Embroidered Flowers- Part 4 - Sunflower: Learn my Sunflower technique using satin stitch and French knots.
Okay, so up next is the sunflower. Um, the sunflower is definitely like I would say my
favorite flower to stitch. It's just very satisfying. Um, so we're going to start off
with all six strands of floss. Um, and we're using a size three needle. Um, and we're just
going to do satin stitch all the way around. So you can start wherever. And again, just like we
did with the daisy, we're doing chunky satin stitches that are about a centimeter long all
the way around. I suppose if you wanted to, you could replace the satin stitch with the lazy daisy
stitch. But honestly, I think it would a be more work. And I feel that when I'm looking at a
sunflower, satin stitch kind of captures what the petal shape is like more than a lazy daisy
stitch would. I find your best results will come if you do do like a layout drawing in a washable
marker before. It just sort of keeps you on the right track in terms of size of your petals.
Because in the past when I haven't used a drawing to start, I've kind of noticed that my
petals will be longer on one side than the other. It kind of just happens while you're stitching
without even realizing it. Okay, so once we're happy with our petals,
we're going to start focusing on the center. So what I like to do, um, the center is made
French knots. And I like to pick two browns, a lighter color and a darker color. I usually do
just two strands of floss. So I'm going to switch back to my size nine. And I usually do an outer
ring of French knots in the darker color. And then I fill the center in with the lighter color brown.
So I'm going to just go around the middle. And for this, I want them to be really small. So
I'm just going to wrap once. And I'm not too concerned with it being an absolutely perfect
circle. Last one. And you can start wherever. And again, just one wrap. I typically try to go in
another circular motion, just to make it look nice and patterny. If you do get a gap like that
one there, you can jump back at the end and fill it in. And I just need a couple in the middle here.
And I'm going to go back and fill in that little gap from before.
And maybe one more down here. And there you go. There's your nice little sunflower.
