Okay, if you clicked on this video, then one of two things is going on.
You have curly hair and you have either used one of these before,
and you recognize exactly why it's so important for drying your hair,
or you have no idea what this thing is.
Either way, I'm going to tell you today exactly the right way to use this,
but I'm going to need a little bit of help.
So, Bae, Yana, you want to help me out on the video?
Yes.
Okay, so we are going to use this on your hair.
You know what it is?
Yeah, that's a diffuser, right?
Yes, it is.
Like, you know I have straight hair.
Which is exactly why this is going to be such a good little tutorial, I think.
So, what we're going to do is we're going to diffuse your hair with it,
and I'm going to show you exactly how to use this the correct way,
but I'm going to show you how to use it whether you've got curly hair,
that you want to enhance more curl, even relax some of the curl,
or just dry it in the natural curl that it has.
And let's get back to the enhanced curl.
We're going to try to enhance your straight hair with curl using this.
See if I can get some weight in it, even though your hair is straight.
I think it's going to work well.
So, that's the challenge.
Either way, regardless of the hair texture you have,
you're going to learn the simple step-by-steps.
It will absolutely pertain to you, I absolutely promise.
But for you right now, then what I need is for you to go get your hair wet.
Again, she loves doing this so much.
Go get your hair wet, come back, and we're going to do the step-by-step.
Oh, and by the way, today's video is sponsored by the great people over at Skillshare.
Yes, this was just sitting right here for you,
but we'll talk more about that in just a second.
So, right now, let's explain what this is.
And really, more importantly,
is there a difference between the diffusers that you may or may not pick?
So, first of all, if you've ever bought a blow dryer,
the chances are you have gotten one of these with that blow dryer.
This is simply here to...
This is simply here to diffuse the airflow that's coming from your blow dryer.
And the reason that's important and super vital if you're trying to dry your hair curly
is because the more manipulation that you apply to your hair during the drying process,
the more potential frizz you're going to add.
So, this, by diffusing that stream of air,
is simply diffusing that manipulation to your cuticle
and ultimately, potentially, if you use it correctly,
creating less frizz while drying your hair.
Now, are there differences between these?
Absolutely.
Now, there are some that are a little bit deeper
and there are some that are much more shallow in that cone.
I find that I prefer,
especially if you're in a situation like we're about to be in,
where you're trying to enhance curl,
I prefer a little bit of depth and width to the cone.
So, to me, this is kind of a fail-safe for no matter what you're trying to achieve.
It's just kind of a better option.
So, with that said, like I said before, there is a step-by-step process.
All right, let's get to that.
Is it damp?
Yep, it's all wet.
So, step one is simply getting it damp.
So, first things first, if her hair is too dry,
anywhere, this goes for anyone,
if your hair is too dry,
the product that you use is going to distribute differently through the dry hair
versus the way it will distribute through the wet hair.
Many times, if it's too damp or too wet,
what will happen is it will actually just dilute the product
and you won't get quite the reaction.
So, it's important that it's evenly moisture.
If your hair is dry already,
if you've been getting ready or doing whatever
and your hair's got basically a little bit air-dried,
then go back in and spray those areas that are dry.
Spray them down.
Step two is using the product.
Now, like I said, this is going to pertain to you
whether you've got curly hair that you're trying to enhance curl
or whether you're trying to minimize curl.
It's all the same.
We still need to use a foundational product
so that you can minimize the amount of texture that happens when you're drying.
While you're drying your hair, when you're talking about curl,
I keep on pointing at you like you have curl
and this is clearly not curly,
but while you have curl,
the one thing when you're drying your hair
that's combating any of that frizz is some sort of product.
You're not using a flat iron or any sort of hot tools
to help minimize that texture.
You're relying 100% on either your natural texture
or the product that you're using.
Then, distribution of that product is also vital.
You want it on every hair from roots to end.
Many times, people will use too little of a product.
They'll scrunch in it at the bottom,
start working it through the roots,
and by the time they get up to the roots,
they really don't have that much in there
so they've got a bunch of product in one area
and not a lot in the other
and that will end up with frizzy areas
versus areas that are actually controlled
as well as different amounts of curl potentially,
especially in a situation like you're going to see today.
First things first, we're going to put some product in.
I'm going to have you do it since this is your...
And we've got a very needy dog here, clearly.
Oh my gosh, Kev.
So I'm going to start you with that much.
You're going to work that through your hands.
Move closer here real quick.
Come close to the camera.
Come right here and tilt just like this.
If you can see this, see how this is a little bit drier?
You can barely see that,
I can tell that there's not quite as much moisture in this.
I'm going to dampen this down a little bit
because it's that important that this gets wet.
Okay, so now you can see that she's got a bit of wave in her hair.
It's getting in the right direction
but we need to start drying it now
and actually using this diffuser.
So let's move on to the next step.
Okay, so now is where we actually utilize this diffuser.
First things first, if you've never used one of these before,
they're usually attached to the end of your dryer.
Most of them will just clip on.
This is actually one of the things I love
about the Dyson dryer specific.
No, not sponsored by Dyson
but nonetheless, I love this dryer
because it's magnetized.
First thing you're going to do
is you're going to tilt your head off to the side,
either side or back or all the way forward.
Your goal is, I'm going to have you tilt all the way to the side like this.
Yeah, there you go.
Your goal is to get this hair, the roots up off of the scalp.
So if you are drying your hair,
you've got the appropriate amount of wave in it or curl in it.
You love what you're seeing right here
and all you want to do at this point
is just get this specific look dry.
Then what you're going to do
is you're going to turn your heat on back here.
Okay, I'm going to turn this off so you can hear me
and you're going to hold the dryer out away from your head.
What you're not going to do is come in
or do this with the dryer.
So you're just going to hold it back here
and you're just going to allow it to dry the hair.
Now, if you're in a situation where you want less curl
than you already have,
you're going to need to pull that curl out
before you take the diffuser to it.
So it means you're going to put the product in,
you're going to do whatever you typically would do
your process to actually pull that curl out
and then you would take the diffuser
and you would dry your hair the exact same way I just showed you.
On the other hand, if you want to encourage curl
like we want to today,
you're going to do that same thing, tilt your head off
and you're actually going to put that hair in the diffuser
and pick it up a little bit.
Now, you want to be a little bit careful
about moving this around a lot
and the only reason I'm touching this like this
is because I can't feel her hair or her scalp.
So I don't know how hot it is.
I'm trying not to burn her.
But at home, you're going to be able to tell
if it gets too hot in here
and you're going to be able to move it away.
So in that case, this hand, put it in your pocket,
do something with it.
I don't care what you do,
but don't get it working through your hair.
She might tilt you over even more and do it like this
so she gets it up in that top area.
Do you see how this side now has a bit more wave
than this side does?
Because we started to enhance that.
We're just going to do that same process.
If your hair is already curly
or you're trying to minimize the amount of curl,
then the first place you want to start drying
is actually at your roots, not at your ends.
But in a situation like this
where we're trying to actually enhance curl,
I need to take full advantage of these ends
and start getting some moisture or some curl in those
right out of the gate
and then come back to finish up the roots.
I just need to make sure that those roots are dry.
So what I'm going to have you do,
because you're so excited to do this,
is go into the bathroom
and do what I just showed you to do.
All right.
With your hair.
I think I can do that.
Think you can do it?
I think so.
Okay, so she's going to go out
and then while she's actually gone,
while you're doing that,
I'm going to tell you about Skillshare.
Did you see I just rolled that in there?
Because it's all about edu...
Segway.
It's just a perfect...
That is terrible.
I'm sorry.
But anyway, let's talk.
Okay, so if you've watched any of my videos
or you've been around this channel
for more than a couple days,
you know that I'm all about teaching you new skills,
which made so much sense
when Skillshare reached out
and wanted to sponsor some of my videos.
I was super excited
because they're all about helping you learn new skills
and I love that.
So if you're unaware of what Skillshare is,
you got to get over here and join us.
Check this out.
Skillshare is an online learning community
with thousands of inspiring classes for creators.
It's like the best place to explore new skills,
deepen existing passions,
or just flat out get lost in creativity altogether.
Now, one of my favorite things about it
is the fact that it's actually curated for learning.
That means that there's zero ads.
So you can stay 100% focused
and follow wherever your creativity is taking you.
And they're always launching new premium classes.
Like right now, I'm going through Ryan Booth's class,
DIY Cinematography,
make your video look like a movie.
Because if you watch my videos,
you know I try my hardest
to not just sit in front of a ring light and do a video.
I want to add that cinematic flair
to separate myself from all the other beauty videos.
I've already learned a ton about lighting
and how to use natural light from this class
and I cannot wait to go through the rest of it.
But the awesome thing is
there's tons of other classes I really want to take
that have nothing to do with videography.
For instance, this one right here,
Style Your Space, Creative Tips and Techniques
for Interior Design by Emily Henderson.
Or another one I'm excited for is
Discovering Success, Seven Exercises
to Uncover Your Purpose, Passion and Path by Emma Gannon.
And there's actually a couple other...
Actually, hold on, hold on one sec.
I want to show my wife this one actually
because I think she would love this.
Hold on.
Okay, if I told you confidence for creatives,
five exercises to grow your confidence and self-care.
Or you have this one too.
There's another option.
Everyday Minimalism, Find Calm and Creativity in Living Simply.
I love it.
It sparks joy.
If it doesn't spark joy, you get rid of it.
Yeah, so that's another reason.
There's just way, way, way, way too many options in here.
So I think that might be the next one.
I don't know.
Too many to choose from.
But nonetheless, that is what Skillshare is.
So if you want to learn more,
heads up in the description of this video.
First thousand of my subscribers to click on that link
are going to get a free trial premium membership.
Yeah, that's amazing.
So click on that.
Check that out.
And now let's go back and check out some of that ridiculous curl
that Deanna is getting in her hair.
Okay.
And oh boy.
Guys, look at this curl.
Look at this curl.
Look at that.
That's a lot.
Holy, stand right there.
That is a substantial amount of curl.
Look at that.
Did you think you're going to get that much curl?
Honestly, I didn't think that I was going to get any curl.
I was thinking this is going to go so wrong.
And so when I like flip back up, I was like, holy crap.
Now the next step is when you get done diffusing your hair,
it's going to feel hot.
And many times heat can be mistaken for dry.
And that isn't always true.
So what I say is allow your hair to cool down.
Once it gets cool, then you can feel it and determine,
okay, is it actually damp?
Now what you want to do is go through
and actually break your hair up.
Now let's back up.
If you look at your hair now and you're like, that's money.
I'm good to go.
Then the next steps aren't necessarily important for you.
But more often than not, if you're using a product
that is going to control texture,
many times it's going to have a bit of a wet look
when it gets dry, if you've used enough of it.
And you may not want that.
So what you might want is a little bit more
of a softer overall appeal,
or maybe you just want to break up
some of the curl a little bit.
And the way you're going to do that is by actually scrunching up
or breaking up your curl once it's dry.
There is a specific way to do that
so you don't just encourage frizz.
The simple way you do it is you bring your hair off to one side
and you're going to keep in mind the keys are
you're not going to comb through your hair.
So even if you go into the scalp, which I would say to do,
at some point, you go into the scalp,
you kind of shape your fingers like a claw,
go into the scalp, shake back and forth,
and you come straight back out.
You're not going like this and then going through the ends.
That's a quick way to start breaking up that curl
and start actually encouraging frizz.
If that's the look you're going for
and you want that kind of big, broken up,
kind of frizzy curl, then go ahead and do that.
But if you're trying to minimize that amount of frizz,
then you want to keep your hands out of it.
Then you can come from the bottom
and you're basically just going to scrunch it up again,
similar to what you did when it was wet,
and you're just going to go through
and just kind of break up that curl.
And what you'll find is you'll maintain the curl,
but it'll break up the product
so that you get a little bit drier.
Go ahead and look up again.
A little bit drier, more open, voluminous.
Volume, voluminous?
Voluminous.
So I go in, I break it up, I come back out.
This looks aggressive.
It is pretty aggressive.
I've got a lot of product in here.
I'm going to actually say Deanna has a lot of product in here,
so you can kind of get through it.
Now, if you can kind of see the difference
between this side and this side.
Obviously, she's got her hair parted on this side,
so there's more hair over here.
It's clearly going to have more volume,
but you can look more at the definition
or the dryness of the overall curl pattern
versus this side,
which has a little bit more of that damp look
because you haven't broken it up yet.
I feel like that's a win in terms of creating curl
in straight here, right?
And I thought this was actually going to be
one of your YouTube fail videos.
Yeah, so there's that.
Thanks for having faith in me, babe.
