Hey there, I'm Señor Jordan.
And I'm Lucas.
Lucas? Can you say hi to everyone?
Hola.
No, Lucas, I said that you need to tell them hi.
Go ahead.
Hola.
Why do you keep saying that?
It's Spanish.
Oh, it is?
Yeah, you try.
Okay, how do you spell it?
H-O-L-A.
Oh, so hola.
No, no, no.
You don't say hola with an H.
You say hola.
The H is silent in Spanish.
Oh.
Hola.
Sí, muy bien. Very good.
I've officially mastered Spanish.
Hola. Hola.
No, no, no, no, no.
Hola isn't the only greeting you can use.
Oh, really?
Really.
Hey, what else could I say?
Well, imagine this.
Hay dos mujeres.
Y están en la iglesia.
Huh?
There are two women, and they are in church.
Se llaman Rosa y Jimena.
Um...
Something about llamas?
No, no.
Their names are Rosa and Jimena.
Oh, okay, I get it.
Rosa le dice a Jimena
tanto tiempo sin verte.
Y Jimena le dice a Rosa
¿cómo estás?
Okay.
So Rosa used another
possible greeting.
She could have said hola,
but she instead says
tanto tiempo sin verte.
It's been so long since seeing you.
And Jimena responds
with another common greeting.
¿Cómo estás? or How are you?
So then we could say
hola for hi, but then we could
add some more flavor and we could use
tanto tiempo sin verte
and ¿cómo estás?
Sí, señor. But if you're talking to
someone older, you might use
¿cómo está usted?
instead of ¿cómo estás?
It's more polite.
Oh, well, what are some other polite things
that I could say to say hello?
I mean, hello isn't very formal.
Could I say good morning or good afternoon in Spanish?
Sí, sí, sí.
So if it's the morning, you could say
buenos días.
Oh, I like that.
Buenos días.
Buenos días, Lucas.
Buenos días.
And if it's in the afternoon, you could say
buenas tardes.
Okay, well, buenas tardes.
Tarde kind of reminds me of tardy
and you're tardy if you show up to first hour
in the afternoon.
Exactamente.
Finally, buenas noches is good evening.
Buenos nachos.
No.
Buenas noches.
So, buenos días,
buenas tardes, and
buenas noches are all nice ways
to greet someone in Spanish.
Okay, so Rosa could
say to Jimena buenos días
in the morning and Jimena could
respond buenos días.
Or in the afternoon, they could
say to each other buenas tardes.
Or at night,
they could say buenos nachos.
No!
Why are you so obsessed with nachos?
It's
buenas noches!
I'm sorry, I guess I'm just a little hungry.
So they could both say to each other
buenas noches.
Muy bien. And if she said
any of those to another person,
she could put their name or title
at the end.
Buenos días, señor Ortiz.
Buenos días, profesor.
Or buenos días, doctor.
Or buenos días,
señor Bigfoot.
Ugh.
Really? Hey, it could happen.
Oh, right.
And in some places, people will say
buenas instead of buenos días,
buenas tardes, or buenas
noches. Good to know.
Okay, this is easy, but what if I
wanted to say what's up to my
peeps? Please,
don't ever say that again.
What?
In Mexico,
and some other places, you can say
qué onda, which is less
formal and is used more with friends.
Ooh, I like that.
Qué onda, qué onda.
So Rosa could greet Jimena by saying
qué onda? Sí,
yes. Or Rosa could
ask others. Qué onda, gato?
Qué onda, dark turtle?
Or qué onda, extraterrestre?
Hmm?
Grrrr.
In what scenario would
you possibly need to tell an alien
what's up in Mexican Spanish?
Hey, I can dream, can't I?
Okay, fine.
Adiós, dream boy.
Hey, you didn't teach me that one yet.
Okay, well,
since Lucas is gone now, let's see how
you're doing. True or false?
Hi in Spanish is
hola. False.
It's hola, remember the H is silent
in Spanish. Which
phrase would I use if I haven't
seen someone in a while?
Tanto tiempo sin verte.
If it were night time,
what phrase
would we use to say good evening?
Buenas noches.
When would I use buenos
días? In the morning.
Which of these phrases
could I use to say hi to
someone in Spanish? All of
them. Oh, hey, Lucas is
back. Hey, Lucas.
¿Qué hay de nuevo?
What does that mean?
What's new?
Oh, wow. Well,
so our list just keeps growing and growing and
growing. And so when you're talking to somebody in
Spanish, you can use any of the following
phrases to greet them. Hola would
be hi. Tanto tiempo sin verte.
It's been a long time. Cómo estás
would be how are you. Cómo está
usted would be how are you in a more formal
way. Buenos días. Good
morning. Buenas tardes. Good afternoon.
And buenas noches
would be good night.
Qué onda would be what's up.
And now, qué hay de nuevo
would be what's new.
Man, but speaking of new, that's
a lot of information in a short time.
You're right. We should probably
go before they get overwhelmed
with all of these Spanish greetings.
Okay. Tanto tiempo
sin verte.
What are you doing?
Duh, I'm saying goodbye.
But that's a greeting!
Oh, well, I don't know how to say
any good ways to say goodbye.
Quick, what's a good way to say goodbye
in Spanish? Que te vaya bien.
Okay, well,
que te vaya bien. Que te vaya
bien. Oh, hey,
I noticed you still didn't say adiós.
Well, if
you liked this video or found me
irresistible, make sure to let

tell me who you would like to
start a conversation with
using one or more of the greetings
from this video. I personally
would love to say
hola to a plate of tacos.
