I will show you how whey can help you combat fungal diseases in your fruit trees orchard
The person who introduced me to the idea of whey is Roland Allard
He had a cheese shop After making his cheeses he wondered what to do with them
So he started spraying them on his trees
When I went to see it I saw that the growth and beauty of the foliage much more than that one was a rich rich green
And I realized I said but what are you doing
These trees are really in good shape yet they are growers susceptible to scab
That's where he told me about whey and how he uses it
Therefore one of its beauties is that it combats the effect of mildew the fungus but it also fertilizes
Therefore it is a foliar fertilizer while also providing protection for trees
Roland told me honestly we should drink the whey and throw away the cheese from a nutritional standpoint
The nutrients from the milk are found in the whey and the fat is coagulated and in the cheese
Therefore in terms of nutrition whey is the most nutritious
And cheese is a great way to make sure you have plenty of calories
What is whey
It is a liquid that remains after pressing the cheese
You could drink it it's not toxic it's even quite nutritious but you really want it to be cold
The dog really likes whey and the farm animals like it too
What are the other words for whey
Milk small milk
Then we apply it 100% on the foliage not on the bottle
We pass the sprayer and spray the trees
You could maybe try it diluted to 50%
We use it at 100% 50% should work FileNotFoundException: No such file or directory
It is a living liquid
That is the beauty of it There are bacteria
Because it's alive and sticky it's very effective compared to chemical versions which wash away after a rain
The whey is placed on the sheet
The sheet dries The bacteria remain
What is it used for
To combat apple scab
We have a bit of it here
Apple scab
There are some here
There are some there
And that is also a blemish on the pear
So here this is also scab but on a pear
So it's used to prevent that
I would tell you before thinking about using whey consider using resistant cultures
Because once it's resistant you don't even need to think about it
We use it because there are still some cultivators who are not disease-resistant
What is whey
You don't see the exudates on the leaf but the leaf releases sugars
And these sugars which are on the leaf and under the leaf are food for fungi for diseases that are fungi
Whey on the other hand has the big advantage of not killing the mushrooms unlike fungicides
They запрос are people who are proposed to kill the mushrooms
I don't want to kill mushrooms I want mushrooms everywhere in the orchard
But I just don't want them to settle on the leaves and especially on the fruits
Therefore the exudates that are released the beauty of whey is that after spraying the leaf is covered with a thin layer of liquid
And immediately the bacteria in the liquid start to eat the exudates on the leaf
If it's going to rain tomorrow and I spray today the bacteria in the whey eat all those exudates
Tomorrow when it rains and the mildew spores hatch these spores that float in the air during rain
They land on a wet leaf but because it is covered in bacteria that have eaten all the secretions
The spores fall into the desert germinate but have nothing to eat
Therefore it does not kill the fungi in the way that fungicides do but it outcompetes the same spores and fungi for available food
Therefore the spores germinate but do not grow to form scab lesions
Then this one has a spot of mildew right there and that means that branch wasn't covered properly You can see another spot there
So generally it works through overcompetition Once the leaf has been sprayed once it sticks it's alive and the effect lasts all season
It sticks well it's lively and the effect lasts all season
Then the first leaves that were made at the beginning of the season they have nothing they will have nothing even if I stop spraying and we have abundant dew
It's the new leaves that are at risk so watch your rain warnings and especially the phytosanitary warnings and they will tell you if there is a risk of infection
So you spray one or two days before rain and then the new leaves are covered and the older leaves that have already been sprayed are even more covered
So that's how it works whey through competitive exclusion rather than elimination to kill the fungi
I want the mushrooms I want to encourage them I want the mushrooms in the grass but I don't want them on the leaves or in the winter
One of the beauties of whey is the lack of risk
Yes I pour it on myself it's not that serious it's not toxic
Don't try this with fungicides
So when I spray I can be in short sleeves with a cap
Normally I wear a smock simply because after spraying I smell like cheese and if I have a lot on me I'll smell like cheese
But it's not toxic
It can be quite acidic because the whey and sugar turn into lactic acid
Therefore if I keep it for a few days or a week before spraying again I use dolomitic lime to neutralize the acidic effect
But other than that I use it 100%
So not toxic that's good
Whey is approved according to the specifications for organic production but even organic producers don't know much about it
He would gain a lot from being known
Try it if you don't know
Try it on a small scale and you'll see
How many times should whey be applied in a season
It depends on your region it depends on your rainfall pattern
But we in southern Quebec they recommend applying a fungicide between 6 and 30 times
And the whey I find it to be more effective
It is certainly as effective but it may be even more effective than fungicides
So 6 to 30 if you have rain occurring three times a week for eight weeks three times eight is 24
There would be a recommendation to apply a fungicide 24 times or you can use lacto
I think once a week during the first eight weeks of spring should be enough
If you do it well at that moment you will have a
good job done Check your phytosanitary warnings
They invested money and effort into providing weather forecasts and telling you or recommending how many times you should apply
Follow their advice you won't be wrong but you can also do it as little as once a week
Imagine with me for a moment what it would be like if we replaced fungicides with whey
What effect could it have for a region even a country
One would stop polluting groundwater with fungicides that would be good
They would use part of the huge amount of whey that is produced and not utilized which is often wasted
Stopping the spread of a toxic or dangerous product would better for the neighbors and the surrounding area
For those who cannot eat fruits because of residues imagine if they could now eat fruits that are produced without any danger
I heard about a case during our visits in France where someone ate fruits with whey and had a reaction because they weren't lactose tolerant
If you have a lactose intolerance but there is lactose in whey that's certain
However there is no actual danger in eating fruits that have been sprayed with whey
