Wetting or hydrating and floating stucco second coats, plastering tips.
What is the second coat of stucco called? The brown coat.
We applied the brown coat, then when it had cured, we explained the what, why, and how to hard rubber float the second coat of stucco, which is called a brown coat.
This action makes the walls true, plumb, and level.
I intentionally left the walls ugly with my darby to prove a point.
howdy folks kirk and jay and dan here today i want to discuss something as far as brown coating goes
and hydration now today it's about one o'clock now in the afternoon we got here at 7 30 and i
started hydrating these walls what does that mean that means i take a garden hose with a nozzle on
it don't get one of those fancy nozzles get a plain boring nozzle like this and what you do
is you hydrate the wall now this this wall right here i've already browned it and i've already
hard rubber floated it i'm going to show you that right there but for sake of hydration this is what
you do now that we've this scratch coat has already set about uh three weeks actually because
they're waiting on windows and doors do we have to come in today and do this no but we got nothing
better to do so we thought let's go brown out what we can while they're waiting on doors and
windows hydration again i just floated this and we did this about two hours ago when you float
something hard rubber even hydrated hydrated i spent a half hour to an hour hydrating this wall
this morning at say eight seven thirty to eight o'clock now it's one o'clock so this has been on
for a while now the difference between hard rubber floating or say these are polyurethane floats
you can call a hard rubber float or polyurethane rubber float they're the same thing in the uk
they use wooden ones and i get asked this question too what's the difference between
uh a sponge float like this a sponge float you can bring textures out and they actually bring
the aggregate out on a lot of finishes say for example i'm just going to show you this
because i get asked this often the subject of this video is actually a hard rubber float
but if i were to take a sponge float and go over this wall here and what that does is it brings out
the aggregate there it is it brings out the sand and that is for a lot of finishes we do that but
we don't want to bring out the sand right here because we're doing a color coat maintenance free
integrated finish after this sets but that probably is not going to be for about three
months because they're waiting on windows and doors look at this crooked wall i chose this
time because i wanted to show you and i derbyed this dan and jay they they applied it and i took
a rod a derby and i i made the walls true and plum as i can get it now while it was still moist
it was easy if i wait for the walls to turn white which they're about to do i'll have to use three
times as much strength so right now i'm going to use skill i'm not going to use a lot of muscle
a little bit but not a lot of muscle here's what we're doing you see all these crooked lines and
all this now too this depends on the finish you're doing so you take a hard rubber or a
polyurethane float now what we do is before it gets too hard we just go in circles lines straight
lines and we chew out the wall that just means we get rid of all the lines we make the wall
what we call true and plum and what i'm doing too guys is i'm using the whole float i'm not using
the toe or the heel but i'm trying to use the whole float when we come to windows all windows
have a reveal usually that reveal is about a quarter inch so we'll take the float and make
that reveal sharp this is number one thing when with plasters make the window sharp make it a
quarter inch make it quarter inch here quarter inch here quarter inch here you don't want an
eighth of an inch here half inch here that just looks tacky guys so take your float and do that
now what happens if the wall is already really hard because i've been messing around today we're
doing a lot of stuff we're doing a lot of different walls here and i think i waited about
15 well about an hour too long so i'm gonna have to use a little bit of muscle in order to do this
but when one hand gets tired guys you switch to the other there is no such thing as a one-handed
plaster so i'll show you another tip also like say for example you're doing this and you don't want
to destroy a trowel guys if i do this with this what happens i pull the rivets out here and it
just destroys this this will be garbage it'll be useless uh the same as a trowel especially
these 20-inch trowels they're only riveted here here and here if i were to use a straight trowel
it wouldn't jack it up as much but anyway you could also do this too if the walls is turning
hard take it and eyeball it get some of that get some of the humps out like that you just you get
the humps out sideways and now you can float it back in if you see high spots that is how you do
it so i wanted to point that out because what we're trying to do on this particular job is
we are highlighting or showcasing almost everything that we've done here from the last to the corner
edge to the drip throughout a few videos but they're all going on the home page of the video
we started so i'm going to take the big ladder there and go all the way up there and continue
this and when i'm done this wall will be floated then i'm going to hydrate it again it's uh what
we do again we take the water hose and we wet it that's called hydrating it and generally you
hydrate a scratch coat two to three times how do you know if you're done hydrating the scratch coat
well the water no longer absorbs in it just falls down like a waterfall
anyhow when i get done with this we'll show you uh what it looks like okay guys here is the
completion of it the sun is off of it but that is where we hard rubber floated it we took our
trowel sideways and this wall is true and plumb what does that mean if you take a two by four
eight foot rod you put it against it you should you'll see some variations but it's true and
plumb meaning it's pretty straight and level every which way anyway guys my name is kirk jason
is on the camera dan's running around here somewhere we thank you guys for watching and
as usual we'll see you on the next one all right folks as always we want to say thank you for
watching if you like what we put out please like and subscribe and we'll keep making content for
and as usual we'll see you on the next one
