Okay, so very quickly, a very simple shelter. It's got your simple tripod here. Zoom, zoom.
Both sides just that it's expanded wider for the length of my body and more. The height is about
oh three and a half feet max. I just added two other poles and I put a whole bunch of
debris first. You know branches and stuff so I can save on the boughs not to cut too many.
And of course you know there's still patches and everything. It's not like I'm building this for
for a week. Just have a simple cover. It's like a dome type thing. It'll do for today and
well more than today actually. I clean the inside so it's nice and of course it's a little wet.
But that's fine. I've got some stuff to take care of that. Well she's cold. Shelter's done.
Of course if you want to use this it's small. That's what you want to do. Have a fire so it's
easy to heat. But when you're not using it I'd like to stay out. Well I mean I'm covered here
with my legs and all that so I need to put a little fire pretty soon not right away.
You know concerning boughs of any type either pine, spruce, balsam fir.
This looks like a pretty cool shelter but it's not the best when it comes to rain.
It will be pouring rain there. Rain will be falling on my head but for wind just to take cover
even snow not too much. This was a quick thing. Someday I'll talk more about pine. Like a lot of
people teach and say well there's a lot of things that are false about boughs concerning shedding
water. They're good for certain things but shedding water is not one of their best.
Okay so now I'm going to practice shooting again because hunting is coming
like a couple of days. I need to do some fine tuning then we're going to relax have a little
coffee and have a quick meal I guess a little bit later on. So I got to get to work guys.
Enough is enough. You got to know when to stop because after a while everything seems to be
going wrong when it was going right. But it was a really good practice. I'm happy with it. Okay
guys you didn't even start the fire because right now I'm doing absolutely nothing. I'm supposed to
be relaxing. Okay so let's get this fire going. It's really not too warm out. I even wonder if
it's not going to snow. Okay let's do this. Coffee time. Let's get this thing started.
I'm having a lack of coffee attack right now so I'm doing everything quickly.
So I should have given this more preparation but okay come on come on come on come on.
There you go there you go. Thank you. Yes. Figure from this side.
Man I can't wait for that water to boil up for me folks. Gonna be some good coffee. That wind
is shifting all over the place today. At least not coming in the shelter. Okay let's relax here
a minute. Oh boy I'm getting excited folks. I see some steam coming out. What a great day
to be in the woods. What? Could this be true? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I was too comfortable there.
Where's my spoon? Here. Oh. Oh yeah she's steaming. There you go. Let's check her out a second.
Sorry guys I don't have you close this time. That's okay. I'm sure you'll forgive me.
But this is an emergency. Maybe you'll see it from there. Oh yeah. There you go.
Nice and creamy. Okay not all of it. I'm here for a little while. Save that for later.
Right so I know some of you will be asking. So I'll just show you those three little pieces of
obviously you've seen. And its function is just a simple backrest. You know it's nice to be able
to sit down. But as you're getting a little older you realize that a little bit more comfort
is needed. So very simple. You know how to lash. Anyway three pieces. One in the middle.
I put the one in the middle a little longer just so I can have enough support back weight.
And there you go. This is about the length. Oh I'd say from the shoulder to the tip of my fingers
the sticks. What's he doing now? What is he doing? Hmm. Well actually I'm doing absolutely nothing.
You know sometimes when you're out and about it's nice just to take a stick and just
whittle away with your knife. And that's what I'm doing right now. I'm actually enjoying
this knife right here. I am slowly but solidly falling in love with this knife.
The Harding. You know with the old wood scales. Actually I'm calling it.
There's no name for this knife but I've got a personal name. And because of the old oak
oak wood or bog wood. Black oak. I'm calling it the Ancient One. Or the Ancient. Not bad.
Got this squirrel wanting to attack me. He's throwing some pine cones. Okay I think it's
just about time for a little nap. I've worked hard enough. I know I know. A little nap just
before supper. Yep let's do this. My squirrel doesn't bother me too much. Well I certainly
didn't sleep. Yeah the weather's getting colder. But I did relax though for sure.
This little shelter is capturing the heat nice. As long as you're what I call in the heat zone
you're comfortable. And what I mean by the heat zone is about four feet to five feet away from
the fire. Depending on the fire of course. You feel the heat enough to stay warm.
Well I know with this wind if I go out anywhere in the woods it's going to be cold.
Right now I'm very comfortable. And by the way again I have to repeat myself. This is not a
shelter that is completely waterproof. If there's a big downpour it's not going to work.
I just made this quick. I'm out of the wind. It's capturing some heat. I would need
different work on it. And a lot more work actually. And even those pieces of wood sticking
out from my tripod that's a big no-no. Not worry about this one. But the ones going in.
If there's a big downpour it's going to follow the stick. The water's going to follow the stick.
Come down and if it hits a knot or a branch it's going to drip right on you. But like this
man right now I'm so comfortable I'm actually really lazy. So looks like the sun is
leaving me. I have this mountain house at home. So I decided to try it. It's the first time I try it.
It's a turkey tetrazzini. I have never tried this before. We'll see. Okay so I have to get off
my comfort zone right now. Put some water in there. Wait till it becomes hot and
eat. But for now I think I'm still gonna wait a little bit. Okay so while I'm waiting for my
water to boil I brought you guys in the shelter with me. So let me just give you a little look
and you'll see what I mean. Two big things. First of all there is not enough boughs in there. It's
not thick enough. Third or second boo-boo it's not it's too much like this. It doesn't matter
how many boughs you put. If it's not leaning to a 50 degree angle it's not going to shed much.
Look at the size of the needles. It doesn't matter the thickness you put on.
Water is going to drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip. Of course it depends how much it rains.
And third the boo-boo is these sticks right now are sticking out. That should not happen.
When you do cover you have to cover the whole thing so no water comes down and drips. If water
would come down and hit let's say this knot well then it would go under and drip, drip. So I guess
we'll just this is my view from here. Very comfortable. It's nice and warm. Just need to
for that water to boil and we'll start eating. So waiting for that water to boil and I can see
some smoke coming out. For those of you wondering maybe you're new at this. A lot of people are
always worried about water. I'll just take a minute or a second or a few seconds to talk about
water from the creek. Well you know as soon as you get that rolling boil that we call those big
bubbles we know that it's at 212. So it's safe to drink. You don't need to make it boil 10 minutes.
If you want if it's better for you you know let it boil a minute or two more but there's no need
because everything dies if I'm not wrong at about 176 degrees. You know bacteria and viruses
but of course you can't kill chemicals. I'm not worried about chemicals around here
and anyway I'm pretty sure that we breathe in more chemicals pollutants than we'll ever drink.
So look at that steam coming out. I'm going to go check it if I got my big bubbles.
It's going to be time to eat folks. To heat up a little faster but let me show you
when I what I mean by rolling boil. So you see when you see that you just take it right off
and what's cool about boiling water it's the only way that you can really visualize
and see that your water is safe to drink and I like that. All right so Turkey Tetrazzini.
Remember to take the this out of there so it looks dried up or dehydrated I mean.
Okay let's pour some water. I never really measure but as long as it goes over everything
matters. Okay I think that's going to be good enough and you want to make sure that you mix
it so the water goes everywhere. Smells good. Looks good. I think this may be a winner too.
So now you close her up. I know it usually says you know eight or I mean 10 to 12 minutes
but I always wait 15 minutes. So 10, 15, 25. We'll open open her up and taste it.
When I wait a little longer it's always always make sure that everything's
rehydrated because when you start eating and then you get a few pieces that are not
Yeah we'll see. This is actually hardwood. It's birch and she's just flying through this.
No effort. Love it. Okay time to heat. 26, 16 minutes. Let's see what she looks like.
Oh a lot of vegetables, noodles, carrots. That's what she looks like. Give you a little closer look.
Not bad. Let's give it a taste test. Not bad. Turkey's a little bit chewy. It's not like I
didn't leave it long enough. Of course it doesn't beat a bacon sandwich right guys?
So there's actually enough for two in here. So I'm going to try and finish this meal.
Enjoy the rest of the fire. The sun is gone now for sure and tell you the truth I don't feel like
leaving. Not at all. I could have stayed like this all night. Make sure I have a nice fire.
This is warm enough but we've got priorities so it's not bad. It's not the best in the
mountain house. It's not bad. So okay that's enough. Thank you so very much for watching.
You know this video is probably going to be a long one. Sorry about that. You guys that know me
it's that's who I am. You know sometimes I come out and I say okay this time it's going to be a
short one. You know five six minutes but I just see so many things. So many scenes. So many things
I want to share. It always ends up between 20 and 40. So I appreciate your patience. I appreciate
all that you do for me. You're doing a lot. Commenting all the time. Sharing my videos.
You guys know who you are. Big thank you. The likes and you know what just your company is
good enough for me. So hopefully next time I'll be hunting. I know some of you will be asking or
were asking about it. It's going to be very difficult. You're getting on my nerves a little
bit here. It's going to be a little difficult hunting and filming. It's going to scrap the hunt
but anyway if anything happens I'll try and get something for you guys. Okay enough of my babbling.
This is Mike from Bushcraft Bartons. As usual take care and don't buy this.
