In 2005 I flew from England to America and met up with a guy I had been chatting to online because I wanted to have a go at freight train hopping (I don't recommend you do the same). We spent 10 days riding trains and sitting in bushes and covered a modest 700 miles. I took my video camera (as always) and edited a tight little video together when I got home. I called it "Hobo Living" just because it's a catchy little title. This wasn't an in-depth look at life on the rails, this was simply me having a mini adventure to see what it was like.
The original version of this video that I put on YouTube has about 77,000 views but a few years ago the audio was removed by Youtube. I have since then found a way to re-upload it which is why this was added in April 2011, almost 6 years after I was actually out there.

The Big Apple is very nice and everything, but the main reason I flew out to New York
State in June 2005 wasn't to see Manhattan.
We're probably going over here to Danbury.
I would of course need a guide for my freight expedition, so naturally I found a veteran
hobo on the internet.
It's a beautiful day.
This morning loads of trains have passed us, but it is Sunday and it is July the 4th tomorrow,
so who knows.
Yeah, we'll get out of here.
Basically, the train yard that we've just left, that five mile mammoth of a train yard,
is about two miles down the road.
We've just walked all the way along there, it's getting light.
One small problem, we've run out of water.
It took a long time, and we found an intermodal.
It's got an open floor, which is unfortunate.
No!
My next trick, I'm going to run in and out of these wheels when it starts moving.
Well, we're both moving.
One of us is on the train.
I don't know if we can keep up with this one, man.
This is the life, and I'm going to drink it to the end.
We're now putting on our dark clothes.
How far have we walked?
Maybe five miles.
We've done it fast.
If we get another of these trains later on, we'll be laughing.
We'll just find the best carriage, run alongside, bam, we're good to go.
I mean, we're not even going to have to go near the yard if that's the case.
Yeah, that's true.
Which would be really nice.
Yeah.
Dave is about to get changed into his dark clothes.
A metal dragon.
I had a wonderful dream last night, that I was clean.
And then I woke up and realised that it's not really the case.
We don't really know what's going on.
And there we go.
That's the end of it.
Who's swinging furthest next?
That was good.
Right, well, we're moving after three hours, so fantastic max, let's go.
I appreciate how big this place is.
Well, we've stopped in the middle of nowhere,
and we're surely going to be driving through the middle of nowhere,
surrounded by enemies.
I can't believe we've reached the yard that fast.
We're kicking ass.
Dave is getting ready for another day of adventure.
I absolutely feel like ----.
Campsite.
Rain.
These are from Little Creek Ferries.
This is the perfect ride.
Hopefully we'll get a slow-moving train.
This American tradition of hopping freight trains
doesn't really exist much anywhere else.
All I can say is, happy Independence Day.
Happy Independence Day.
I think there's a train over there that's that light.
There is a train there.
That might be our ticket out, maybe.
Yeah, this has lots of rideable ones in the back.
Even if we're going straight to Selkirk again, I don't care.
Selkirk.
We'll deal with Selkirk. We've dealt with Selkirk.
That track there is the one that leads out there to freedom.
This is the life.
Trainers are falling apart, and they absolutely stink.
Look at the state of my jeans.
You would not believe how filthy they are.
This is my awesome bed.
Plastic sheet in a sleeping bag.
This is Wyatt's bed.
Check out my hands.
This is how I'm living.
That's what happens when you live rough.
You grow some sort of monster beard.
History in the making.
And this is Buffalo, which we are now leaving.
Next time you see us, we'll be on a train heading east.
For absolute sure. I swear we will.
If it takes, however long it takes, we will not kill before then.
I just, I love this place.
And I swear, as far as I'm concerned, the entire nation of Maryland is one place.
