Are you the type of person that is a little bit concerned about damage? Right. I think a lot of
us are, but today I'm going to share with you how to create the shape, how to create volume,
how to create the smoothness and minimize the damage. Yes. While still using heat,
all of the good stuff. So why don't we head out and I'll show you exactly what I'm talking about.
Okay. So first of all, right. So first of all, I want to introduce you if you haven't already met,
this is Danielle. Danielle is one of my stylists at the salon, and she's the first of three models
that I'm going to be working through today. So all of the models today are going to have
compromised hair. That means it's damaged already. And we have to be aware of how much damage we
inflict on it in the future. Also, I'm going to show you three separate styles. So we're going to
do a nice wavy look. We're also going to show you how to create a nice smooth look with lots
of volume on medium length hair, as well as a shorter style where we're going to create a ton
of volume with a lot of shine. And we're going to do this all with an iron, even though we are
trying to minimize damage. If we want to create a nice long lasting shape, that's smooth and shiny
and gives us all the bend and all the stuff that we want. We need to have some heat there. The key
is just using the correct tools in the right way to minimize the damage from that heat. I'm super
excited to say that today's video is in partnership with Dyson. If you've been following me for any
time, you know that I've been using Dyson tools in my salon professionally for a long time. And
the reason is because I'm concerned about damaging my client's hair and I need tools that create the
best result with the least amount of damage. That's where this comes in. This, if you're
unfamiliar with it, is the Corral iron. This thing is amazing. We're going to use this today and I'm
going to show you the different techniques to create all these looks, but also why this is
much less damaging than other irons. Okay. So first things first, people always ask me,
how hot do you set your temperatures? Before I use the Corral, I always have my iron set to 400
degrees. It's kind of a magic temperature in terms of efficiency. With that said, this I use at 365.
So the Corral has actually three separate temperature settings, 330, 365, and 410. I use it
at 365 and I'm getting better results than I did when I was using 400 degrees. Daniel, I'm going
to have you take a section. So take this. Okay. And you're going to take that section and now we're
going to add some wave to it. So I'm going to give you this. Now, if you watch her, she's going to
put the iron in her hair about an inch away from the scalp. She's going to twist it back away from
her face. And then she's going to pull it out slowly so that she gets a nice even wave and
curls slowly all the way through the ends and then out. Okay. Now you can see the amount of wave that
she's getting in this. Here's the thing you want to know. The faster you move that iron, the less
wave you're going to get. The slower you move it, the more wave you're going to get. The bigger section
you take, the less wave you're going to get. And the smaller section you take, the more wave you're
going to get. I'm going to twist this. This is a little bit larger section. I'm going to twist her
over here so you can get a better look at this. Okay. So we're going to put this in the iron.
And now when we're going through this, I want you to watch what happens or kind of what
doesn't happen. So we put this in her hair. Okay. And we twist it back. You can see where that hair
is. Now when I pull it back, I want you to notice something. Notice that as I'm pulling this hair
through that iron, notice that it's not flailing out to the sides of the iron. It's staying inside
of those plates. And the reason it's doing that is because this iron has flexible plates. Those
flexible plates are actually holding that hair inside of the iron, kind of like a little cocoon.
That's a really big deal. So the more evenly heated that hair strand is, the more efficient
that's going to be. And therefore you're going to have to take less passes through that section,
which means less time under heat, which means less damage. So I'll have you take this section,
put it back in. Now turning it back away from the face. Now this is doing something else that you're
not seeing. And this is really incredible. So while it's got your hair cooped up into this
little cocoon in between these plates with these flexible plates, it's also monitoring the heat,
the temperature of that plate a hundred times every second. So we're going to go ahead and
finish this and then we'll come back and I'll show you what the rest of it looks like.
Okay, we're back. And now we've got our hair completely waved and it looks awesome. So just
to recap what we did, you grab larger sections. The larger section you take, the less wave you're
going to get. Smaller, the more wave. The faster you move the iron, the less wave you're going to
get. The slower you move the iron, the more wave you're going to get. Take large sections, put it
in the hair about a half an inch away from the scalp, twist it back, and then pull it away from
your face. And as you pull that out, it's going to give you the wave that you're looking for.
And that's where we ended up today. Easy enough. So now on to my next model. Okay. So this is my
lovely wife, Deanna. You guys may have met her before. She also has compromised hair,
whether she likes to believe it or not. She likes to go very blonde. And when I say blonde,
I mean white blonde on pieces. And that at the end of the day is just very damaging. And it's
a lot of stress on her. She wants volume. Okay. And smooth ends, a nice bend. So that's what we're
going to create with her hair. But before we start with any sort of iron, we need to start creating
a little bit of foundation. So that is what we're going to do first. We've got her hair wet. So this
would be like you getting out of the shower, you top out your hair, and we're going to put a little
bit of a foundational product in it. This is going to create a little bit of that foundation for
volume. So you can use a gel or a mousse, any sort of product that's going to give you a little bit
of lift. So I'm going to have you put your hands out. We're going to put a little bit of this in
here, and then she's going to work this through the crown of her hair, the crown of the top of
her head. So she'll work it through. And this is going to basically, this is just going to give us
lift and volume at the crown and in the roots. We're going to use a little bit of a product to
give it a little bit of smoothness at just the ends. So this is going to help basically protect
from any sort of heat that we do add. But more importantly, this is going to help give it a
little bit of shine and a little bit of smoothness. Once you're done with that, now we're going to
blow dry your hair. So I'm going to use this dryer here. Guys, I also use the Dyson blow dryer because
it's incredible. So I'm going to have you lift your, put your head all the way forward. You would
just take your hair, bring it forward, you would comb through it, and then you're just going to
get it dry. Okay. So all we're doing is getting this up, those roots up off the scalp. And then
once it's dry, we'll come back and I'll show you how to actually apply the flat iron to it.
Okay. So we've got our hair totally dry. We use the blow dryer, tilt it upside down,
just dried it. And that's it. This is what we're left with. Now we're ready to take the iron to it.
Uh, by the way, have you guys noticed anything about this particular iron? Uh, it's cordless,
which of course means you can take it anywhere. Have you watched any of my videos? You know,
that means that you can do it at home. You can do your hair at the salon or,
or you could do it here. I mean, come on. If you follow me at all, you know, you're going to find
yourself somewhere like here, right? But in all honesty, that's one of the things I actually love
about this iron. The fact that it's cordless is a huge deal. Yes, you're probably not going to end
up out here in the middle of nowhere, but you could be using it to do your hair while you're
chasing the kids around the house while they're trying to get ready for school. Which I'm probably
not going to right now, but that's beside the point. Or you could be using it even, let's say
you're camping or let's say you're a stylist and you do session work and you are out in the middle
of nowhere doing a photo shoot. I don't have to plug this into anything. I can just use it like
this and it lasts for about 30 minutes. So what we're going to do is we're going to have Deanna
now start flat ironing her hair. I'm going to have you go ahead and do this. If you want to go ahead
and grab a section like this, and we're going to have you just flat iron it like you normally would
flat iron it so we can see what you would do. And then I'll walk everybody through the process.
First of all, she's grabbing a larger section. She's starting about a few inches or about an
inch away from the scalp. You don't have to be right on the scalp, but I will show you a trick
here in a second about doing it next to the scalp. She's going at about an even pace,
not super fast, not super slow. Now she got a little too much bend just at the very end.
If you want to put that back in your hair one more time, I'm going to show you what happened there.
If you look at it when she's going through, do the same thing. She's pushing it down and then
she starts to give it a little twist like this with her wrist at the very end. That's what
creates this little bit of bend here. Now take this section and you're going to run that through
and now you're going to use just your arms so that you're creating kind of a C shape
and that's going to create, see how it creates a nice overall bend. She doesn't get that little
kick at the very bottom. Real quick tips to kind of create a little bit of volume in the crown as
well. Take about an inch section at your part and you're going to pull that aside, move it out of
the way. Then right below that, you're going to take a couple of sections right here. We'll start
with this one and all I want you to do, I'm going to have you do this, but I'm going to steal this
from you. All I want you to do is put this in at the very scalp and you're just going to twist a
bit real quickly. You're just going to put it into the scalp, twist it and pull it out. You're
just trying to give it a little bit of bump right here at the scalp. Then when you put this other
hair over it, it's going to help create a little bit of foundation for a little bit of extra volume
in the crown. One other thing that I want to show you real quickly about this iron, I noticed that
when I put this in the hair, I would go through a section and it was actually kind of grabbing
the hair. It sounded like it was snagging the hair. I noticed that and it kind of threw me
off at first. I didn't quite know, but when I spoke to the folks at Dyson, they actually
mentioned that if you take a larger section, follow me, a larger section of hair, you won't
have that problem. I was like, I don't know about that. I tried it. It works, which is crazy to me
because that means that you're going to get through the hair faster and not have it snag. Win-win?
Yeah. Now I'm back with my next model. This is Sharon. Sharon's actually my mom. Now we've got
color treated hair, thin and fine. All of those things add up to create something where you really
need to be careful about the amount of damage that you're inflicting on the hair. Flat irons have
legitimately been one of the most efficient and effective ways I've ever seen to create long
lasting volume. First things first is we want to make sure that we grab a section of hair,
but we want to make sure that we get the bend in it. So we're going to put that iron in and we're
to actually bend it this time out and that's what's going to create us this bend. That amount
of bend is what's going to create volume. So it's not like before where we were using our body
mechanics to create that bend. We're actually going to use a little bit of the wrist in this
term, twist a little bit. That's what's going to create the bend. Grab another section. So we're
able to use less heat in this scenario. And if you notice, she'll go over this one time. She'll put
this in and she'll be moving this. Perfect. She moves it through. She goes relatively quickly.
It's one time and it's going to stay. We let that cool down. It was fast, efficient, gives a shine.
It's going to hold for the day and that's at a lower heat temperature than I would typically
use to get the same result. If you've got the right amount of heat and it's distributed evenly
across the plates, it's going to go pretty quick and it's really going to lock that bend in,
which is going to give you long lasting volume with much less damage. So we'll finish this up
real quick and then we'll come back and show you what we end up with. Okay, now we're back. We've
got her hair completely styled and there's tons of volume. There's tons of volume and it's going
to last. I really appreciate Dyson partnering up with me on this particular video because I love
their products and I tell everybody about them anyway. There's a reason that I stand behind them
and that's because when you look at an iron like this with the amount of research and development
that went into this, yes, it's an expensive iron, but you're also very much getting what you're
paying for. You're not just spending a bunch of money on a brand name. You're spending money on
technology that is really important in situations like this. Being able to have flexible plates,
being able to have multiple temperature controls, being able to have something that is actually
monitoring the heat of the plate a hundred times a second to ensure that it is the exact same
temperature. All of those things add up to creating a tool that is going to give you the results that
you want, but not give you any excess damage. And if you want to learn a little bit more,
