Happy New Year!
First hike of the year, 2017, well, snowshoe.
I'm Evan, that's Danny, we're adventure happy, and it's cold out here.
It's first weekend in January, 2017, and we're going to go for a little snowshoe.
It's about 22 below zero in Celsius, according to the dash on the car there, but it is a
beautiful day, and we wanted to come out, get some fresh air, and introduce you to the
newest member of the adventure family, the adventure happy family, it's Cosley the adventure
dog.
Cosley!
Hey buddy!
He's a little distracted, because there's many good smells out here.
And he loves the smell.
He sure does.
Definitely lots of it here, so that's nice, yeah, so we figured we'd just come out, we're
going to explore this area a little bit, or I should just say we're in William A. Switzer
Provincial Park, just north of Hinton, Alberta, and yeah, we just wanted to come out, explore
a little bit, we've never been here before, hopefully get some decent views from up at
this lookout here, which is just a kilometer up the trail, and yeah, we're just going to
do that for a bit, and probably just talk a little bit about what's to come with our
channel in the upcoming year, clearly the only people who've been out here since the
last time it snowed, it should be a great day.
This comes through, it's kind of cool, there's these marks in the snow, a little pit here,
and I think what happened is a bird, some sort of raptor swooped down and snagged something
out of the ground here, it's pretty cool, yeah, very, I smell something going on.
Only have about 100 meters to go to get up to the lookout, got a good feeling, the way
the sunlight's streaming in through the trees looks pretty awesome already, it'll be really
nice too when we get up there.
Come on Cos, let's go buddy, this view, I love the look of that, a little hanging fog
down over the water there, happy new year!
Happy new year to you!
Cosley likes the view too.
Cosley!
Cosley, come on buddy, a little deep over there, he's going to be tired, seems like
hard work running through that snow bud.
Cosley, come on, let's go!
Letting him off the leash a little bit here, Cosley, sit, sit, he's only six and a half
months old, working on training him off a bit, still gets really distracted obviously
when he's out in new places with new sights, but he's doing really well, all things considered.
Cosley, yeah, stay over here buddy, good boy.
So yeah, expect to see a lot of the Cosdog on our adventures this year, basically what's
going on is the Canada Park Service has given away free access to all the national parks
all year this year to celebrate Canada's birthday, was it 150 years this year?
150th year.
150th year of Canada as a country this year.
We're long time park pass holders, we love the national parks, but it's going to be so
busy because of all the extra free access for everybody that we're planning on staying
away from the parks as much as possible, exploring Alberta's provincial parks and public land
use areas.
Cosley!
Hey, come here bud, come on!
He's like, do I really need to go back, if I wait here he'll probably come to me, hmm.
So that's why we decided to come out here today, to start the year off with William
A. Switzer Provincial Park, a area we've never been before, it's about three and a half hours
drive from Edmonton, and we came out because we're the only people out here and it's actually
a perfect day for this, so we're just going to keep wandering around exploring a little
bit and see what we come across to get a nice valley.
There's a trail dropping in down below me here, leads to a campsite which is a few kilometres
up.
Wow, it's so quiet out here when we stop moving.
Perfect day for snowshoeing, even if it was a little chilly when we started to move.
How are your toes doing?
No?
Can't feel them in a good way, can't feel them in a bad way.
Might have warmed right back up, they were pretty chilly when we started out, but nope,
so cold.
Look for a review on Denny's winter boots coming soon maybe, honest opinion on what
she thinks of those, yeah, yeah, could be a little bit of you, could be just a little
bit of too tight.
They seem to do okay in snowshoeing at Christmas, it was, I don't know, my last year, I think
it was 12 or something, and my feet did get wet.
Yeah, yeah, new sock system or something that gives you a little bit of, a little bit of
protection.
The snowshoes and winter boots and stuff we got last year, we didn't use them much, this
year we're trying to use them a little bit more.
We also like to ski in the winter, but skiing is expensive and snowshoeing is free, so we've
gone out a couple of times already this winter, this is the first time we've really had the
time to film though, so, what a perfect day for it, it is.
It was a bit of a long drive to get out here, took us like three and a half hours, and we're
heading back after we're done here.
It's a lot of driving, but worth it, definitely feel recharged a little bit.
Smells something good over there.
So that's Cosley, he is a German Shepherd, Border Collie mix, we think, he's a, yeah,
he's a mutt, we rescued him from Second Chance Animal Rescue Society here in Edmonton.
They were amazing, they worked really hard to find us a dog that sort of fit with what
we wanted, he's got a great temperament, he's very mellow, very smart, sometimes too smart
for his own good.
Yeah, he can be a little stubborn, but he is just a puppy, so the training has overall
been going pretty well.
And in the grand scheme of things, he's really motivated.
He is, yeah, for sure.
And he loves it out here, he's a good pup.
Very happy to have him along, and yeah, you'll be seeing a lot of him over the, over the
summer.
He's going to get lots of experience.
The national parks are expected to be very, very busy this year, so we're going to try
to avoid them as much as possible because a lot of the time it's, it's the, the solitude
and the peacefulness that we're really searching for when we come out here.
We'll see, we're in the, we're in Jasper next weekend, so we'll see how busy it is in the
winter, and then we'll see how much that will increase over the summer.
Yeah, for sure.
Yeah, we are going down to Jasper.
Not everybody likes this place.
We are going down to Jasper next weekend, probably do another snowshoe, and a day of
skiing at Marmot Basin.
Yeah, should be a great year coming up.
I'm finally almost caught up on our 2015 trip videos, I'm about halfway done editing the
last one I think that I'm going to post from that year.
Really looking forward to getting into the full length videos for the 2016 year.
We've got five or so of those I believe that I need to edit as well.
Good ones in there.
Yeah, there are, for sure.
Some pretty cool stuff, so those should be coming.
I'd like to get them all done before May so that I can start fresh with the new videos
and hopefully get them up in a slightly more timely fashion this year going forward.
But I'm also going to spend some time in the winter season here, just doing short gear
related videos mostly.
Looking at some of our systems, what we use, what we keep in our packs, that sort of stuff.
So there'll probably be a full, like, pack, what's in my pack type teardown video coming
in the next few weeks.
And then after that, we'll be looking at probably doing some more specific reviews and closer
looks at certain things.
Should be lots of content coming as the year gets started here, and then hopefully a lot
of full length videos again, starting in the spring.
Well, I think we're going to have a little snack, take a look at the map and see what
makes the most sense as far as exploring a little bit more and then heading back down
to the car.
It wasn't much of a hike really, I mean we were only gone for an hour and a half or something
like that.
Mostly we just wanted to get out, stretch our legs a little bit, and let you guys know
sort of what's coming up with the channel in the new year.
Should be a good year.
Yeah, we're really excited about it.
Especially with the cause dog.
Yeah, lots of videos coming soon, so stay tuned.
