcome those of you joining us from that Alabama win.
Cowell with the ball for the first time in their sensational freshman running back, Jade Knott.
Tonight, the right guard, so they've reshuffled things on the offensive line.
And that open field tackle is going to be made.
Jermaine Terry, the tight end, not even close.
So Washington's defense.
You watch tape on him.
He loves to attack deep middle.
You see right now Cowell is showing a too-deep safety look, pre-snap.
Under center, which doesn't happen all that often, but does happen.
Tualapapa with the carry, got close, but I think stopped maybe a yard short of the first down by Ricky Correa.
I think Cowell is changing their coverage on the back end now with this empty formation.
Third and ten, four-man rush.
Panics across the middle, just slings it in there for a first down and more.
Out close to midfield, caught by McMillan.
Yeah, when he sees that you're in that too-high safety look.
Now one of the best.
Is this a sign of things to come, that you can change things that quickly?
There are a lot of examples of that around college football.
And off straight ahead, and that's a first down.
And it's not good for coaches who are preaching patience in getting a program turned around.
Because you have some short yardage scenarios have actually been the place where the Huskies have probably struggled the most.
Pistol formation, Davis straight ahead run.
And that's a first down and a couple yards extra down to the 25.
Well, Cowell has done a good job of avoiding the big play.
Tonight going up against some of his very best friends in the world.
Tualapapa in alongside Panics on third and ten.
Panics pressured, will throw short.
Good catch, Tualapapa.
And he stays on his feet.
The knee, I don't think, went down.
Got inside the 20.
Took a big hit there.
But he is stopped short.
They're going to try a field goal here of about 35, maybe 36 yards.
Henry's kick is up.
And he's two for two in this first quarter.
So two drives, two field goals.
Maybe the Cal defense feels pretty good about that.
Absolutely.
More balanced offense.
Because if they do, he's got a chance to put up some monster numbers.
He helps pick up the blitz here.
Plummer, though, is going backwards toward the goal line.
And then just kind of flings it up and out of bounds.
Yeah, well, the five-step drop or the seven-step drop isn't going to work.
You got another different running back, Will Nixon,
the red-shirt freshman from Waco, Texas, behind Panics.
On second down and five.
Play fake.
And the dump down to the tight end who leaps over the defender.
What a play by Culp into Cal Territory.
Man.
Maybe the best in the conference.
If you saw game day from Eugene this morning, great scene as always.
Kirk asked the fans in Eugene,
who do they dislike more, Oregon State or these Huskies of Washington?
And it wasn't even close.
That's another dart from Michael Panics.
There is a penalty flag in the backfield, though.
Both soft coverage.
Two safeties deep.
Pre-snap.
Bears didn't like how that one was lining up, though.
So Cal calls timeout.
Cal.
You know, a little bit of that.
Two yards to 19.
But it's just 6-0 Huskies.
Trying to avoid having to kick a third field goal in the first half.
Panics over the top.
And it's caught at the 10.
Nice catch.
Jalen McMillan for a first down Washington.
Great route.
Great throw.
Great.
Shuffling around themselves.
Hand off.
And the gang tackle for the Cal defense.
Davis had nowhere to go.
And, Flynn, this becomes a passing situation.
Unlikely to have help over there in the middle of the field.
Davis alongside Panics on second and goal.
Panics rolling left.
Throwing left.
Hits his man in stride.
Caught.
Touchdown.
Penalty flag down.
So we'll see.
McMillan got there.
We'll see what the penalty is.
It looked like a pick play to me.
Their offense.
Pass interference.
Offense number 22.
15-yard penalty.
We play second down.
You know, that was a fair call.
That's their fourth penalty.
All of them on the offensive side of the ball.
So those count as those negative plays that the Huskies track.
It's second and goal from a long way back.
They'll dump it short.
And a good quick tackle against McMillan for no gain.
It's his first half in terms of the negative plays.
Sacks, turnovers, drops, or penalties.
Third and goal from outside the 20.
Panics.
Play fake.
A little pump fake.
He'll throw short the catch.
But the tackle in the middle of the field against Cameron Davis.
Iosefa's having a good first.
Early kick and field goals.
This will be a 34-yard try for Peyton Henry.
It was two for two.
And now is two for three.
That's his first miss of a kick under 40 yards all year.
Big win for the Cal defense.
Washington has.
Running back to watch here in Jaden Ott.
What do you see when you look at that freshman?
Man, I see a lot of the stuff that, you know, the legacy that we built.
Thank you guys so much for the time.
Oh, Tiffany, you're already in trouble.
Yeah, too late.
You couldn't jump out of that one.
We got the full, full Marshawn Lynch experience.
I can't wait to see it show up.
You said it a little more gently than Marshawn did.
Thank you.
Third and one for the Huskies.
And a handoff straight ahead.
Washington will get a first.
Richard Newton again.
We'll make adjustments to set the defense.
Greg Woods in the deeper one on this play.
Handoff.
Pennix waited a long time to give the ball to Newton.
Short gain.
It'll be third down.
And Tualapapa back in the game.
Showing pressure.
Are they coming with it or just faking it?
They haven't brought a lot of pressure yet.
And they were just faking it.
Just a three-man rush.
And Pennix, again, having a hard time finding somebody to give the ball to.
He bought some time.
And Tualapapa had a chance to make the catch.
I don't know if you'd officially call that a drop, but he didn't make it.
Yesterday.
Yesterday was Jack's birthday.
Whole new world here in Berkeley for Jack.
He talked to us about the differences between West Lafayette and Berkeley.
There are a lot of them.
That was a strike to Mason Starling, who made his Cal debut last week.
They think he's got it.
Cal might have lost another yard on that play.
It's third and 15 now for the Bears.
Two minutes to go in the first half.
Plummer dancing around.
Throws.
And that one is caught right near the first down mark, but spotted short.
That was not a very generous spot there.
Monroe Young with the catch.
He can't believe it, and neither can the Cal bench.
All right, Matt, we look forward to that.
All right, out of the timeout.
Cal going forward on fourth down.
Under two minutes to go until halftime.
Play fake for Plummer.
Rolling right.
Throws short right.
The pass is caught.
And then the stretch gets the first down.
J. Mike.
J. Michael Sturdivant.
First down.
Just a much better team at home than on the road.
J. Not back in the game third and long.
Plummer throws to Ott across the middle, and he drops the ball.
He had it.
He had some room in front with all that speed, and he dropped it.
And had he made that catch, he was going to pick up a first down.
Or more in every single game.
Yeah.
So they're five and two.
They've been high scoring whether they've won or lost.
They're going to be aggressive here with under a minute to go.
Completion to the sideline for a first down.
I like the approach.
Six seconds to work with.
Penix throws again.
Short right.
Another completion.
This time to Sam Adams.
Out of bounds.
Cal has played really well defensively.
Ten seconds to go here.
Huskies may be trying to get a chunk.
Set up for a last second field goal try.
Penix will throw, and that one is incomplete.
Sailed it high over his intended target pole.
So now it's fourth down.
And I guess you just heave one to the end zone.
You heave it.
You hope.
Penix, arm strength not an issue to get it into the end zone.
Three-man rush.
Penix is going to buy some time to let his guys get down there.
And now heave one to the end zone.
It is knocked away incomplete.
But Dunzey was there.
So Cal did a good job of chopping at the ball and making sure maybe
Daniel Scott led the way.
He got his hands on the wheel.
For holding out hope.
Please take the wheel.
He got a ride a few minutes ago.
We want to see Marshawn pilot the thing, though.
It would help if he got some blocking inside, too.
This has just been a tough, tough deal for this Cal offensive line.
Three straight carries, four on, maybe par.
To meet him and chat with him yesterday.
And he's delightful.
From Norco.
Plumber throws.
And that was a dangerous throw.
And it was caught anyway by Mason Starling.
And, man, I thought that had a chance to be picked.
Instead, it's a completion for a Cal first down.
Yeah, Starling is 6'4".
And he needed every bit of that to reach and get that ball.
And good placement by Plumber to get out there and almost pick up a first down.
Now it's third and two.
And in that part of the field where you figure Cal probably has a couple plays
to get two yards.
So they're going to throw it here.
And they complete the pass.
That's Mason Starling again first down and much more.
Jack Plumber.
High snap.
Hands off Ott.
Left side.
Ott gets tackled, tripped up.
Yeah, they're not blocking me.
They move on now to Plumber's left side on second and goal.
Plumber steps up.
Plumber on the move.
Jack Plumber is going to throw across his body.
Touchdown.
Touchdown, J. Michael Sturtevant.
Well, that will do a lot for your confidence.
Watch Plumber extend the play.
And Sturtevant does a nice job of moving to his quarterback.
Old Marshawn Lynch personality in him.
He's got a big personality, a lot of talent.
He's playing well tonight.
And the Golden Bears have the first touchdown.
No.
Not my son.
He is tall, lanky, and can swing it.
And it actually led to the two of them meeting.
And Jack Plumber sort of developed a relationship.
There you go.
That's how good the Cal defense has been tonight.
Penix under center on second down is short.
Hand off right side.
That will be Huskies' first down and much more.
Some tough running there from Richard Newton.
Field.
Still a long way to go.
Penix.
Quick hitter out to the right side.
That's the tight end, Jack Westover.
Now, Penix has...
Under seven minutes to go, third quarter.
Clock continues to roll.
Huskies on the move.
Penix throws left and just a perfect delivery there.
Complete to Taj Davis for another Washington first down.
It's worth repeating.
Washington scored at least 32 in every game.
All seven so far this season.
They got six here more than midway through the third quarter.
Penix trying to throw that screen.
Does throw the screen.
No penalty flag.
I think Cal thought there was a block in the back,
and it turns into a Washington first down.
Well, so did Jackson.
They get in the end zone for the first time.
A couple tight ends.
Motion right on second and four.
They can get a first down.
Huskies can inside the five.
Davis, another carry.
Davis, touchdown.
So Washington finds the end zone for the first time all game,
and the Huskies go back ahead.
And that was just really about the double team by the right guard in the center,
and then the tackle washes everything down inside.
Look at that.
Wash everything down to the left and all points.
And Penix moves out of the direct snap path.
He'll take it, though, and roll left.
The handoff from the running back,
and then he finds his receiver in the corner of the end zone,
Jalen Polk, for the two-point conversion.
Man, that was a nifty-looking play.
That was pretty cool.
I mean, you don't expect down here.
That was a pretty sweet play.
Second down and three.
Ott, another carry.
Ott stacked up, and he's short by a yard.
But he did.
Where's my guy?
He's behind me.
Penalty flag comes in on third and short.
Cal converts, but that could be a big penalty against the Golden Bears.
I do want to make one more point about that two-point conversion play,
but we've got to wait for what we're talking about.
So, now back to third and six for Cal.
Plummer in the pocket.
Delivers across the middle, and that pass is caught.
Damian Moore with the catch for Cal.
First down.
What a tough throw.
I mean, Plummer just got hammered on that play.
You know, they mixed up Washington and mixed up who was coming.
Better chance of avoiding that penalty flag.
Third down and seven for Cal across midfield.
Plummer in the pocket.
Throws, and he hits Sturdivant in stride.
Caught to the ten.
Touchdown, Cal.
Sturdivant beat his man off the line of scrimmage.
When you're in press coverage and you don't get the press, you've got problems.
J. Michael.
J. Mike, as his teammates call him, extra point up and good.
So, he's having another good game for Cal against his old teammates.
Number eight right in the middle of the Cal defense.
Second down, play fake.
Panics all kinds of time, and the pass is caught.
Another one with great coverage, but just a perfect delivery.
Torrey.
Washington had to settle for field goals in the first half.
Hand off straight ahead and a powerful run.
That's Cameron Davis for a first down Washington.
Tremendous push on the left side.
First down, Huskies.
Panics takes the snap.
That quick release and just right on target to Adunze, who cuts up field, gets a first down.
How about the end?
Big play here, fourth quarter, third and ten.
Well, this is an issue for Cal.
Receivers loaded in the boundary, likely single coverage up top.
Panics, throws, caught, touchdown.
McMillan got free.
It was the same problem to fill with receivers, and typically defensively you play to the wider side of the field.
So the short side of the field had three.
And the Huskies this year have the offense to showcase those talents.
Extra point is up and good.
A call, or it shouldn't be called.
That's the view I get weekly talking to officials.
And if that's the standard, then that was a good no call.
Yeah.
Because he did get his arms extended.
He got his hands on the ball.
He had a chance to catch it.
And so the hand on the shoulder was irrelevant.
Pressure comes.
Plumber stepped up and just couldn't get away.
He goes down.
Washington gets the sack on third and long.
After a couple of quick plays, that last incompletion.
12.09 to go.
Washington leads by a touchdown.
Big play for the Cal defense.
Michael Panics on the move.
Wide open is tight and caught.
First down across midfield.
Finally tackled inside the 45 by Wood tonight.
Third and two.
Cal shows some pressure.
But just a four-man rush.
Panics.
Little double clutch.
Now throws.
And he has an open target along the right sideline.
That's Newton out of the backfield.
And Newton makes a man miss.
Touchdown.
What a move by Richard Newton.
36 yards.
It's his second touchdown throw.
Extra point coming here.
And the kick is up.
And the kick is good.
Wow.
28-14.
Really only ask that guy to cover someone like that in the first 10 or 12 yards
or so.
But to ask him to make the plays down the field, that's a hard thing to do.
Second and ten.
A little slant completion.
And the catch and run for Maven Anderson, redshirt freshman.
You can see right there.
Shake to him.
Sort of the classic slot receiver build.
Play fake on first down.
Plummer is going to throw over the top.
He's got his man wide open.
That's Anderson again along the left sideline.
Finally knocked out of bounds.
But inside the Washington 40 down to the 35.
A little quicker and not letting your quarterback get beat up.
Brooks again with a nice hole on the right side.
First down, Golden Bears.
Assume you're going to get pressure here if you're Cal.
Tied in in motion on third and four.
And they'll give the ball left side run for Damian Moore.
And with some extra effort, I think he got there.
First down, Cal.
Plummer.
Backpedaling.
Throws and it's incomplete.
That should be a flag.
And here comes a penalty flag.
Yeah, he was held.
That's got to be a flag.
There with the coverage, but he's going to be penalized.
Well, that's a mismatch we were talking about.
When you have odd in there, he's facing a linebacker.
He's just running a little option route inside.
Here you see Bryce number two against six here.
And he goes inside.
There's no way that Bryce can handle him.
It's not on Washington, the penalty.
Fourth and seven.
Plummer throws and it's caught.
What a catch.
Touchdown.
On fourth down, Maven Anderson.
Man.
Wow.
Game's not over now.
What a throw.
Three white shirts there.
And this ball was thrown back away from the coverage.
See the three guys there backing away.
And Anderson goes up and comes to a seven-point lead.
Extra point up and good.
Now Cal needs a stop from his defense.
So that they can get in the right play, the right formation to take advantage of it.
It's the hurry-up-and-wait offense.
Get to the line really quickly.
Force the defense to stay in that personnel.
And then make your call.
The completion right side.
First down, Huskies.
Jalen McMillan's having a nice night.
Stadium.
Panics.
Still holding on to the ball.
Now deep middle.
Incomplete.
And it's fourth down, Washington.
In the backfield, in the shotgun and not moving very well.
Pressure comes immediately and he's going down.
Wow.
Well, the old problems for the Bears up front at the worst possible time.
And now the punt team has to hustle on the field on fourth and forever.
We talked about how good these edge rushers are for Washington.
And when they needed it most, they came up with it.
And the Huskies facing third and nine.
That was huge.
Great play by Craig Woodson.
Panics in the shotgun.
Panics will throw and he's got his man open.
Caught.
Odunze.
First down, Huskies into Cal territory.
Now there's a penalty flag back around the quarterback.
55.
On the left tackle, Troy Faltanu.
That negates the big game gain and it keeps Cal in the game.
Yeah.
Faltanu flagged here.
He's on the left side right here.
And he's doing all that he can to keep his quarterback free.
And then.
And they are going to give it to Giles Jackson,
who will get tackled after a short gain.
Cal trying to rip the ball out.
Jackson protects it.
So this clock is going to wind.
And by the time Washington punts the ball,
it will be down to maybe a minute 30, a minute 25,
somewhere in that neighborhood.
And Cal has made the decision.
Penalty against the Huskies.
And the Bears are at midfield with a minute six to go.
The throw took a hit.
Sturtevant had it go through his hands.
He had a chance to make the play.
Plummer took a big hit.
It's incomplete.
Second down.
After a view is confirmed, there's no targeting on the play.
Well, it's not defenseless.
That's for sure.
Quick drop passing game.
I don't think they had to do that.
They're in midfield.
He's longer drops.
Plummer just has no chance.
He's going to throw that one a little more quickly.
And a great reach and catch.
But the tackle short of the first down.
So it's fourth down.
They need a long two.
Clock moving.
Now under 40 seconds.
Plummer takes the snap.
Plummer backpedaling on the move.
He'll flip.
And it is incomplete.
Incomplete.
And the Huskies are going to get a road win for the first time in a year.
And for this Rebuilding Washington program,
they've taken so many leaps forward this year.
And they're going to get their sixth win.
Washington improves to 6-2 with a road victory here in Berkeley.
Was that four wins for them last season?
