Twinmotion 2020 New Features Tips and Tricks
17 Video Views·Nov 2, 2022
What's happening ladies and gentlemen,
this is Minh from Architecture Inspirations.
Today I'm going to show you
the new features in Twinmotion 2020.
Let's get started.
1. Vegetation Scatter Tool
To use this new feature,
first go to Context,
then click here for the Vegetation Scatter Tool.
Now I can go to the library
and choose a model
then drag it in here to get started.
Next, I can select the object in the list
and use the Scatter Add tool
then click on the imported terrain
to start placing it.
You can see that the trees
has been scattered randomly
on top of the imported terrain.
If I click again,
it will keep adding more trees
and increase the density.
Now just repeat this process
to add other types of trees to the scene.
You can also use the Scatter Remove tool
to remove the selected trees at random.
If you want to remove a specific area,
then use the Eraser tool instead.
To delete all instances of a tree from the scene,
I can click on the three dots and delete.
You can delete multiple types of trees at once too.
A useful tip is that you can place
multiple instances of the same object
to increase the density.
2. High Quality Trees
If you've noticed,
these trees are part of the new
high resolution tree assets in Twinmotion 2020.
Each new tree asset has more polygons
than the previous assets in Twinmotion 2019.
And the texture resolution of the materials
has been improved as well.
If you look at the trees under the sun,
you will see that the leaf material is two-sided
so you can see the effect of the light
shining through the leaves.
The best thing about the new trees
is that they are procedural,
which takes me to the next new feature.
3. Vegetation Growth
Since the trees were procedurally made,
there's a new property for each tree called Age,
which allows you to adjust the age of the tree.
You can see that it's not simply increasing the size,
but it's also changing the shape of the tree
based on three different ages.
This makes the tree assets more dynamic.
This is very useful when you combine it
with the scatter tool,
just select each group and go to the settings
to change the age to a different amount.
As you can see,
you can easily make a realistic forest
with just one type of tree.
Pretty cool huh?
Besides changing the age in the settings of the tree,
when you create an image,
you can go to its weather settings
and use the growth slider
to adjust all the trees at once.
If you don't want a tree or a group of trees
to be affected by the growth slider,
then just turn it off here.
As you can see,
with this new feature,
we can show the clients how the vegetation
will affect the architectural design
as time passes by.
4. Grass Customization
Now I will use the scatter tool again
and add some grass to my model.
Similar to the trees,
the grass assets have been improved
and now you can change the look of the grass
by adjusting the options for the size,
tint color,
dryness,
which gives it a rough texture,
as well as the effect of the wind on the grass,
and stripes,
which is useful for creating grass on a soccer field.
5. High Quality Vegetation Assets
Twinmotion 2020 also added
many realistic Quixel Megascans assets
such as bushes,
ferns,
and other plants
as well as other miscellaneous items
such as dead branches,
wood piles,
ivy, etc.
Just add these to your model
to make the scene more interesting and realistic.
6. Improved Vegetation Painting
The Improved Vegetation Paint tool
now allows you to edit the density of the objects
after painting.
You can also remove the assets
but still keep the painted area.
This way,
you can easily replace the assets
without starting from scratch.
When using this feature,
you will see the grain triangles
on the areas that are painted
even if there are no assets in the viewport.
So now I can paint
before I add any assets to the list.
This is also useful to see painted areas of grass
which is optimized to show closer to the camera.
As you can see,
the grass aren't showing up far away.
But if we click on the grass area,
we can see the painted area
which is highlighted by the triangles.
This means that the grass is still there
even if you can't see it from far away.
But when you move closer,
it will become visible.
This is to help your computer run faster
but you can also adjust the distance
of the fading grass in the settings.
Note that this only affects the viewport
but when you render it,
all of the painted grass areas will be visible
even the ones that are really far away.
When working with multiple layers,
note that you can manage the vegetation layers
with the Asset Manager.
It's also a good idea to rename the layers appropriately.
7. New Physical Sky
Twinmotion 2020 has a new
physically based atmospheric sun and sky model.
This will allow you to create more realistic
and accurate exterior renders.
Just compare the sunset in Twinmotion 2020
versus Twinmotion 2019
and you will see a huge difference.
8. Improved Global Illumination
Here I have a model in the previous version of Twinmotion
and here's the same model in Twinmotion 2020
with the same lighting setup.
But as you can see,
this looks a lot better
because of the new Screen Space Global Illumination method
for dynamic indirect lighting.
Here's a side by side comparison between the two versions.
As you can see,
by default,
this will make your interior scenes look a lot better.
9. New Area Light
The new Area Light has been added to the library.
This light is good for simulating light emission
from large areas,
such as ceiling panels or large windows.
The light is diffused by default
but you can also turn on the shadows if you need.
10. Volumetric Light
When using the Omni Light in the Spotlights,
you will see that there's a new Haze option.
When enabled,
this will simulate the effect of light rays
visible through particles floating in the air
such as fog, mist, dust, or smoke.
Pretty cool huh?
11. Improved Glow Material
The Glow Material in Twinmotion 2020 has been improved.
It now uses Screen Space Global Illumination
which allows you to use it as a light source.
This is ideal for lamps,
neon lights,
monitors,
or other glowing objects.
For a more realistic result,
you can copy the Color Map and paste it in the Glow Map.
12. Video as Material
Instead of using the Glow Material for the TV screen,
I can use the new Video Material in Twinmotion 2020.
Then I can add a little glow,
or I can change the video to a custom one as well.
13. Frosted Glass Material
Twinmotion 2020 also added a new frosted glass material
making it easy to simulate translucent glass
that scatters light,
such as privacy windows.
You can adjust the roughness of it here as well.
14. Grunge Material
In the Color Map of a material,
there's a new Grunge property
that you can use to add a grunge effect.
This is useful when creating a dirty wall
or weathered wood material.
15. More Realistic 3D People
The animated characters in the previous version of Twinmotion
have been replaced with new high quality 3D people.
They come in various clothing styles and different ethnicities
so you can use them for any project.
Just drag and drop a character to place it in the scene.
The new characters come with 5 variations of clothing
and lots of poses.
Some are super cool.
For each pose,
there are different animations that you can try.
Just use whichever works best for your scene.
In addition,
there are new 3D ready pose characters as well,
which are also high quality photo scans.
I also like to use the group of characters
which make it really fast to populate your model
in any environment.
You can always edit the group using the asset editor too.
16. Cinematic Depth of Field
The depth of field effect in Twinmotion has been improved.
Besides the distance settings,
you now have more controls for the aperture and the bokeh shape.
There's also an autofocus tool
that helps you automatically focus on a spot in the scene.
You can also change the field of view for a more dramatic effect.
Pretty cool huh?
17. The Note Tool
In the tools folder of the library,
you can now use the note object to add annotations to your scene.
This is useful for providing feedback during project review
or marking up information such as the brand names or materials.
These annotations can also be imported into Revit,
ArchiCAD, or many other BIM software.
18. Twinmotion Presenter
To use the new presenter,
go to the media mode and click on Presenter.
Now you can add images by dragging it here.
Videos also work too.
Once done, you can play a preview using these controls here.
Or you can preview it up here in fullscreen.
As you can see, the new Twinmotion Presenter
allows you to easily create a presentation
with multiple viewpoints and camera paths.
You can also export this as a package
that allows clients or colleagues
to view the project in a standalone viewer.
The cool thing is that you can set the camera movement
to be locked, guided, or free
which allows the user to explore the model
in the standalone viewer.
19. New Rhino Direct Link Plugin
If you use Rhino,
then use the new Direct Plugin for Rhino
which enables you to synchronize your Rhino
and Grasshopper data into Twinmotion
with just a single click.
20. X-Ray Material
And finally is the new X-Ray option
on the generic Twinmotion materials
which allows you to see objects
occluded by other things in the scene.
This mode can easily be toggled on and off.
This feature is useful for showing mechanical,
electrical, and plumbing data.
And those are the new features for Twinmotion 2020.
