Well it appears that we have found the issue.
Well it looks like it's not. Now we're looking pretty good.
Sounding like a nice idle.
I think our idle is just a little low but...
And we're back. Today we're going to be looking at this
little 25 horse mercury this time and see what we got going on with this
thing. If we can't get it running, if we can't
make it viable, and if we can't save it. I do have a boat and a plan for this
thing to go on. So let's get it up to the shop and see
what's going on. Here we've got our engine up here on a
stand and now we're ready to look at this
thing and figure out what's going on with it.
And to me just looking at this thing I think I got a pretty good idea what's
probably going on with it. Most likely the engine runs
but judging that the lower unit has been taken off
and then is not all the way put back on. What's very common with these engines is
that they overheat and what's going on what's usually going on with this style
is that a water tube comes from down here goes up and it's a copper water
tube that then goes into this plate right here the
adapter plate of the engine and it's got a rubber bushing around that
copper tubing. Now a lot of salt gets up in there since this is
you know partially exposed it's not all the way exposed but just salt build up
from being a water tube and sucking raw salt water up there
the salt will build up around that rubber grommet it'll push it in
which then pushes the copper tubing in and then it loses water pressure and
just dumps the water out thus losing water volume to the
powerhead and they usually overheat at idle and
at speed and just in general have an overheat
problem so most likely the powerhead will need to come off
this adapter plate will need to be looked at and then once we look at the
adapter plate we'll have to put a new rubber grommet and possibly a
new copper tubing in there to fix the overheat problem. Shift shaft
is undone but really this thing's not that bad
it's pretty clean for a 2010. I don't see a whole lot of problems
everything seems to be plugged in um that's not done so somebody's
obviously been in there maybe took a relay or something i need to
definitely start by checking the trim because if i don't have trim on this
engine it's not going to work for what we want to use it for
so hopefully that trim unit works we'll probably need to clean the vst
check all the the rest of this stuff to make sure there's no blockages in any
of the water fuel take a look at the fuel injectors make
sure they aren't clogged up and then see if we can't get this
biscuit running actually i do want to check
this trim unit first so let me pop this cut pop this cover off all these wires
up into here and put some power to there and see if
the trim unit is working beautiful well it looks like our trim's
working so that's a good sign now let's hook this thing up to some
water actually we'll probably put the lower unit
back on or take the lower unit off and inspect it since it's already half off
and if that's all good we'll stick that back on put some water to it and see if
this thing will start knowing that one of our problems with
this engine is possibly this water tube i got the lower
unit off you can see here's our water tube what
we're going to do is we're going to take this hose
we're going to stick this onto the water tube like that
and then we'll turn a garden hose on to see if we got any leaks coming down
from the tube whether it's pitted and got a hole in it or if it's
messed up at the top way up there you can see it's corroded
pretty decently but not too bad so we'll put this on there
turn the water on and see if we got any leaks
well looks like it's not a water tube which is a good sign i mean look at that
that's that's a great stream right there coming
out the exhaust like it should well the good news is that it's not our
water tube so that means the power head doesn't have to come off so that's a
good thing we just need to check this lower unit
here make sure the impeller looks good and everything's good with that and
then we'll stick this back on the engine and we'll see if we can get it started
this looks really good so we're going to go ahead and put this back in
okay got our key switch hooked up got some fuel
battery cables and water so let's see what happens
nothing nothing at all okay so fuses someone took the fuse
ha some jerk took the fuse okay now let's see what happens
no fuel pressure feel the no fuel pressure
so got no fuel pressure looking like we got to pull the vst because our fuel
our high pressure fuel pump is not working so let's pull this vst off here
open it up and see if the pump's just locked up and what we got to do
there she is
oh no no no no no no well it appears that we have found
the issue the fuel pump is in like new condition
barely used but it ain't got no gas in it
knowing what our fuel looks like we need to make sure that we get the rest of
this fuel flowing nice and clean got good clean fuel up to
there now we need to blow the rest of this
out pull this off pull the fuel cooler off
we will need to pull this fuel rail off clean these
injectors and see how much a fuel pump's going to
cost us oh really wow well that's
unfortunate okay we've got our 30 amazon fuel pump
in here vst reinstalled checking everything we
didn't have fuel pressure on the rail so come over
here disconnected a bunch of stuff and we're checking
we do have fuel pressure coming out of the vst
but once it goes through here it goes through the fuel cooler
and there's nothing coming out the fuel cooler so either this is clogged
i did notice that this is bent like it got dropped
so i don't know if that's the problem or this is just clogged but we need to take
this out and figure out how to still cool the fuel and get this thing
running though we are running it looks like
we've got quite a few issues it's not getting enough
air i'll tell you that because you take this piece off right here
let more air into the manifold and it'll rev up nice and fine
but it won't stay idling unless you give it air
so if you take it off it's going to rev up
so idling fine right now probably a little low on the oh
so something's going on with either the throttle body
or our idle air controller which is right here so we'll pull
this thing out here and do a little bit of investigation on
here we've got our old iac and here's our new one
now let's go put this thing on see what happens we've got the iac back on we've
got our throttle body and everything back on
all this is put back together so now we're just going to
fill up our water and then once our water's full
we can start this engine and see if uh the iac was a problem
and if we got a good running engine all right now we're looking pretty good
sounding like a nice idle being it's a little low i may need to
i might need to change out those plugs and cool the fuel i think our idle is
just a little low but i think we're running pretty good
we still need to figure out something with this fuel cooler here
i got the fuel cooler disconnected just going through this
right here because this is smashed but other than that i do have a broken coil
here so a couple little things to fix
now nothing cleans up an old used beat up engine
more than a fresh paint job on the cowling
so what we're going to do i got the pan here and i got the cowling here
we're going to clean these up with some degreaser clean them all up
once they're all cleaned up i'll get these stickers off here sand these down
with some 220 and then we're going to spray paint them
i don't know if i'm going to do yamaha gray or if i'm going to do
white just yet i think the boat i mean there is a black piece in between here
and the cowling so i think i'm going to do white just because the gel coat on
the boat is white and everything else on the boat is white
so that would make it look a lot better but i'm not 100 sure yet so we'll find
okay we've got our cowlings all sanded down we're just going to wipe them down
with a rag here just a clean rag wipe these things down once we get them
all wiped down we will go ahead and use our tack cloth hit them with our
tack cloth wipe them all off we're going to put them on a board and
then we are going to spray paint these things i still am undecided about
white or yamaha gray but um i think it's about to be a surprise
we got our first coat on there looking a little sticky a little questionable in
some spots it's not looking too bad our that's just our base coat uh yeah
there are a bunch of nicks and scratches i don't care about those we're not in
the business of fixing those for this engine now i do like the way
this color is coming out though it's looking
pretty nice so hopefully on our next coat it's going to give it that real nice
gloss i'll lay it on a little bit thicker a
bit smoother and it'll fill over that black it's because we're covering the
black that makes it difficult to it does the color doesn't come out just
the way you want it just yet but our second coat should really change
that all right so check this out here we are
and we are with our second coat now it's starting to look pretty shiny
and pretty yamaha bluish gray boom that is looking pretty fresh i'm telling you
this is going to look really good i do think that we are going to need one
more coat you can still see some like transparency there in between the
lines i still think this paint's a little
messed up but yeah you can see how it's not laying just right like the
the passes aren't mixing together the way that they should
but other than that this is looking pretty good it is also very hard to
cover up black with a you know bluish gray color
or a white or any other color for that matter but it is what it is so we're
going to go one more pass on it and we'll see what our final
product looks like we got our third coat on the cowlings and they are looking
pretty slick i mean pretty good if you ask me i mean
for a can of spray paint come on that's looking
really good i'm debating on whether or not to put the clear coat on there just
because i have seen the clear coat mess stuff up
and that looks really good as is a little shine to it
actually these are really shiny i probably should have fixed those with
some bondo or something but yeah be all right we could put some
stickers or something on there for a can of spray paint these are
looking really good i mean look at that
look at that that is just awesome so all right now the next thing we
need to do we got to put the top on here
and then we need to put our gasket on the bottom as well as the gasket that
goes there stick that back on the engine that's
over there on the boat and then once we get the two gaskets on
there get the side chap back on the engine we do
need to clean the engine up a little bit because it is pretty dirty
then we'll be able to see what the finished product looks like
for an outboard that we probably have i don't know maybe 250 bucks in it
i mean 250 bucks i have a good running 25 horsepower and a working boat
not bad if you ask me all right now then we do
need to go ahead and put the gasket on this this here's our gasket
we need to flip the cowling over clean up the seam of it
with some acetone get that nice and clean maybe even scratch it up a little
bit i don't know how good this 3m uh is gonna stick but we're just gonna
go ahead and clean it stick it on there the way it is without
putting any adhesive on it and see how that holds up over time
so that's what we're gonna do we're gonna flip this over clean it up and
put it on now i have generally found that what you want to do
for something like this is to get the gasket started like that
then we will pull one little piece off of the
thing then we can put the gasket all the way around on
without this then we'll come back and we'll pull this
out and then you can just kind of pinch this thing
into position but that way it leaves it nice and clean all the way around so
that's just the way i do it um when you're doing something like this
that makes it nice and easy maybe you got a better way
this doesn't really work if you're trying to put some kind of sealant or
something or put it on after it's came off but
when you put it on new and you got that like that that's just the way i found to
do it that is a beautiful clean looking
cowling with a nice fresh gasket on it so why don't we go
ahead and take this thing outside put it on the
engine and see what the whole thing looks like all together
let's go look at that that doesn't look like a murkaha racing engine i don't
know what does whoo from trash to cash baby this thing
is clean yeah
